I hate today’s fashion!!!!

Stupid black shapeless sportswear items, jogging bottoms, everything plain and dull and beige. Awful centre parting that make me look like Hey Arnold.

I’m desperate for the early 2000s fashion to make a proper comeback - little sequin boleros, floaty camis, skinny jeans, ballerina pumps, long hair with a side parting, everything in pretty colours with a bit of sparkle and nice jewellery.

Yes yes my next big birthday will be 40 and heading for that ‘everything now is shite’ phase but I mean it this time!!

I do think the current fashion is incredibly dull. When you go out it's just a sea of trainers, baggy jeans and white t-shirts. Beige, black, brown. It's all so so dull, and I find a lot of the shops just sell the same beige stuff with different labels.

Maybe one colour will be in fashion for the season but it's hard to find anything else not in that colour or boring beige

The good news is that you don't have to follow trends. Most people I think look stylish if they have "a style", it doesn't have to be the latest trend

Pieceofpurplesky · 15/12/2025 20:27

Don't be a fashion victim and wear what you feel good in.

Isayitasitis · 15/12/2025 20:27

Or how about you don't give an eff and jeff about what is in fashion and wear it anyway! Am sure you can find some online.

Have a Y2K themed 40th birthday and go all out 🥳🥳🤣🤣🤣

Because the self conscious youth in me still wants to be considered fashionable.

Sad, I know.

There’s nothing sad about taking an interest in style or fashion. Don’t let Mumsnet tell you otherwise! I don’t know why the ‘wear what you like’ brigade come on this topic TBH.

edited to say I didn’t realise this was AIBU! Oh dear! My apologies to WWYL-was!

Shedeboodinia · 15/12/2025 20:32

I am a similar age and I have been wearing all this past few years what you were decribing as early 2000s fashion. I am clearly outdated 😂
Wear what you like.

DarkEyedSailor · 15/12/2025 20:34

I agree. I just wear what I like the look of. I'm 44 and fat, I'm not wearing gym leggings and beige nonsense. I'd look like a croissant.

I still wear my animal prints and bright colours and whatever else I fancy.

Shedeboodinia · 15/12/2025 20:35

Well apparently they are back... www.whowhatwear.com/fashion/denim/how-to-wear-skinny-jeans

Sandunesandseashells · 15/12/2025 20:49

If you like T-shirts longer, buy mens. I do this for hoodies too.

brunettemic · 15/12/2025 20:50

You don’t like it but then say not wearing it isn’t an option. You can’t have it both ways.

TheKeatingFive · 15/12/2025 20:56

The short tops can do one. I've a big bust and a bit of a belly (it's not too bad, but it's far from my best feature). They look awful on me.

For the same reasons, I can't tuck a jumper either.

But the comeback of the ballet flat is appreciated, along with the fact that you are allowed to wear sambas with everything nowadays,

TheKeatingFive · 15/12/2025 20:57

I'm quite short, but I've started to buy the long version of tops/jumpers where available

NickyWiresSunnies · 15/12/2025 20:57

You don't look fashionable when you're just wearing something 'current' that you don't connect with. True fashion isn't the identikit - & utterly gross - second-skin beige 'sports' leggings or tedious tracksuits. Its finding combos you love & feel good in, with some up to date shapes/colours thrown in. I wear vintage silk floaty camis all Summer, & wool ankle length skirts all Winter. Enjoy clothes.

Pistachiocake · 15/12/2025 21:01

Some of youngsters in my family are always trying to find Y2K stuff online, and not that I'm really into fashion magazines, but the odd article I've seen says ballerinas are back in style (personally I never found them comfy, but maybe it depends which brand). Anyway, wear whatever you want, the days of having to wear a certain thing should be long gone.

AwfullyGood · 15/12/2025 21:10

I agree with you, everything in the shops is awful.

I'm still waiting for my ultimate fashion era - if any fashion desigbers want to cater for 5ft nothing, hourglass figures who love tailoring, I'll be top of the queue.

