Is your family is snobby when it comes to homemade dishes

My in laws are very snobby when it comes to homemade food.

When I say snobby they wouldn’t judge a single mum relying on something pre made for example but when it comes to the stuff they eat they massively favour homemade stuff. I just find it amusing tbh! They all get VERY excited when someone brings over homemade bread and desserts. Wanting to know what recipe/method you chose. All birthday cakes are homemade. I swear a cake from Tesco would sit completely unopened in the fridge.

There is one vegetarian family member and my sister in law is going to make an entire veggie wellington just for him. I suggested just getting something from M&S and she completely baulked at the very idea. Tbf everyone is a good cook.

It definitely stems from MIL. Who grows her own food, makes chutneys etc. They would never dream of shoving in an Indian selection from Waitrose as starters like my family doesx

I just find it fascinating tbh.

Anyone else have family like this? Even croissants are homemade!

"I always cook from scratch because it is tastier"

Ha ha ha! You haven't tasted my cooking.
It's not always less expensive either. Manufacturers can buy ingredients in bulk so they have the economies of scale. There's a YouTuber who compares the prices of home made v shop bought and home made definitely doesn't always win, even without taking the time into account.

I just think there are some things where shop bought is just as nice - spinach and artichoke dip as an example. I have no idea why my ILs would bother!

Because it will be full of emulsifiers.

I pretty much cook everything from scratch. It's better for me and tastes better. When you stop eating ultra processed food your palate changes and you appreciate real food more.

CurlewKate · 12/12/2025 17:00

Just when I thought I’d read all the things that in laws could be criticised for along comes something new!

What’s snobby about giving your food some love and attention?

It's not just that they like home made, it's that they look down on pre-prepared.

Calgator · 12/12/2025 12:09

As if I was trying to think of a person that was most likely time more

I find shop bought better, in general. The quality is more reliable.
Obviously, I can also appreciate a cake someone has made 'with love'.
Where I live, you'd generally buy a cake from a patisserie anyway rather than a supermarket and they're usually better than what a random person can make.

Terrytheweasel · 12/12/2025 17:05

I’ve always made my children’s birthday cakes and do prefer home made food but I wouldn’t judge others for not.

katepilar · 12/12/2025 17:06

It obviously depends on how exactly they talk about the shop bought food. From what I get from your post its you OP who is weirdly judgemental. Home made food is normal.

Franpie · 12/12/2025 17:09

Once you are used to eating homemade non-UP foods, you can taste the difference in shop bought food. It’s like it tastes bland but also of plastic.

No judgement, my mother was a terrible cook so I grew up on the stuff. But I married into a family of home cooks and despite not being able to cook myself, I can’t eat ready-made stuff now. I just starve until DH comes home and cooks us all a meal!

Caniweartheseones · 12/12/2025 17:13

You don’t sound amused. You sound insecure. They prioritise their health and sound like they enjoy socialising over food. Fewer Highly Processed Foods. Maybe they are from a higher economic background so have the time to do this. Maybe another reason you feel insecure about it.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 12/12/2025 17:14

If we are bandying psychoanalytic terms around I'd suggest you and SIL are projecting your own feelings of insecurity and inferiority onto your ILs.

As a whole I prefer homemade foods because I'm a good cook and I can tailor them to my family's taste but it's not snobby, it's just wanting to get maximum pleasure, health and value from my food.

Illbethereinaminute · 12/12/2025 17:16

I'm a bit like your family; if I have people over I make as much as I can from scratch and always over cater! I enjoy cooking and hosting so it's not snobbiness. I'm also trying to reduce some UPFs for myself so I've taken to making my own mayonnaise, pesto and roasting a gammon for sandwiches.

I don't have much else to do these days so I've taken to filling my days off with cooking. If my children were amenable I would make them so much stuff like egg muffins, flapjacks, banana bread because it has to be more filling and cheaper than the shop bought snacks!

Oneofthepotters · 12/12/2025 17:17

Doesn’t sound snobby to me, sounds like us and most of my friends and family. Though I do draw the line at croissants - but DD makes excellent ones. I can’t imagine ever choosing a Tesco cake over a homemade one.

Tryingatleast · 12/12/2025 17:18

They’re just foodies!

Gwenhwyfar · 12/12/2025 17:00

It's not just that they like home made, it's that they look down on pre-prepared.

Well it's not the same standard of food and lifestyle is it?

RenatasHouse · 12/12/2025 17:20

I'd decline any shop bough cake. Yuck.

Minjou · 12/12/2025 11:42

Nothing sounds snobby, or insecure. They just sound like people who enjoy food and cooking and have an interesting in it.

The judgy one here is you.

I agree. 'Snobby' is a silly word is a silly word in this context.

BuildbyNumbere · 12/12/2025 17:26

Hesma · 12/12/2025 16:12

I can’t afford a microwave… it’s pot noodles and cold baked beans for us!

🤣🤣

viques · 12/12/2025 17:43

Exactly this. home made food nearly always tastes better, isn’t full of weird additives, hasn’t been churned out in some factory where you can only hope that they have kept to food standard regulations, and most of all shows someone cares about what they eat and what their guests eat.

If all that is snobby then crown me Queen Snobby. How sad that it is now seen as snobby to be able to cook.

Wrenjay · 12/12/2025 17:44

I do a lovely veggie meal (potatoes, onions, apples layered with very weak marmite and small amount of water, topped with cheese and just put in oven till potatoes are cooked) that goes beautifully with gammon, pork or most other meats. Easy to cater for veggies as I do other stuff that most (meat/fish eating) people like.

DBD1975 · 12/12/2025 17:47

OP I think we might be in the same family!
Seriously my in-laws are a blooming nightmare, especially at Christmas around home cooked food.
Every year they spend hours preparing a meal that always has to be the best meal anyone has ever had (always better than the previous year) and they go on and on about it and everyone has to tell them how wonderful it is a million times over, it is blooming exhausting!
I am veggie so take my own ready meal which goes in the microwave and is always delicious but I get treated like an outcast and a total moron!
Apparently ready meals are the work of the devil!

Chinsupmeloves · 12/12/2025 17:54

Sounds more like they just appreciated good old home cooked food. Foodies can come across as snobby because they are henerally good at cooking so have a lot of opinions and advice!

Crikeyalmighty · 12/12/2025 17:56

EastGrinstead · 12/12/2025 16:31

Some people like good food while others are willing to eat any old crap.

The problem is as well if you like cooking I even find that restaurant meals out seem poor value for money and often not anything that different that I couldn’t do myself - I fully admit I cheat and several nights a week use the simply cook kits and I can guarantee each and every time my H will say - blimey that’s better than most restaurant meals -

All of you people who make ‘everything’ homemade from scratch- where do you get the time?? To buy all the different ingredients, make it all, cook it,clear up etc? Do you have time to do other stuff that contributes to good health as well such as going to the gym?

@RenatasHouse

is she supposed to just renounce her beliefs and eat meat in that situation in your book?
