I hate today’s fashion!!!!

Stupid black shapeless sportswear items, jogging bottoms, everything plain and dull and beige. Awful centre parting that make me look like Hey Arnold.

I’m desperate for the early 2000s fashion to make a proper comeback - little sequin boleros, floaty camis, skinny jeans, ballerina pumps, long hair with a side parting, everything in pretty colours with a bit of sparkle and nice jewellery.

Yes yes my next big birthday will be 40 and heading for that ‘everything now is shite’ phase but I mean it this time!!

I was just thinking the other day how much I like current fashion but then I realised I only really see it on Instagram which obviously feeds me exactly what I like. I haven’t really seen any black sportswear- in my bubble everyone’s wearing beautiful silk shirts or Victorian nighties 😂

well other than the plain, dull and beige didn’t know jogging bottoms were in fashion. Wait. Nope. They are not.

there’s me in wide leg trousers, midi skirts, slouchy cashmere jumpers, thinking I was in fashion, instead I’m supposed to be in joggers and shapeless sportswear. Who knew.

as for the plain dull and beige, love all the pale colours, cream, beige, tan, soft sea greens, so I guess I’m in fashion with rhe colours. 😂

my hair is long with a side parting. So I guess that offsets my pale colours win.

GarlicRound · 15/12/2025 22:23

... but, but ... what you've described isn't 'fashion'. It's young adult uniform, pretty much as it has been for the last 50 years. Black & beige go together and with most other things, they require little to no thought, and look averagely 'smart' even if it's comfy sportswear.

So you seem to be saying you want to look like 50% of the twenty-somethings out there but don't like the way they look? 😕

Fashion's been exploding since the start of the pandemic. Even at high street level, there are so many different shapes, textures and colour combinations! I can't understand how someone who cares about fashion has failed so totally to notice this!

Anyway, OP, you'll be pleased to hear the SS26 collections were gleaming with shiny fabrics, even glitter, in origami-esque folds that layered diaphanous voiles over and under more solid textured and glimmering fabrics.

The folding won't make it to the high street, but the floaty shimmer will. The play-safe majority will still be in stretch black & beige. Take your pick.

OhDear111 · 15/12/2025 22:31

@HoneyParsnipSoupThats a bizarre summary of fashion! You seem to have a very narrow view. Don’t you ever see anyone who is stylish? You seem to like boho. Plenty available in the summer. Why buy clothes you do not like and it’s certainly not fashion! Look at Vogue or Red for everyday styles. You don’t seem to be trying very hard!

Pearlstillsinging · 15/12/2025 22:39

Surely it's better to know that you look good in what you choose to wear, regardless of what's on trend?
I must admit I look at fashion photos and wonder what people really think they look like. As I read somewhere, "women no longer look good because of what they wear but rather in spite of their clothes". Nothing seems to take account of body shapes, or indeed anything else, all outfits appear grungy.
Wear what makes you feel good, OP.

They aren’t in fashion but everyone still wears them. Same as they do jeans and trainers… for every single occasion whether it’s lazing about at home or going on a night out.
Like I said upthread, a lot of people seem to have been stuck in a time warp since Covid and have been wearing pretty much the same thing ever since. There are plenty of other items in shops, just people stick to the same old jeans and trainers or joggers.

wannanamechange · 15/12/2025 22:41

I like the current fashion, although my favourite fashion period was late 90s/early 2000s when it was the bootcut jeans with heels underneath, and satin Karen Millen tops.
Skinny jeans with ballet flats were the absolute worst for my figure.

OneJollyPinkEagle · 15/12/2025 22:42

When did ballerina pumps and skinny jeans leave? You have always been able to buy them

OhDear111 · 15/12/2025 22:43

@PearlstillsingingSome women choose those clothes - others do not. There’s a fantastic choice of clothes. Who needs joggers and sportswear? Not people interested in fashion!

HoskinsChoice · 15/12/2025 22:45

Unless you're 7 years old, you are being very unreasonable. Grow up and get your own style instead of following 'fashion' like some kind of brain dead sheep.

WinterOnItsWayOut · 15/12/2025 22:48

My 17YO DD has commandeered my early 2000 sparkly tops and is wearing them to school so you could be in luck!

ElleintheWoods · 15/12/2025 22:59

I voted YABU because I don't understand... just wear what you like and have your own style, surely?

I dress pretty much as you describe, pretty colours, skinny jeans, cute ballet bumps (Chanel sells them so... you know, they're not THAT out of fashion!), I did recently move my side parting to the middle but honestly that just suits me better. And, gasp, skinny jeans with ankle boots even!

Get stopped several times a day and asked where my clothes are from, especially in central London.

While I wear mostly vintage and 2nd hand cothing, lots of brands sell that kind of style for this current season. In the fashion circles, 2000s 2nd hand items are absolute gold dust, 20-something fashion girlies are fighting over them! If I still had all of my 2000s wardrobe I'd make a killing.

