Tesla car recording me in car park

I was getting my baby into the car today & was parked next to a Tesla. As I walked past the car, the screen on the Tesla dashboard flashes up saying ‘Sentry mode recording’ & I noticed there was an inbuilt camera on the side of the car.

AIBU to feel quite unsettled that cars are automatically recording other people ?! Surely this can’t be legal. Really not happy that some random person now has footage of my child at their fingertips.

I agree @EmeraldRoulette.
I keep seeing some impressive videos of wildlife on Instagram and it is only on closer inspection I realise they have been AI generated. Even though there might be a nark to signal thus, it is not obvious at first watch. So my brain does a weird loop of 'oh this is really interesting or adorable or whatever', I learn a new piece of information so I feel quite lucky to gave stumbled upon it , then I realise it is fake and feel quite clever for spotting this, then I'm disappointed because it's not real and then I'm annoyed at being lied to. All these emotions at a low level in under a minute, but what will this do to our behaviours if it happens on repeat. How are our brains being shaped? What is this doing to children's brains, especially as they don't have the experience we have and exposure to real content we have had in order to be able to make comparisons.
And this is one tiny example easy to dismiss.
Scale it up and throw it at different environments and we'll be in trouble.

@Hideousfrump sorry I didn't actually address your point while I was having my rant

The Tesla is not the only car that is recording

Everyone has recording devices attached to everything. I know there are a lot of people who get weirdly upset around particular brands, but this isn't a feature of Tesla in particular.

For a long time now, you do need to assume that you're being recorded the minute you step out of your home. My mum's neighbours are incredibly proud of their cameras - though they are dependent on the Internet, I haven't broken the news to them about signal jammers! They get really weirded out every time the camera goes offline.

@Branster yes there's that as well, I was mostly thinking about how things like legal and medical misinformation get into peoples heads. I still don't understand what has happened with the Sandie Peggie case. If the judge genuinely picked some stuff up from AI - bloody hell.

I was chatting with someone who works in tech, a young person, and she genuinely didn't seem to realise that AI is loaded with mistakes. Honestly, she's intelligent. But she was just assuming that it's correct. Bizarre.

The only singular thing about the Tesla recording is you know the footage is going to Tesla towers to be stored for whenever.

IsItSnowing · 13/12/2025 12:08

You can always avoid parking next to or walking close to Teslas if it bothers you that much but probably half the cars in the car park are doing the same.
For what it's worth, when I run our footage through, I quickly note they were just walking past and delete it.
If someone really wants footage of people walking around a car park with a child there are much better ways of doing it. And you'd be completely unaware it was happening.
It's a risk you take when you go out in public.

You could pop something like this on when you go out.
In fact maybe we all should?

I watched a documentary about benefit fraud a while back and people fraudulently claiming PIP being recorded walking without aids, doing various activities that they said they were unable to do on the claim.
not saying this is the case here OP but maybe they have the wrong person or maybe the device is permanently recording for the person in the car potentially fleeing domestic abuse or something.
I wouldn’t get too hung up on it unless you thought the person then drove off looking shifty when you clocked them?

This is a feature the car has if someone or something gets too close it will start recording so if they hit the car it is recorded.
