Right to bear arms

I lived in the USA for 8 yrs and all my neighbours had guns, as a Brit I totally disagreed with this…. However since returning to the UK over the last 10 years, I’ve started to think they have a point. If UK law changes and I can purchase guns to protect myself and my family, I will absolutely do this. I feel I have the right to protect myself as the police are not available.

Protect you from what exactly?

RhwDjj · 13/12/2025 18:21

I actually do agree with you. But I'm putting YABU for making this bait thread which will only start a massive fight here.

sickleaveornot · 13/12/2025 18:22

Absolutely not, America needs tighter gun control, not to be the standard people should be aiming for.

We already have a problem with knife crime, adding in easily available guns is just going to cause more problems

PrincessofWells · 13/12/2025 18:23

I always bare arms in the summer . . .

cheerfulaf · 13/12/2025 18:24

Ah yes, guns for everyone! Our school children are far too safe in this country

MirrorMirror1247 · 13/12/2025 18:24

If the gun laws here were relaxed, there could be another Dunblane. Which is exactly why they were tightened in the first place.

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 13/12/2025 18:24

Where do you live? I’ve lived in some rough parts of the UK and never felt I might need a gun to protect myself.

I always bare arms in the summer . . .

I only do if I’m feeling confident, otherwise I’m a concealed carry sort of girl 😂

MadTurkey · 13/12/2025 18:30

Absolutely. The right to bear arms has turned the US into such a peacenik utopia.

Poms · 13/12/2025 18:31

I doubt the goady OP will be back.

The whole point of our strict gun laws are that the vast majority of us are not going round shooting each other
We also dont have school shotings...

surprisebaby12 · 13/12/2025 18:35

There’s a reason they have mass killings every day, and the ability to protect themselves with a gun is a huge part of that

Changingplace · 13/12/2025 18:36

If you bothered to look at the actual laws you could probably own a shotgun in the UK if you really wanted to, my dad has a shotgun licence.

But I assume you just want a row, which is kind of boring.

Nobody in the UK wants fewer gun laws thank you, if that’s such a big deal for you then please feel free to move back to the USA, where the irony is that general people think they need guns to protect themselves from the rest of the general population…

Yep, my bingo wings that could take a man's eye out if I turn too fast.

HeadyLamarr · 13/12/2025 18:43

My uncle had a gun licence for a shotgun on his farm; it's possible to have a gun if you've a valid reason.

However a gun-owning culture is the last thing any country needs. You just have to look at the death statistics.

From whom do you need protection? This isn't a war zone. How would it protect you|? People who own guns are far more likely to die by gunshot than those who don't.

Greggsit · 13/12/2025 18:45

Guns are far more likely to injure or kill their owners or family members than any criminals. You're an idiot.

FellowSuffereroftheAbsurd · 13/12/2025 18:46

The UK law doesn't need to change for you to own a gun - you can get a firearm license if you want and meet the criteria. I have at least one coworker with one - he uses for sport and hunting - and I live in walking distance from a shooting range.

I'm not sure it's going to protect you from anything - statistically, it makes your family more likely to be harmed by a gun - the gun you have - and unless you are going to join a range or gun club and regularly practice to be skilled enough at maintaining and using it, there is little reason to think you're going to be able to use it well in a crisis.

US gun ownership is very regional. I lived in the US for 17 years, and none of my neighbours ever had guns. The first time I saw a gun in person was after I moved to the UK, while in London.

InterestedDad37 · 13/12/2025 18:48

Makes as much sense as the right to arm bears 🔫🐻

RhwDjj · 13/12/2025 18:49

This is a thread created just so we all go and have a fight. OP won't return.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 13/12/2025 18:49

No thanks. The evidence is clear that guns do not make the US safer. Quite the contrary.

If you want to live in a country where any nutter can get their hands on a gun, please go back to the US. We don't want any of that nonsense over here.

Joeninety · 13/12/2025 18:50

Don't you think the baddies would love to get guns, even easier than they do now, too ?

IngridBurger · 13/12/2025 18:51

Don't be daft

Ironically I think we are all in agreement.

I mean, it didn’t turn out too well for Charlie Kirk…
