Would you eat something homemade in the office?

husband has a small business. During the festive period I tend to drop off sweet treats as a way of showing appreciation. I have always bought these treats in the past from bakeries/ supermarkets etc. This year I’m on maternity leave and thought it might be name to bake something myself. I’m a decent baker.

im just concerned that some people can be a bit funny about homemade goods due to hygiene concerns. I am a type A clean freak.

but should I just not bother or will something homemade be seen as a nice gesture?

Good god yes. Everyone I work with is a better baker than me. I can never understand why the very people who wince at office food made by people they know are the ones who wax lyrical about authentic street food in far flung countries.

SereneGoose · 11/12/2025 18:14

Take a pic of your gleaming kitchen and write out ingredients on a wee card?

Saz12 · 11/12/2025 18:15

I would, unless I thought you were unusually filthy. I wouldn't eat it if you'd been "helped" by a child or had cats (because a former colleague allowed her cats on worktops & never worried about cat sharing cake mix etc!).

BeQuirkyMintScroller · 11/12/2025 18:29

Depends on the owner re cats...

Some owners swear that their cat doesnt go on their counter tops, even while they are asleep/out the house/not looking

Other owners accept that the cat is smart enough not to do it when they're around but probably do in their absence (and so they clean worktops before cooking)

RaininSummer · 11/12/2025 18:36

I worry more about mass produced food and take aways I think than home made stuff.

Zanatdy · 11/12/2025 18:38

Absolutely.

LauraHopkins · 11/12/2025 18:54

100%. Someone in the office made snickerdoodles a couple of weeks ago and we’re all waiting in anticipation for the next batch. I’d happily consume the odd cat or dog hair to eat another one.

yelloworanges1 · 11/12/2025 18:57

I don’t unless I know the person really really well and / or have been to their house. I’m funny like that tho 🤷🏼‍♀️

ParmaVioletTea · 11/12/2025 18:57

Home made cakes and biscuits are not stuffed full of awful UPFs (and pig fat instead of butter & soon). Much nicer!

LeafyLou · 11/12/2025 18:59

Depends on the baked goods (how it is presented) but I would say it wouldn’t bother too many people. If someone refuses they may have a dietary concern.

Wouldn’t bother me but I also don’t eat things homemade in the office. Just a personal choice I was sick from such a food item and don’t want to repeat the same troubles again.

GreenLemonade · 11/12/2025 18:59

I would happily eat home made treats, wouldn't think twice about it.

Koolandorthegang · 11/12/2025 19:00

Yes I would as long as they were well presented. There have been bake sales in my office and people have brought in really sloppy homemade cakes that looked crap and really unappealing

PowerPuffGirdle · 11/12/2025 19:00

Depends.

If they seem generally clean then, yes. Unless they have animals or children in which case no.

The boss' wife dropping in sweet treats to show appreciation for us lowly workers I'd have more issue with 😬

Serpentstooth · 11/12/2025 19:00

Yearsxago someone brought in home made tandoori chicken. Yum. Bit into it, still pink and a bit bloody. Never touched a home made offering since.

icantwaitforsummer · 11/12/2025 19:09

Ha oh dear I'm definitely outnumbered here. I rarely eat homemade stuff.

One staff member bakes us individual bags of cookies each year I
Say "thankyou so much" and they go straight in the bin.

BeLoyalCoralHiker · 11/12/2025 19:13

What’s wrong with putting dog bowls in the dishwasher?!

OP I would always eat home made stuff, unless it was something that has been made / decorated by a child, as they are pretty rank

Dog bowls in dishwasher is disgusting. Ugh.

GrillaMilla · 11/12/2025 19:20

Surely dog bowls don't need to be put in a dishwasher?! They sniff round lamp posts and lick their bottoms, I'm sure they'd be fine with a bowl washed up in a sink. I'd be keeping them separate!

GymBergerac · 11/12/2025 19:20

Without a shadow of a doubt! And I've even come to enjoy Christmas since one of our team started bringing in a particular tiny little sweet treat that his mum makes every year 😊

DappledThings · 11/12/2025 19:26

LeafyLou · 11/12/2025 19:16

Dog bowls in dishwasher is disgusting. Ugh.

I'm yet to be convinced why. It's just a bowl with minute traces of food on it and even more minute dog saliva. All getting washed at a high temperature with detergent.

But then there are also people who claim it's disgusting to wash tea towels with clothes. I think those people are just as barmy.

That's exactly what I was thinking.
I'm going to do rock cakes soon and it's an NHS setting where I volunteer.

NineteenSeventies · 11/12/2025 19:38

Yes. I grew up in a hoarded house with a filthy kitchen so I'm pretty much immune to food poisoning.

JillMW · 11/12/2025 20:07

Tbh I would be a bit offended if I was given a homemade cake or biscuit for a thank you! I bake a lot though, definitely I would prefer from someone I don’t know a box of m and s

If you’re an experienced home baker then I’d not be bothered about the hygiene stuff unless there were hairs sticking out of the cake or something.

I would appreciate an ingredients list because I’m one of those weird people who need to eat low FODMAP (eg no apple) for gut issues. Ditto for allergies & intolerances that others have.

Lovely idea basically though and I’d be grateful you made the effort Flowers

JulieJo · 11/12/2025 20:35

Our office love homemade food, much better than shop bought.
When I bake for work, I always write a list of the ingredients, so anyone with allergies, sensitivities or preferences can eat safely.
