Would you eat something homemade in the office?

husband has a small business. During the festive period I tend to drop off sweet treats as a way of showing appreciation. I have always bought these treats in the past from bakeries/ supermarkets etc. This year I’m on maternity leave and thought it might be name to bake something myself. I’m a decent baker.

im just concerned that some people can be a bit funny about homemade goods due to hygiene concerns. I am a type A clean freak.

but should I just not bother or will something homemade be seen as a nice gesture?

My office is often like an episode of bake off! Love home baking

Monty34 · 12/12/2025 13:12

Whether I would eat it would depend on who made it. And also to some extent on what I thought were their motives for doing so.

louderthan · 12/12/2025 13:15

I am a huge germophobe but would rather eat a home made cake than a packet of crisps/sweets/biscuits that the rest of the office has been digging into with their unwashed hands. I always reason that cake is fine because it’s been cooked at a high enough temperature to kill any nasties. I am probably wrong but would rather not think about it too much!

Sunloungerhogger · 12/12/2025 13:17

I would - generally find homemade far more tasty.

GasPanic · 12/12/2025 13:18

Homebaked stuff can taste good but it can also taste pretty awful too. It's more variable than shop bought. Shop bought doesn't tend to taste too bad because if it did no one would buy it.

A lot of people seem to think their homemade food is great because everyone takes it and says thanks. What they don't see is them chucking it in the bin later out of site. And of course no one actually tells them the cakes are awful they just smile and say lovely.

I used to work in a place that had cake day. Some of the cakes were great and some a lot less so and were just basically from what I could tell a failed baking experiment, we don't want to throw this out so lets take it to the people at work to consume they won't care.

Applying any sort of generalisation to "shop bought" and "home made" is just that, a generalisation.

starfishmummy · 12/12/2025 13:39

I'm not currently working but yes, I would and have done and also made things that I know were appreciated and eaten.

ladyofshertonabbas · 12/12/2025 13:41

for me, it would depend who made it. You sound ok though, getting clean vibes 😂.

ACynicalDad · 12/12/2025 13:45

Homemade is great, unless you have suspicions around hygiene. First time I was given a home-made slice of cake as a primary teacher, my much more experienced TA swooped in and said that I'd have it in the staff room at play time. Genius... then you made the call in private.

Where do we stand on washing cat bowls in the dishwasher? I always do. The whole point is that it washes things, otherwise all the dishes would just be coated in food residue and human saliva. I don’t see that it is better to wash them in the sink - I wash the stuff that doesn’t go in the dishwasher in the sink, so that would be contaminated with cat germs. Mind you I wash muddy vegetables in there too so there are earth germs in there too. Said cat does not jump up on kitchen surfaces very often and I always wipe down surfaces before baking.

PloddingAlong21 · 13/12/2025 09:22

Home made all the way.

My only hard no is if a kids helped prepare it.

My colleague once brought in some cakes her kids clearly decorated and having met her all 5 of her little kids, all under 7 (well one of them specifically pops to kind - imagine he would have lived outside had his mum let him and never washed his hands) , not a hope I would have eaten those cupcakes.

Ponderingwindow · 13/12/2025 18:02

I prefer homemade, but need an ingredient list because of allergies. Few people think to provide one.

ArtfulOrca · 13/12/2025 18:18

Homemade, yummy! My boss is an excellent cook and my colleague and I devour her offerings eagerly 😋

jajajajajaja · 13/12/2025 18:19

I've always worked in offices where people bring in homeade cakes. I wouldn't overthink it. It's a very normal thing to do! Work can be fucking tedious; a nice homemade treat livens it up.

GameofPhones · 13/12/2025 18:21

"I will say my pearls get clutched very tightly when I see a cat in the kitchen. Unlike dogs they can (and do) climb everywhere."
My cat never tried to get on the counters, but he did poke a pork chop out from under the grill once.

Nrita · 13/12/2025 18:29

Homemade always disappears quicker then shop brought at my place of work

Augustone · 13/12/2025 18:38

I am happy to hoover up anything homemade but not everyone in the office is. I would say 80% eat it and 20% skip it . I am happy with that as there is more for me -cake, biscuits, flapjack, scones…..

So much thought and effort goes into homemade! I think it's a really lovely gesture!

TwistedWonder · 13/12/2025 18:43

Abso bloody lutely - there’s 2 people in our office who bake and often bring cakes in. They all get demolished in seconds. No fussy eaters in our place

BossSaru · 13/12/2025 18:43

I can be a bit cautious about homemade foods made by other people, but I always appreciate the effort and it is easy to politically decline if I would rather not have them.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 13/12/2025 18:45

Never heard of people objecting to homemade cake.

TwistedWonder · 13/12/2025 18:46

Fizbosshoes · 12/12/2025 13:05

Home made stuff is just about always nicer than shop bought.

It didnt occur to me how many people wouldn't eat home made food until I joined MN

Agree I had no idea til I joined MN how many people are so obsessed with other people’s kitchens.

Ive never seen a home baked cake in our office that lasted more than a few minutes

MagicStarrz · 13/12/2025 18:48

No I wouldn't unless I knew you well and had been to your house (and was satisfied it was clean).

EdithStourton · 13/12/2025 18:48

IME most people are delighted to be offered homemade cakes and biscuits.

I used to take things into work and people would noticeably brighten up when the Tupperware came out...

(And if you want a quick but very festive bake, Christmas shortbread is your friend - mincemeat between layers of shortbread dough.)

Tuesdayschild50 · 13/12/2025 18:53

We had a lady who worked as a carer in a smallish company .. she would bring in boxes of homemade samosas .. breads and curries it was so much appreciated such a lovely person x

flatfootedfred · 13/12/2025 18:57

I often wonder what lurgy people think catch from homemade cake?

Like even if someone did lick the spoon or pick their nose or whatever while making it, what is the worse thing that is going to happen?
