I feel extremely accomplished and satisfied when I make a homemade pudding. I have no idea why. Probably because I came from a family where I don’t think a single thing was homemade. Seeing a homemade cake on a stand in my fridge actually makes me happy.

i also love seeing people lounging at home in battered jeans, jumper and very comfy/fluffy looking socks. Even better if they are stripey. It’s so cosy to me.

Piles of newspapers and magazines on a coffee table that actually get read is another one.

Really odd I know!

Little scraggy-haired mix breed terrier dogs, especially with elderly owners.
When my girls were little they innocently coined the term ‘little shaggers’ to describe these dogs. Now the oldest is at uni, younger DD’s update her on the little shaggers they’ve seen about the town.

I can’t find the comments now 🔍 but I agree with the waking up and no housework/cake in fridge can get a bit hard/frosty mornings yes/turf fire smell yes/cats yes/sea swim yes/ my parents still display some of my “artwork” and I had a little cry when an elderly patient was wearing hand knitted gloves 🥹 I nominate this thread for classics

The smell of my warm Labrador…especially his feet, which smell like popcorn.

Old couples holding hands when they are out walking. Or sharing a joke sat on a bench in the park. Melts my heart. 💓

I was in M&S the other day and an elderly gentleman was helping his wife choose some new slippers. She was using a wheelchair, so for her to try the slippers on her husband had to kneel down (which was a challenge in itself due to his age) and put it on her foot. It was like Cinderella finding her prince. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything as heartwarming. I’ve thought about it every day since and it makes me smile.

Oh I love that. ❤️❤️

Walking in to a pub when it’s freezing outside and they have an open fire going and the smell of that combined with ale and wine. Preferably with candles on the tables.

I live on a farm and am always delighted, in Spring, to see all the baby lambs frolicking in the fields. It’s so heart-warming.

Advocodo · 16/12/2025 22:57

I felt very pleased with my homemade cranberry sauce last Xmas. Tasted great.

Advocodo · 16/12/2025 22:59

Looking forward to curling up in my bed every night!

Not charming or chic, but all our fridge magnets. They all hold memories of travels shared and places visited with each other. Happy times before illness and old age decimated our family.

Oh likewise. Also the bluebell wood.

Dedicated armchair for a dog, where nobody in the house would dream of sitting because it’s the dog’s.

That reminds me, DH and I were in a cosy market town pub once, there was a dog sitting in a chair. At one point he got up from the chair and went somewhere, and a man sat there. Then the dog came back and barked at the man until he got up, whereupon the dog reclaimed his seat.

A squishy sofa in the kitchen ( if the kitchen is big enough). My god mother had this (as well as a big table and chairs -she had a big farmhouse kitchen) and it’s been my ambition ever since

This. Though we call them scrappy dogs. Little Shaggers is a better term though :)

Such a beautiful thread
for me
-comfortable home, eclectic, lots blankets and throws and cushions in different colours and textures
-candles, red wine, a good book and mumsnet!
-clothes that make me feel good , bold lippy, pink in my hair
-a lovely movie with a large glass wine
-cuddles from my Westie .. in bed with low light

piscofrisco · 17/12/2025 06:20

People saying ‘please may I have…’ instead of the now ubiquitous ‘can I get…’

this thread itself is charming and chic and beautiful and just what is needed at this time of year (and always)!

thebabessavedme · 17/12/2025 09:52

I love threads like this, the things that seem to make make most of us happy are very 'humble', no one says 'oh I love to look at my porsche in the drive', or 'taking my chanel bag' etc, those things are obviously nice to own but the true things that seem to are always to do with home, hearth and family, we need to remember that in our mad world of consumption.

I saw a silly instagram video the other day which was ‘when a woman has one daughter as her only child, so chic’

I have a mixture 😂 but saw a woman having lunch with her adult daughter today, and I agreed, so chic.

She might have four sons at home for all I know, but still- I got what the content creator was saying.

I don’t see how that is ‘chic’ - not as I understand the word!

The most chic thing ever is an older woman staying alone in a nice hotel with a Little Shagger dog in tow. Doesn’t have to be mixed breed necessarily but it has to be short-legged and ideally a terrier or terrier-adjacent.

My dog peacefully snoozing on my lap while I read a book.
Clean sheets
Tidy clean but comfortable house.
Symmetry (photos, square rooms etc)

Oh yes. I also love the twinkling lights of a village across fields, especially in Winter. The sight of a fox dashing across a snowy field and leaving the lightest trail of prints. Early spring flowers nestling under fruit trees in the orchard. A blackbird enjoying the last of the Autumn berries. The first time blue tits bring their new family to feed at the bird table. Tall, vibrant, beautifully cared for house plants in a sunny, perfectly lit room.
