Tesla car recording me in car park

Hideousfrump · 12/12/2025 19:31

I was getting my baby into the car today & was parked next to a Tesla. As I walked past the car, the screen on the Tesla dashboard flashes up saying ‘Sentry mode recording’ & I noticed there was an inbuilt camera on the side of the car.

AIBU to feel quite unsettled that cars are automatically recording other people ?! Surely this can’t be legal. Really not happy that some random person now has footage of my child at their fingertips.

YABU. You're being recorded all the time by various cameras in public spaces.

NormalAuntFanny · 12/12/2025 19:43

It is awful because no doubt your image is being sent to the USA to be saved and uaed for training.

According to DS2 they aren't allowed to use cameras above waist height here (in France) because you own your image unless you say otherwise but because there isn't a similar privacy law in the UK they just can!

Yes but CCTV etc isn’t accessed by some random person - presumably the owner of the Tesla can do what they want with the footage. That’s my concern.

CCTV absolutely is accessed by random people 😂. Do you think only non-corrupt authorized police officers with the highest security clearance are accessing CCTV footage everywhere you go outside your house?!

What do you think random Tesla owner might do with any footage of you putting your child in your car?

00004a · 12/12/2025 19:50

Any could film you on their phone in a public space, you may on lots of dash cam footage. Realistically they’re not going to do anything with the footage or even review it unless there is damage to the car.

EmeraldRoulette · 12/12/2025 19:52

@Hideousfrump I understand why you're annoyed by that

I tried campaigning for privacy laws about 15 years ago. Nobody was interested. People just don't care.

Basically every time we step out of our front door, we're going to be filmed. It really pisses me off.

TootsMaHoots · 12/12/2025 19:54

Anyone can record anybody in a public place. Or take their photograph.

When people go missing you can see how many cameras people are recorded on just going about their businesses. Buses, dash cam, schools, businesses, ring cameras, mobile phones.

paintingtheroses · 12/12/2025 19:56

It's no different to people owning dash-cams or recording you via their doorbells as you walk down the street.

BigFenianEnergy · 12/12/2025 19:56

I parked next to one the other day and exactly the same thing happened. I don’t like it at all but if I had one I’d be glad of this feature. In all likelihood, they won’t even look at the footage unless they come back to a damaged car and want to see who caused it.

Keepoffmyartichokes · 12/12/2025 19:58

The footage isn't sent to Tesla it's stored locally so only the car owner has access and when it goes into sentry mode again it will be recorded over.

pimplebum · 12/12/2025 19:59

The image of your child is unlikely to be clear enough to make child abuse images out of. I’d imagine they have a hat / coat on so So I’d not worry too much

Checknotmymate · 12/12/2025 20:00

I have a Tesla and spent 10 mins trying to get into a Tesla in the car park before realising that it was a different Tesla. So now I am probably on a saved drive somewhere looking like a frazzled lunatic getting my kids to try and get into a random car.

Dancinghedgehog23 · 12/12/2025 20:01

The only time I’ve looked at the recordings is when somebody tried to get in my car. They’d obviously gone to the wrong car, gave me a giggle and then I completed forgot about it. I certainly wouldn’t be able to recognise them in the street.

Soduku1234 · 12/12/2025 20:04

You're being recorded all the time CCTV, shop security cameras, dash cams, ring door bells, people recording events on phones, people taking photos of a nice building etc etc.

If they were someone dodgy I doubt they'd announce they were recording.

And what do you honestly to think they would do with this footage of your child being carried by their mother in a car park?

sittingonabeach · 12/12/2025 20:24

@Dancinghedgehog23 I think you might have found the poster who tried to get into your car!

NaranjaDreams · 12/12/2025 20:28

It’s not just Teslas. Loads of dash cams do this. Our neighbours have two or three, they’re triggered by movement near the vehicle. At least Teslas automatically overwrite the next time the car goes into Sentry mode, external dash cams can have huge memories that store recordings for ages.

Branster · 12/12/2025 20:33

Think even further ahead OP. The Meta Ray Ban glasses an accessible new gadget. There will be video footage of everyone everywhere. I don't know who stores the data in this particular instance and if the images will be used at a later date or manipulated in some way. Quite unsettling.

Isn't this just another version of Google glass?

I remember last time though, people were attacked wearing those, I think that happened in California. It was seen as a step too far. Sadly, I think the world is now ready for them.

Do you also cry about dashcams as well? What about people with mobile phones etc?

You're in public. Its legal.

There is no expectation of privacy.

Get over it. You'll live longer and suffer less self-induced stress. You are filmed zilions of times a day by cameras and CCTV....

SMH 🤦‍♂️

Branster · 12/12/2025 23:09

@EmeraldRoulette it does sound like a similar product.
It's quite scary when you stop and think.
And I'm pretty certain recordings of everything stored by a company would eventually be fed into some AI program.
Wasn't there a big debate about Ring holding onto video files from ring cameras in the US?
We won't be able to tell what is genuine and what is made up in the not so distant future. Let alone actual privacy for the sake of decency. We'll have to behave perfectly everywhere in public for fear of being ridiculed on some social media.
Anyway, there's no going back now.

LarryMiddleman · 12/12/2025 23:34

You have no legal expectation of privacy when out in public. Anyone has the right to photograph or film you with a camera, a phone or a dashcam. Get over it.

EmeraldRoulette · 12/12/2025 23:41

@Branster in terms of not being able to tell what's real and what's made up, that's already happening to some extent.

It is very worrying, but most people don't give a crap.

Nailed it.

Makes you wonder how the OP copes with the endless camera coverage in this country the second you step out into the big bad world! 😂