Absolutely no chance I'd go anywhere near a pair of jogging bottoms or anything beige, ever. Pale pink, absolutely!

Just be yourself, darling, everyone else is already taken. Wear what makes you look and feel your best.

canklesmctacotits · 15/12/2025 23:27

I can’t believe you’re wearing no your own hair, on your own head, in a style you hate, just to be “fashionable” or not look dated!

Firstly, nobody is paying that much attention to you, they’re far too wrapped up in themselves. Secondly, I reckon a solid 90% of the population wouldn’t be able to tel you that a center part more fashionable than a side part. Thirdly, if it’s less flattering on you than a side part you’re seemingly making yourself look worse in a bid to stay current…which is guaranteed to make you look dated.

You say you’re coming up to 40. Give it a few more years and you really won’t care about this at all - and it’s fucking great!! You’ll regret this effort and time wasted slavishly following fashion (which is ultimately brands telling you what to wear to make money). Just wear what you want, whatever it is.

whatsnewpussycat34 · 15/12/2025 23:33

I want the 80s to come back.

Full blown Madonna, Wham 80s

I agree that I wouldn’t be wearing trends I don’t like just to be ‘in fashion’ either.

The issue is trying to find things in shops that aren’t dull and boring when a lot of shops only seem to sell dull and boring nowadays. Places like new look and River Island used to be great for fashion many years ago. Now they just have the same dull and boring clothes and clothes a lot of people would never dream of wearing.

I always wear what I like, whilst trying to keep it timeless and stylish. However it still doesn’t take away from the fact that almost everyone else is either wearing jeans and trainers or or they are wearing joggers or gym wear - which I think is sooooo 2020 now. People don’t seem to have moved on from the covid era despite the fact it was 6 years ago now….yet everyone is still wearing the exact same type of clothing they did during lockdown. And certain shops also seem to have also jumped on the bandwagon.

I laughed at the Hey Arnold comment. I’ll be honest, DH has a colleague in her 40s who is constantly trying to follow fashions and she just looks really silly. Like an obviously middle aged woman trying hard to be young. It doesn’t make you look cool or ‘with it’ because you’re obviously not 20 so I’d just wear whatever the hell you like and screw what’s in fashion.

DarkForces · 16/12/2025 05:34

I'm mid 40s and have just completely refreshed my wardrobe with only things I'll enjoy wearing. Life's too short to wear stuff other people tell you that you should. I've completely changed my style from my 20s as that was nearly half a lifetime ago but I'm embracing colour, figure skimming shapes, bold fabrics and a bit of swoosh. With Vinted and eBay you can get so many bargains. Have fun!

This! I’m in my 40s and seeing other women 40+ wearing joggers and hoodies with their hair wrapped up in a bun on top of their head on the school run does look a bit like they’re trying way too hard to fit in with the younger school mums.

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 16/12/2025 10:33

Seriously where are all you people that no one wears colour?

InterestedDad37 · 16/12/2025 10:36

Wear what you want to wear, set your own fashions, they have to start somewhere.

SparkleSpriteDust · 16/12/2025 10:39

I would love to see 1940's fashion return.

They knew how to dress.

I do own quite a few 1940's style items.

OneJollyPinkEagle · 24/12/2025 07:50

Fashionable is such a funny term. Just because something is 'fashionable' doesn't mean it will suit everyone. I think if you dress in a way thag suits you personally, that is more fashionable!

Bikergran · 24/12/2025 07:57

I went round a big shopping centre the other day and the 2 main "looks" in the windows for Christmas sermed to be "underage belly-dancing tart" or "depressed Victorian governess". Strangely enough, I identify with neither group....

Nobody is stopping you wearing pretty clothes, OP, just because everyone else is wearing boring stuff. Look at "faux-vintage" brands like Collectif, or Blue Banana. This year for Christmas Day I shall be in gold-accented floaty aqua chiffon and gold sandals. Enjoy yourself!!!!

cloudtreecarpet · 24/12/2025 08:04

My two are late teens, early 20s and they are wearing Y2k vintage fashion because they say it's "back in". 🤷‍♂️
They buy stuff from Vinted & charity shops and so do their friends. No plain joggers and trainers for them, rather colourful cropped cardigans and jumpers, short skirts, boots, little bags worn under the arm etc etc

There are always different styles of fashion "in" at one time.

This years Xmas fashion has been awful. I’ve really struggled this year to find something suitable for a night out that isn’t either extremely figure hugging and showing every lump and bump you’ve got, which if you have a c-section belly like me that just sticks out isn’t a great look, or they’ve been something like the ‘depressed Victorian governess’ style you describe which would make me look 20 years older than I am. I did manage to find something eventually but it wouldn’t have been something I’d have chosen to wear if there had been other better choices available to choose from.
