Not fat shaming I’m very overweight myself and not been a healthy weight for a long time so can’t even imagine what I would look like at a healthy weight

I lost 5 stones and was constantly told I looked ill so I put a stone back on. I am now at the top end of healthy weight but look and feel so much better.

It’s not because there are plenty of cultures where bigger women are celebrated.

plus, obviously, we’re actually generally disgusted by starvation.

Bigger as in on the heavy side of healthy, large breasts and buttocks as indicators of fertility and wealth, sure. Obesity is not celebrated as desirable anywhere apart from maybe mauritania where women can be force fed to obesity for marriage which is far more about making them huge as an advertisement of their father's and then their husband's wealth and status than actually desiring obese bodies.

Motnight · 12/12/2025 17:48

It's an interesting question. Lots of people here on the WLI threads have reported that when they are still officially overweight people are telling them that they have lost enough weight and to stop.

I've lost over 7 stone in the last 15 months or so. I definitely look miles better than I did before. Healthier and more comfortable.

Bambamhoohoo · 12/12/2025 17:48

I reckon mossy looks amazing with some weight on.

Yes she objectively looked better when she was 25- as everyone does- but I would suggest that she would not look better being her 25 year old weight now.

She's not overweight now is she? And when she was a teenager was she actually underweight or just very slim?

We aren’t talking about obesity. That wasn’t the question.

So many people say they look 'haggard' at healthy weight but truthfully, they're probably just not used to it.

If anything, the jowls that often come from carrying a lot of weight on the face and neck, can look just as bad if not worse.

So I wouldn't worry about it and just aim for a healthy weight for your general health, not your looks.

Bambamhoohoo · 12/12/2025 17:51

NancyMitfordsLeftGlove · 12/12/2025 17:49

Who knows the answer to either, the point is the skinniest can be isn’t always your best look.

some people in this thread seem to be only considering the extremes. My point is- on most people, it doesn’t matter. As I said, 2/3 stone either way, no real impact.

It's because they're used to seeing them overweight.

If they went to a different town where they didn't know anyone, people would probably still think they looked overweight because they can see them objectively if you see what I mean.

Clefable · 12/12/2025 17:53

I think most do generally but it can be the case that someone who has been obese for a long time can end up with a lot of loose skin around face and neck which can make them look facially a bit older, although they generally look better everywhere else. But you can’t put a value on feeling better and being healthier.

5128gap · 12/12/2025 17:54

I know many OW women who are absolutely gorgeous. Weight isn't the definer of good looks. We should consider it only in terms of health really, as when you bring looks into it, you're basically saying that a woman's appearance is the reason she needs to eat healthily, excercise and have a healthy BMI, when the reason for doing those things is to live well and avoid nasty diseases.

I don't understand that at all.

Carrying 3 stone of extra weight definitely has an impact on both looks and eventually health.

Well - Yes, of course!

To be fair there is a margin of around 3 stone between the bottom and top ends of the healthy weight range.

ETA no sorry there isn't, it's more like 2 stone

Being 3 stone under or overweight would have an impact. It’s a lot.

I don’t quite agree because I do think there is a certain look caused by rapid weight loss.

it’s not necessarily about people who were overweight becoming thin looking better, it’s about whether people who are a healthy weight look better anyway.

personally I’d suggest someone who is 1 stone overweight might look better in terms of general appearance than someone who has lost 8 stone rapidly.

Yes and as I said, according to the BMI calculator I could gain an extra stone and still be in the healthy range.

But at 5ft 3" and 10st I'd look and feel awful.

2/3 stone heavier. Not 2/3 stone overweight.

The top or bottom end of healthy is still healthy. We’re presuming the pp means 3 stone above or below the healthy weight category, which definitely would have an impact on both how you look and your health.

That’s not what I said. I said someone putting on or losing 2/3 stone doesn’t necessarily make any impact on the way they look.

The poster I was replying to didn't mention rapid weight loss.

People on the slimming medication often look haggard and unwell. I think healthy eating with plenty of vitamins, exercise and being generally fit and well make a person look the best they can look. Rather than just being slim/medium.

People who use WLi have rapid weight loss and it results in a similar look.

the poster was taking about both WLI and rapid weight loss (7 stone in 15 months)

Happyjoe · 12/12/2025 18:05

Quite often I see overweight people with lovely skin and thick hair, even older women look better for plumper cheeks! Too thin when getting older isn't very forgiving on the face either.

They don't all have rapid weight loss.

For some, the progress is slow and steady.
