No he will be with his father who has taken 3 weeks of leave

Now that sounds like a thread.

Why do you even need the nursery for half a day if your dc’s dad is on leave.

She doesn't - the point is that she's paying for something she couldn't use even if she needed to, as it's shut.

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 13/12/2025 15:54

When mine were at nursery, I always viewed the monthly fees as an average daily rate that took into account bank holidays etc across the whole nursery, rather than a strict and exact cost for one day's attendance. You're there for a while, and the nursery still needs to function over holiday periods in terms of fixed costs.

Are you with his father?

who pays the nursery bill?

HillBetty · 13/12/2025 15:54

Also most nurseries are monthly payments so the monthly fees will be spread accross 12 months and factor in closures over xmas.

It should be clear on your contract or fees page.

This wouldn’t bother me. It’s hard hard work for shit pay. Saying that, my children have never gone to nursery on Christmas Eve. I’d take them out regardless if I had already paid for it. It’s Christmas Eve!

Lots of parents have to work as normal on Christmas Eve (I appreciate OP isn't one of them).

Why do you even need the nursery for half a day if your dc’s dad is on leave.

That’s not the point, the dad may want to go and do Xmas shopping without ferrying the kid around, he may want to rest etc, so they’re paying for a service they want to use

SushiForMe · 13/12/2025 15:55

Just ridiculous, I wonder if people having a regular class or recurring appointment would be so happy to still pay when the service provider decided to close.
So you sign up for a class every Friday, the yearly price is based on x classes in total, but then during the year they tell you that actually one class will be skipped to give employees time off but the price is still the same.
The nursery is giving an extra day off to employees and basically telling all parents they have to finance it.

i pay for an annual rail card.

over Christmas the service stops

Is this not the same?

Enko · 13/12/2025 15:56

Yes YABU. The overheads of the nursery costs insurance etc doesnt stop. The human beings who looks after your child also needs time off.

Also I am certain it is in the contract you signed when you signed your child up for the nursery place.

Hiptothisjive · 13/12/2025 15:59

This is normal nursery behaviour and when we signed contracts for October start it was there in the contract (hours, bank holidays etc).

Maybe check your contract to see if it says this anywhere before complaining?

On a related note, geez let them have a half day. You won’t be there anyway so what does it matter - you paid either way.

sciaticafanatica · 13/12/2025 16:01

The nursery I work at will close at 3 on Xmas eve.
most children will not be in and those that are will be gone by 1.
staff will be given the day off according to numbers but any hours we go early are taken as holidays or toil and the nursery still charges for the full day.

Curly12345 · 13/12/2025 16:03

the nursery my son goes to isn’t even open on Christmas Eve. They’re closing at 4pm on the 23rd. They usually close at 6pm
I didn’t even think to question this but now I feel like I should!
I work in healthcare and both the 23rd and 24th are normal working days for me

bitterexwife · 13/12/2025 15:34

I think you’re a bit mean to be honest!
Nursery likely struggle for staff, therefore struggle to give out annual leave. Half a day on Christmas Eve is barely anything.

And how does that help the parent who is the busiest at work Xmas time and they are needing to find random childcare to cover it

You're not paying to use the service at a specific time when you buy a railcard, though.

The equivalent would be paying for a set ticket on Christmas Eve and then being told you couldn't use it because there were no trains running, but that you weren't entitled to a refund and you couldn't use it on another day either. You just lost your money.

That is why I asked how they charged

termly
or monthly variation according to attendance

HillBetty · 13/12/2025 15:50

Yabu. Our nursery closed early xmas eve and re opened after new year. Never once did I complain about £ or early closing on xmas eve

Assume you didn't have to work with no alternative childcare at that tine

You do realize many workers don't get Xmas eve off aren't you?

If they sold you the card based on the idea that you are paying X amount for 365 days, which adds up to the total they bill you, then yes.

yes - also extremely annoying if you have to get to work. Also the fact that they run a reduced service between Christmas and New Year, but still charge the full peak prices.

It doesn't make it right for nurseries OR rail companies.

But I know the closures when I buy

and I suspect the op will also know if she looked at her contract

dianne2265 · 13/12/2025 16:11

If you will be in Spain you are just being very petty. Even if they were open all day you wouldn't be

Answered plenty of times darling.

They actually charge per term.
