What everyday things do you find utterly charming/chic?

I feel extremely accomplished and satisfied when I make a homemade pudding. I have no idea why. Probably because I came from a family where I don’t think a single thing was homemade. Seeing a homemade cake on a stand in my fridge actually makes me happy.

i also love seeing people lounging at home in battered jeans, jumper and very comfy/fluffy looking socks. Even better if they are stripey. It’s so cosy to me.

Piles of newspapers and magazines on a coffee table that actually get read is another one.

Really odd I know!

Putting a few stitches into my latest cross stitch whilst enjoying a cup of tea.

Walking arm in arm with either of my DDs (surely having two is doubly chic?).

Sending hand written greeting cards, even better if I use my fountain pen.

Leaving my phone at home, picking up something unique/vintage in a charity shop, then reading a book in a nice coffee shop. Bliss.

Having candles burning in unexpected corners, like in our down stairs loo, next to the kettle or on the windowsill in the utility room. Makes the whole house feel cosy & loved.

Decanting my daily collagen powder, vitamin tablets and winter cordial into pretty, vintage jars & bottles (there's no plastic, on display, in my kitchen anymore).

A curled up sleeping cat.
A vase of flowers / foliage that’s seasonal rather than imported even if that’s a £1 bunch of spring daffodils.

Yes this. We have always had our cats and dogs allowed on the sofa. And upstairs. And everywhere- that's what wet vax carpet shampoo cleaners were invented for for a start.

Couple of years ago we got a very old 19 year old rescue cat. She had no idea at all she was allowed upstairs. After a few weeks we twigged. So we carried her upstairs, and introduced her to all the sofas and chairs and the beds. My hat, this was such a gamechanger for her. One happy happy cat. It has been known for DH to sit on the floor because the cat's on his favourite chair. He's fine with it. Just seeing the pleasure it brings for her to know that there are no boundaries and she can go anywhere.

Oh yes, I put all my hand wash, shampoo etc into nice dispensers and I love it.

We have a section of our garden we plant with flowers for cutting. All summer long, we have vases and jugs filled with traditional English flowers. It makes me happy.

I am a rubbish gardener but I do have some lovely roses and when I cut them and have them in a vase in my house it makes me feel happy

Oh yes. Definitely charming. DD is 8 but I still love when she reaches for my hand. I also love seeing toddlers holding hands with their mums/dads.

I also love seeing little children using proper china mugs/proper cultery, not plastic. I love how charmed they can be by 'grown up' things.

Also charming and I think chic in a very Country Living kind of way: fresh-cut Christmas trees tied onto the roof of a car. I just saw a nice older man in a flat cap very ably heave his enormous 10-foot tree onto the back of his car and tie it up, and it made me feel very festive and happy.

Yes, how much little children love to play grown up is very cute indeed. Babyccinos get ridiculed on MN but is there anything more adorable than a toddler on their dad’s lap sipping from a matching takeaway cup?!

A colleague told me just yesterday that his 2 year-old daughter has a toy laptop and loves playing ‘work’ because she sees him at his laptop and wants to copy. Too cute. 🥰

Mine is tea leaves, in a tea pot, with a tea strainer, a jug of milk and teacups with saucers.

Aw yes. And his excitement when he sees a bus or even better the rubbish truck/binmen, he literally squeals with excitement and my heart melts.

Cats snoozing on the rug before the log burner.

hyggetyggedotorg · 17/12/2025 16:32

My grown up children smiling & laughing together.

A cat’s smile. Where they close their little eyes & just look so happy & content.

A freshly mown lawn.

Waves breaking on rocks.

We always have lots of blankets and soft cushions on the sofa, big fluffy bean bags with cushions and blankets for the kids to chill out on.

My possible strange one is I love to have a guest basket in the bathroom, things a guest might need so chewing gum, mints, hand sanitiser, spray deodorant, hairspray, hair pins and bands, couple of different body sprays, personal products of different types just makes me smile when it's all stocked up for any guests who drop by.

Chic for me is a classic outfit with tweed, navy or leather. Hopefully with good quality accessories and fragrance.
Charming is a lamp lit room with a burning candle preferably in a cottage or farmhouse style abode.
I live in neither unfortunately but have lots of old fashioned homeware such as copper pans etc.

Sweetpea333 · 18/12/2025 15:01

There was a lovely thread like this a while ago about old lady style/chic but I can't find it.

SquashPenguin · 18/12/2025 15:09

I love walking past expensive townhouses in places like Chelsea where they don’t close the curtains at night, and all you can see is shelves upon shelves of books. It just looks so sophisticated and inviting.

Emmz1510 · 18/12/2025 15:20

I agree with you about home baking. I’m not a bad baker and love to see my own creations on display, it cheers me up enormously.
I love it when I’m in someone’s home who has a good eye for interior design. Not necessarily everything matching/coordinated. In my cousins home nothing matches but it’s still so wonderfully cute and well
thought out.
I love being in my own garden when it’s looking tidy with stuff growing. I’m not really a gardener and only have a small patch for flowers (the rest of it is grass/lanscaped). This year I want to put pots of bulbs around the place.

I was in M&S the other day and an elderly gentleman was helping his wife choose some new slippers. She was using a wheelchair, so for her to try the slippers on her husband had to kneel down (which was a challenge in itself due to his age) and put it on her foot. It was like Cinderella finding her prince. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything as heartwarming. I’ve thought about it every day since and it makes me smile.

Ohhh this has made me cry.
I lost the love of my life over 30 years ago, he was only in his mid forties.
Seeing older couples who very obviously still love and care for each other gets me every time.
It makes me wonder if we'd still be like that if he was still here....

Yes! This is exactly what I mean. Grin I love it.

There's a house i pass during my daily walk - always a beautiful cat curled up or sprawled on its dedicated window cat bed. Slap bang in the middle of the bay window.

I swear my mood lifts an extra notch when the £1 daffs start appearing 🌼

I tend to go mad and spend a whole £5 on daffs for all the rooms and then afterwards buy a bunch at a time until the ones in my garden come out.

And the tulips! Spring flowers are my favourite thing about Spring, it's the only season I pretty much constantly have flowers in vases everywhere inside because they are so cheap compared to the rest of the year!

Seeing someone walking their dog in the park. Just a cute little unit of two enjoying each other's company.

Old women out socialising with their friends.

Yes! There are 3 old women in my neighbourhood, every morning they go to the park together for a walk, have a quick chat with other locals, and then stop at the coffee shop for pastries and tea, they seem to be living their best lives, I don't know their personal stories at all, whether they're widowed, whatever, but they have each other for sure.