Flyingintotheunknown · 15/12/2025 21:15

Oh op I’m so in agreement with you. I’m sick to death of the joggers and hoodie trend along with jeans and trainers and athleisure wear.

People wearing the same clothes on a night out or evening meal at a restaurant as they do when they do their food shopping, school runs, running errands. Everyone wearing trainers with absolutely everything.

This all seems to have come about during Covid when we were in lockdown and people were either wearing gym stuff to do Joe Wicks exercises or lounging about in joggers. But that was almost 6 years ago now, yet we seem to be stuck in a time warp where everyone seems to have been wearing the same clothes for the last 6 years now.

I cannot wait for the current fashion trends to be gone!

ClassicBBQ · 15/12/2025 21:23

Also sick of it, and very annoyed that children's fashion is the same. I don't want to dress my lovely DD in beige tracksuits!

Patagonia21 · 15/12/2025 21:33

Shorter tops work well with wide jeans and trousers. There are some gorgeous red tops around at the moment as well as sparkly Christmas tops and lots of animal prints. It’s not all dull. I’m enjoying wearing browns as an alternative to black.

My thoughts are that leggings and gym wear are for exercising or walking the dog in mud but why wear them constantly? It doesn’t take much to smarten up a bit.

Sparkly Christmas tops are only here until Xmas though. Then it’s back to the same dull stuff that people have been wearing day in, day out for the last 6 years.

I agree it doesn’t take much to smarten up, just nobody seems to want to anymore.

Patagonia21 · 15/12/2025 21:43

Yes I agree. I love watching what people are wearing and feeling inspired and am finding this so demotivating. My parents generation were so smart with little to spend.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 15/12/2025 21:47

Want longer and heavier knitwear and t-shirts, then buy menswear, I do. H&M is great for reasonably priced sparkle wear and their in-store sale has started. Boden has colour, although quality was better from earlier collections, so Vinted might be worth a look. As for sausage skin leggings (I do admire the stretch some of these leggings managed to achieve lol), none shall ever enter my wardrobe and sportswear is strictly for the gym. I treasure my clothing and have items in my wardrobe that are a fair few years old, but still feel current, and shop far and wide but there are some gems out there, just takes a lot of looking to find them. Going out, even just during the day, I dress up, wear my costume jewellery and generally have fun with colour and textures including wearing velvet and sequin shirts during the day. Maybe we should start a campaign to embrace a little glam and kick out the drab and mega stretchy!!

TheendofmrY · 15/12/2025 21:48

I dunno, I spent the early 2000s in wide leg jeans and oversized tees so I’m quite at home at the mo. Last thing I want is to be able to buy nothing but skinnies again.

gogomomo2 · 15/12/2025 21:50

Wear whatever you like. All of those clothes are available in normal shops. I’m in straight legged jeans and a floaty cami top right now, chunky knit cardigan currently but have a sparkly one.

Lamentingalways · 15/12/2025 21:51

Definitely not being unreasonable but I love all the comfort 😂

I do feel like you can kind of wear whatever you want these days though which is great. Finding what you like is tricky though if it’s not on trend.

phoenixrosehere · 15/12/2025 21:54

I wear what I like. I never gave up my skinny jeans or flares or any of the things you described. I’m still wearing a Betsy Johnson plaid skirt I bought before I met my husband 15 years ago.

It’s all cyclical any way.

I am a middle part girl though because that’s what suits me best.

I love my leggings especially my black lululemon ones because they go easily with my nice neutral structured tops, my jewel-toned jumpers, and array of footwear.

Will say I don’t like how boxy tops seem to be.

SmileyMoonset · 15/12/2025 21:56

I don’t know any grown women who dress like that.

In fact my DD and her friends (late teens) don’t dress like that either.

Stylish people dress to their own taste and to suit their own body type. Suit yourself and you’ll look fabulous.
