Not fat shaming I’m very overweight myself and not been a healthy weight for a long time so can’t even imagine what I would look like at a healthy weight

I think so. I'm about 2 stone lighter than I was last year and I still double-take at my own reflection as my body in particular looks so much more youthful and lithe, both in terms of posture and bulk. Because my clothes now slip on effortlessly and hang nicely, and the exercising I've been doing means I move better, I definitely feel like I look better.
My face is obviously slimmer too, and I hit a sweet spot where the double chin which had begun to develop had stubbornly stayed put despite the weightloss one day seemed to have evaporated over the course of a week when the scales showed a small loss of .5kg. When I crept up again just before my period, the double chin was noticeable again. So I now try to stay below the "chin window" so that a bit of hormonal creep doesn't matter.

Chin window! Love it 😂

paradisecircus · 13/12/2025 13:37

Personally I look better at a healthy weight, feel better too

Flingotheflamingo · 13/12/2025 13:48

My healthy weight range is between 99 - 121 lbs.

I’ll tell you now.. I’d look awful at 121lbs.

Currently at 104lbs and don’t like it.

bizkittt · 13/12/2025 13:50

Frequency · 12/12/2025 17:08

Mostly. Although I think some people suit being heavier. Adele, imo, looked better, bigger. Her smaller frame is, of course, healthier for her, but to me, she looked more attractive when she was bigger.

She’s so average looking now

bizkittt · 13/12/2025 13:53

It depends on your height, fitness level and frame etc. I look best when my bmi is 23-24. Most people aren’t much to write home about whenever their size

Gingernaut · 13/12/2025 14:00

People look their best when they are healthy

Beauty standards are so skewed towards 'skinny' or 'thin', that anyone who is a weight healthy for their size is derided as a "heifer", "thunder thighs" or just "fat"

Even if someone is a healthy size for their height and build, there's no telling what kind of eating disorder lurks underneath

I understand OP, I am morbidly overweight and binge eat myself

It's easy to look at people through the lens of an eating disorder, but weight is not someone's personality - there really is more to someone than the numbers on the scales

I think Adele is really attractive, and I perceive her to look much better than she did when obese. If anything being obese overweight is the average, not being a healthy weight. Irrelevant as Adele is famous for her singing ability, and song writing, it isn’t about her appearance.

You come across slightly resentful and bitter. There is plenty of musicians I am not a fan of, but I can appreciate their ability. I think we all know Adele is not average in any way, and you bitterly writing it doesn’t make it so.

LeonMccogh · 13/12/2025 14:22

Nobody (yes, nobody) looks as good fat as they do slim. This has always and will always been the case. All that’s changed recently is that it’s more acceptable to say it.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 13/12/2025 14:24

Yes, though size and shape vary. Similarly a lot of larger ladles look fabulous too.
I think it is harder for overweight men to look well as it sits around the waist.

Elsvieta · 13/12/2025 14:30

Well, some people manage to look cool and attractive and healthy while a bit underweight (young people, usually). But for most of us, yes, we look best at a healthy, 20-25 BMI sort of weight.

SexyFrenchDepression · 13/12/2025 14:51

minipie · 12/12/2025 17:09

Yes generally - although fat does plump out wrinkles to some extent, so a slightly overweight older person might look younger than they would if thinner. Not necessarily “better” overall though.

I can’t remember the exact quote but it’s something like “after a certain age you have to choose your arse or your face”.

I think potentially elderly people maybe look slightly younger if their face is fuller but generally most people up to the age of 60 IMO look old when they are overweight. I sometimes find myself feeling shocked at someone's age when they are say 30ish but quite overweight, I think its like the bloated face and middle aged spread look that ages people.

I havent yet seen someone who was overweight that doesnt look better at a healthy weight (obv I am not talking about how toned they are/loose skin under clothes as obviously I cant see that). I think the same for very thin people, I know a couple of friends in their 40s and 50s and they are very think and look really lined. They are definitely underweight and it isnt a good look.

SexyFrenchDepression · 13/12/2025 14:58

Bambamhoohoo · 12/12/2025 17:10

In your opinion. I don’t think most people look significantly better say, 2/3 stone less or more.

of course if you’re talking about people who are underweight- yes they will look bad, mainly because our instinct is to recoil from people who look starving.

morbidity obese - of course someone won’t look their best physically

but most people are in the middle and not particularly noticeable.

3 stone overweight is quite a lot, there is no way this wouldn't notice. 3 stone under a normal weight would be dangerous for most people. A BMI of around 21/22 for me is 9 stone, 2-3 stone under would be very underweight. 3 stone higher than a BMI of 25 for me would make me over BMI 32 which is obese, not a chance I would look better, in fact even BMI 25 looks chubby on my frame!

2/3 stone heavier. Not 2/3 stone overweight.

But if you were towards top of BMI 24/25 then 3 stone over that would be obese.

I think you’re taking a simple comment and making me nail it to various situations, which wasn’t how it was intended.

i was actually thinking about the many people I’ve known like my best friend- who I see frequently- who lost 2 stone following her divorce and I didn’t even notice. She’s only 4ft11 and whilst she was bit rounder at 2 stone heavier it made no real difference to the way she looked.

i don’t want to get forced to nail examples to every possible type of person and outcome. I said most people 2/3 stone lighter or heavier doesn’t make them look significantly better or worse. I also said most people are completely unnoticeable anyway, in terms of how they “look” to others

Ketzele · 13/12/2025 16:16

I had many years anorexic, and found that the compliments on my figure came in thickest and fastest when I was just about the weight when my periods would stop.

My healthy weight is not the fashionable weight.

Boomer55 · 13/12/2025 16:34

It depends on other things. I lost 7 stones after losing my DH two years ago. My ideal weight.

So, yes, I’m back to the weight I was at 18, but older skin just don’t shrink back. 😳

I’ve got other problems with sag, droop and drop 😳

Yeah.

Being a bit overweight looks fine though.

And some people carry extra weight better than others.

That is definitely not a healthy weight!

I have heard people say this before though, so I know what you mean.

HangingOver · 13/12/2025 16:55

My BMI is always between 17 - 18 but that's just the size I am. I did live off chips, beer and hummus one summer and managed to put on 5 kg and it looked fab actually but then it just went back to normal again.

2 stone on someone who is 4f11 is a massive difference. I genuinely dont believe many people wouldn't notice that unless that person was very overweight to begin, for someone who is very obese then it can take more than that for people to notice. 2 stone on a normal weight 4ft 11 person would put them well into overweight category or into very underweight. I'm 5ft 4 and it would for me even. The only reason people may not notice as much is that when I was 20lb heavier I wore baggy clothes all the time so hid it a lot. If I had worn my normal stuff I woild have looked awful. I know people noticed on me, most polite enough not to say of course.

I think its actually an extremely healthy outlook when people dont notice, those who don't notice, IMO, tend to be the kindest, least judgmental people and also the happiest with how they look themselves. Most people do notice though even if they wouldnt say.
