What everyday things do you find utterly charming/chic?

I feel extremely accomplished and satisfied when I make a homemade pudding. I have no idea why. Probably because I came from a family where I don’t think a single thing was homemade. Seeing a homemade cake on a stand in my fridge actually makes me happy.

i also love seeing people lounging at home in battered jeans, jumper and very comfy/fluffy looking socks. Even better if they are stripey. It’s so cosy to me.

Piles of newspapers and magazines on a coffee table that actually get read is another one.

Really odd I know!

When my little westie puts his chin on my leg when we are sat doing nothing.

And the way my husband puts on the porch light when anyone has gone out - even just to the shop for 2 minutes.

Yes! There are 3 old women in my neighbourhood, every morning they go to the park together for a walk, have a quick chat with other locals, and then stop at the coffee shop for pastries and tea, they seem to be living their best lives, I don't know their personal stories at all, whether they're widowed, whatever, but they have each other for sure.

They're probably merry widows 😂

This will probably sound weird but I find slim ankles charming!

With flats and tan tights ?........Absolutely !

This is my theory too. They look too happy to be having a grumpy man at home.

I'm a very unchic middle aged woman. I always love seeing chic older people out and about at art galleries and places like that.

I run an art gallery and look an absolute (male) frump. I follow gallery accounts on TikTok and need to make more effort with clothes in 2026!

'Civil enforcement officers' waddling up the road.

Maybe I'll get dressed up to go to an art gallery too!

In the spirit of this thread, yesterday a Boden wool dress arrived for me from Vinted and it stinks of air freshener which even a steam clean hasn’t removed, so it is currently hanging on the pear tree in the sunshine in the frosty garden to air and it makes me happy whenever I see it.

My chicken. I always liked these quaint things that 'every kitchen should have'. My Mum never had a ceramic chicken to keep eggs in and I always admired my friends chickens. I mentioned it to MiL once when i noticed she had one, she remembered that Christmas and bought me one.

I love those!
I have always wanted one but I have an egg skelter instead, which keeps the eggs in order.

That first properly warm weekend day, when you get to sit outside in the garden with a coffee.

ToadRage · 31/12/2025 12:14

Also like seeing older couples who are still so in love, my grandparents were married for 71 years and totally adored each other. Even after he moved into a care home, she visited him every day and left sandwiches in his fridge, I swear she thought they weren't feeding him.

I can't have children and I love seeing them. Especially well behaved ones, sat in cafes or just walking down the road, when I smile at them and they smile back.

I love this thread! Things I find chic/ charming:
long grey hair with a bold pair of glasses on a chain. Also bonus points for chunky jewellery and a chic scarf.
cats in cosy beds or curled up somewhere cosy
when it’s a weekend morning and we all have breakfast in the kitchen
making a Sunday roast for my family while listening to the radio and my DH playing with DD in the next room
the smell of coffee
having photos of my DD/family around the house as well as drawings she’s done
seeing our shoes by the door
when my DD finds something funny and does a proper little laugh.
when the cat gets into bed with us at night (it’s so cute that he wants to be near us 🥹)
Buying veg/fruit from a farmers market instead of Waitrose
homemade cakes
Strangers who smile and say hello

Cats snoozing on the rug before the log burner.

our 18 year old boy died in September so this is the first Christmas without him this year and we threw away the fluffy rug in front of our wood burner because it was just too painful to look at without him snuggled on it. 😪

When gay marriage begame legal, newspaper wedding announcements for elderly couples called things like Roger and Stanley 🥹

Hand knitted jumpers.

We have a section of our garden we plant with flowers for cutting. All summer long, we have vases and jugs filled with traditional English flowers. It makes me happy.

Oh I’d love to do this. What do you grow please?

sodabreadjam · 31/12/2025 19:58

Receiving a well-chosen greetings card with nice handwriting on the envelope and inside - particularly through the post.

My mother had beautiful handwriting and her cards were a joy to receive. I aspire to do the same - I use italic pens and different colored inks.

buckleberryferry · 31/12/2025 20:23

All of the previous. I love a country cottage which is really traditional with freestanding kitchen cupboards but then a yellow or other brightly coloured log burner.

I’m not massively into ornaments but white houses sat on the corner of the shelf I love.

Little girls in ditsy print dresses, DGD had one in autumn colours in the autumn and I could’ve eaten her 🥰

A surprise gift or card, especially home made. But it’s usually me that’s the giver…

This is a beautiful post. I have experience of a similar grief and I am sorrier for you than I can say.

I wish I could say that each Christmas is a bit easier than the previous one. That’s broadly true, but not true every year. I suppose the positive view is that our grief is the other side of our love, but as much as I want to hold the loving memories close this can sometimes feel like a mighty stretch.

The intensity of the grief does slowly lessen over time, without losing the good. I wish you the beginning of healing in 2026.

My 7 year old autistic son insists on eating his meals in his room as he can't stand to eat with other people. His room gets gross during the course of the day. I fin it comforting when I've changed his bed, hoovered and arranged his squish mallows on his bed so it's gone from a tip to cosy and inviting for a nice sleep.
I also like fruit platters for my middle children who absolutely devour fruit in summer (strawberries mainly)
For me it's a pour over coffee with a cooked (from frozen) pastry before everyone else wakes up

Thank you so much. How kind. You capture it all in a few words.

'It was only a cat' some might say but to us, he was part of us, our family, and will be forever missed.

He came to me in a dream, the night before last...a bit younger than when he left, purring and he flopped on me and fell asleep. Dreams like this bring me peace; knowing he is also in peace.

Thank you for your kind words.

Another Westie owner here … they are just the best.
