Would you eat something homemade in the office?

husband has a small business. During the festive period I tend to drop off sweet treats as a way of showing appreciation. I have always bought these treats in the past from bakeries/ supermarkets etc. This year I’m on maternity leave and thought it might be name to bake something myself. I’m a decent baker.

im just concerned that some people can be a bit funny about homemade goods due to hygiene concerns. I am a type A clean freak.

but should I just not bother or will something homemade be seen as a nice gesture?

I would far rather eat something homemade. I worked in a business where there were a lot of great bakers - I lost weight once I left!!

Mh67 · 11/12/2025 21:20

Not a chance would I eat something homemade. You have no idea if house is clean are ingredients in date.

Waitingfordoggo · 11/12/2025 21:23

I would. I know some people are funny about homemade stuff but I’d expect the majority would tuck in. How nice of you- can you bring some to mine as well please? 😀

I took brownie yule log, gypsy tarts and chocolate chip shortbread into my very corporate office just this week. Everyone loves baked goods! We have a bake off each December which isn’t really a competition at all, just an excuse for lovely things!

BogRollBOGOF · 11/12/2025 21:43

Homemade wins over palm oil every time.

We used to have baking competitions where I worked!

Our bake offs are a regular event! We also held a Mcmillan coffee morning recently & raised £2k ! 80% of the cakes were home made!

Ghht · 11/12/2025 22:13

I love homemade baked goods that people bring in. I’m a type B who can’t bake though. I figure people aren’t being forced to eat it either so why fret?

FelineFeasts · 11/12/2025 22:15

MN is a funny place. Often tons of judgement for people eating UPFs, but then some people would genuinely prefer to eat a shop bought cake than a homemade one? 🤨 Hopefully different people. I also wasn’t sure which way I should vote to say “yes I would eat it!”, so your %s might be off.

soundsys · 11/12/2025 22:36

Yes of course! Love it when people bring things in! And on the (rare!) occasion I've baked it's always got eaten

LetMeGoogleThat · 11/12/2025 12:29

It's always just a matter of time before one pops up 🤣🤣

I often wonder if these people inspect the kitchens when they eat out or, even worse, the kitchens in the local take away, not just the bits we see but the store rooms, freezers etc..

pinkpony88 · 11/12/2025 22:41

I would be considerably thinner if I didn’t! 😂

Ha oh dear I'm definitely outnumbered here. I rarely eat homemade stuff.

One staff member bakes us individual bags of cookies each year I
Say "thankyou so much" and they go straight in the bin.

How rude and wasteful, can't you not simply say No thank you? When I was teaching the wife of an Asian teacher would send in lovely looking Asian sweets but because I know from experience that they're too sweet for me I would say No thanks, and explain that I found them too sweet. Oddly enough he said he wasn't keen on them for the same reason.

I made a delicious wild mushroom risotto last week using dried mushroom sell by date 2019, I survived!

BellaBal · 12/12/2025 08:48

I love home made treats and assume the maker is sensible enough to wash hands and clean equipment!
Do put a list of allergens in though - very very important

My favourites are all the Indian snacks especially samosas , plus mince pies and cake if the person can bake. I always used to take in vegan sausage rolls as the pastry is divine and the herby filling has everyone raving about meat alternatives (I’m not vegan but I believe we should eat far too much meat)

Girasoli · 12/12/2025 08:57

I recently ate a bit of cake a lady handed to me in the street! (Her neighbours were selling old toys etc outside their house, she went out to offer them cake, and as I was standing there buying stuff with DS2 she offered me some cake as well).

Sartre · 12/12/2025 08:59

Yes I would prefer it. A colleague of mine makes us all stollen every year, it’s beautiful.

Veryxonfused · 12/12/2025 09:59

I do feel weird about it but I’m aware this is definitely a me problem, I get it from my mum. I also think I’m in the minority. If it looks clean and presentable and brought in a clean container then I probably would

I know it’s unreasonable!

Fionuala · 12/12/2025 12:51

yes of course whyever not?
more so i would think -if only to show off skills
everyone knows home made is best

mondaytosunday · 12/12/2025 12:53

Absolutely! Much prefer something homemade. If people are funny about it then more for everyone else!

Poodlelove · 12/12/2025 13:02

What a lovely gesture, yes home made ❤️

Jupsie · 12/12/2025 13:05

I would very nice gesture homemade great 👍

Fizbosshoes · 12/12/2025 13:05

Home made stuff is just about always nicer than shop bought.

It didnt occur to me how many people wouldn't eat home made food until I joined MN

confusedwithacrawler · 12/12/2025 13:07

At my work, there was 3 or 4 people who would bring in homemade things and one would bring in the same thing over and over again as it was such a hit. Nobody bat an eyelid about it being homemade and always said it was such a nice gesture. Id say if you're happy to do it, go for it. It would be much appreciated

Im always intrigued at people who assume they are the only person alive who has ever learnt food hygeine in their own kitchen

ThejoyofNC · 11/12/2025 12:27

Not a chance unless I'd been in the house where they were made.

The amount of people on Mumsnet alone who think it's fine to put dog bowls in the dishwasher is enough to make me not even consider it.

Dog bowl in the dishwasher person here. 🙋‍♀️
