Not fat shaming I’m very overweight myself and not been a healthy weight for a long time so can’t even imagine what I would look like at a healthy weight

Best I ever looked was bordering on underweight when I was much younger and it was naturally how I was. Years later, expect I’d look awful at the same weight.

bleakmidwintering · 13/12/2025 08:06

@GaIadrielliterally any teen pic aged 15 compared to a glamour shot when you have gazillions is going to look shit by comparison!

My old GP used to say that as we got older, an extra 1/2 stone made people look younger but more importantly, it gave a bit of resilience in case of illness. Looking at friends who are an ideal weight, I think he was right - they do look older than their age.

Yes
Studies show that over 65's do better with an overweight BMI - lower mortality and better health outcomes

I don’t think weight is always important to the way you look

most people look… well pretty unmemorable, I’m really not sure it makes that much difference.

I look like a different person.
Losing weight brings out features that were totally hidden by fat.

This is incorrect and an urban myth, unless I am mistaken and you can link fi this study,

what it is is a bmi of 26 or so will help prevent osteoporosis , and I think a couple of other things, however needs to be offset by the risks associated with being over weight, so for example heart attack stroke diabetes, joint degradation etc. just as people get older, the risks associated with being overweight do not go away, but carrying a small amount extra can have some benefits ie reduced risk of osteroperosis and people need to balance the two, but no one should be believing you hit 70, as it is 70 and over, and you suddenly have no risk associated with being overweight, that it’s dangerous misinformation.

brunettemic · 13/12/2025 08:20

I think people mix up weight with shape.

TheMotherSide · 13/12/2025 08:22

I think so. I'm about 2 stone lighter than I was last year and I still double-take at my own reflection as my body in particular looks so much more youthful and lithe, both in terms of posture and bulk. Because my clothes now slip on effortlessly and hang nicely, and the exercising I've been doing means I move better, I definitely feel like I look better.
My face is obviously slimmer too, and I hit a sweet spot where the double chin which had begun to develop had stubbornly stayed put despite the weightloss one day seemed to have evaporated over the course of a week when the scales showed a small loss of .5kg. When I crept up again just before my period, the double chin was noticeable again. So I now try to stay below the "chin window" so that a bit of hormonal creep doesn't matter.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/12/2025 08:23

Yes. I say that as someone who weighed 13 stone 12 in May (at 5ft 4). Today I'm 10 stone 9. I look loads better.

I love all these posts where women are saying ‘ yeah I look great now I’m thin’. That’s probably what Sharron osbourne and her ghoul daughter are saying too.

wow. Could you be any more jealous.

NorthXNorthWest · 13/12/2025 08:36

Yes, slightly over looks better than slightly under.

Unless you have a medical condition being very underweight or being very over weight should not be celebrated.

And a healthy weight looks better than either.

My comment was support to mean

Yes as in A healthy weight does look miles better. Also slightly over looks better than slightly under.

Unless you have a medical condition being very underweight or being very over weight should not be celebrated.

Health should always be prioritised. It is possible to be slim with a lot of fat around your vital organs. So there is that as well.

PurpleCoo · 13/12/2025 09:51

I think people look better with a healthy BMI yes. I have lost just shy of 30kg this year and always said I would look too thin at a healthy BMI, and it a wasn't accurate/helpful tool. I was wrong and deluding myself. My BMI is 25.1, so still overweight by a smidgeon and I don't look too thin. I have great muscle tone as I exercise a lot, but I still have excess fat on my belly and upper arms. So my slightly overweight status seems accurate. I need to lose more weight to look my best, but only a small amount so I don't look too thin

I don’t think anyone is jealous of Sharon or her daughter.

GaIadriel · 13/12/2025 10:12

There was a time though when a lot of women wanted to look like Kate Moss.

I know. Our generation have such a fucked up attitude to weight (as evidenced in this thread). The pop culture really was poisonous.

I also suspect BMI is based on white bodies. Just a hunch, though a quick Google tells me there is something to that hunch.

I have noticed that in Asian countries that the healthy range is smaller. Over 22.9 is classed as overweight in Singapore, for example.

There are plenty of studies from what I recall but I'm up a hill at the moment and can't look to quote

bleakmidwintering · 13/12/2025 11:33

@Daisywhatsyouranswerare you actually insane. Who on this planet would want to look like them? I would say only people with body dysmorphia!

DailyEnergyCrisis · 13/12/2025 11:54

I’m bmi 21 and my face/neck look better at bmi 23 but my body looks better currently. Can’t have it all!

I wasn’t suggesting you were envious of Sharon or kelly the former an elderly lady who had cancer and the latter someone who has just lost her father.

i was clearly refering to this first part of your envious little statement

I love all these posts where women are saying ‘ yeah I look great now I’m thin’. That’s probably what Sharron osbourne and her ghoul daughter are saying too

at least own it.

HelpMySocksAreTouchingMe · 13/12/2025 12:28

Healthy weight is such a large range that I would think almost everyone would look their best somewhere along that scale.

seanconneryseyebrow · 13/12/2025 12:41

Well then you get into the subjective what weight people look their ‘best’ in. I mean who decides that? I have people in my life - men and women - who probably think I looked best at BMI 20, my exDH defo thinks my best is 25 probably 27 actually. Current boyfriend probably 25 and I expect most boyfriends I’ve had tbf. I lose my tits the lower my BMI goes.
I like me at about 21 but it’s super super hard to keep me there now I’m 51.
although if I got there I may hate my face. I have chubby cheeks that help me look younger.

For me, I’d need to put on about 3 stone to be overweight. I don’t believe that would improve my long term health outcomes.
