Really? If the 2k a month is invested and assuming an average 5% return, that'll be worth 1.6 million in 30 years time.

Considering that they're also paying down the mortgage and so building equity there, along with the fact that they'll be able to save more as their incomes go up or when their children are independent, I'd say they're doing very well.

It's clear we have different definitions of doing very well.

I could take on an evening role I suppose…

Absolutely. Anything would help!

surreygirly · 10/12/2025 11:38

I don't have any thoughts
I am not interested
I live my own life

FloralHighNotes · 10/12/2025 11:51

Why should we think anything? They sound like a very ordinary family.

333FionaG · 10/12/2025 12:33

Up to their eyeballs in credit card debt.

Menonut · 10/12/2025 12:34

I’ve just learnt not to talk about money. We had friends that flashed about in designer clothes, top of the range cars etc but it was all on credit and they rented their house. If they lost their jobs they’d be left with literally nothing, but to an outsider they looked totally successful.

My first thought was that you need to get a job or a hobby and mind your own business tbh. Oh, and to be happy for other people.

MumAgainAt41 · 10/12/2025 12:45

I don’t understand why you’re asking about people’s thoughts on them?

budgiegirl · 10/12/2025 12:48

TBH I thought…like most of you…we are an average family

To be fair, Mumsnet seems to have a very skewed view of what is 'average'. Depending where you are in the country, you are most likely in the top 10% of earners, and certainly way above the median household income.

Nothing wrong with that at all, and good for you, but it's definitely not 'average'.

But it's not anyone else's business, and I've no idea why your neighbour thinks its her place to comment on what you spend your money on.

Umidontknow · 10/12/2025 12:48

I'm wondering why you care?

Memeyoulater · 10/12/2025 12:52

normal going on for PRE children people

LittleMissyHappyMe · 10/12/2025 13:10

my first thought was ‘I don’t understand what I’m supposed to have an thoughts on’
So I it again & then only thing that stood out was hairdryerS (plural)
why more than 1 hairdryer?

My first thought is you’re a jealous stalker

Delatron · 10/12/2025 13:24

Initially I wouldn’t think anything as it’s none of my business.

As you have given out further info I would silently think two brand new cars are not the best way to spend your money if as a couple you’re not loaded. Cars depreciate so much.

But it’s your money to spend as you wish.

As a couple we are on more and have one quite old car…

You would have been better off not spending lots on new cars and diverting money on to pensions/savings based on your earnings.

mondaytosunday · 10/12/2025 13:28

Other than the fact I don’t know a single soul who has two new cars (whether very wealthy or not) sounds like your bog standard family.
I’ve only twice bought a new car, my very first and my last, bought just before the lock down in 2020 so got 20% cash discount. I’m now trying to think of anyone I know who actually owns two cars even. One family but her car is her son’s old car which was second hand when he bought it!

We pay quite a bit into our pensions 17% between us and employer. All bonuses go into our pensions. We have ample savings leftover .

I’d think they’re enjoying themselves and spending the money they previously spent on childcare on nice things, prob the things they couldn’t afford while they were paying childcare fees.

Could I ask please what your purpose was in submitting your original post? I'm still confused about why. You seem to have an average UK lifestyle.

gemful · 10/12/2025 14:23

Exactly that! I feel we are average enough but my sister, a few friends and now my neighbour are all going on about how we must have won the lotto etc, everytime my sister pops over she finds something to say. It’s tiring!

Every subsequent post contains more personal financial details which presumably the neighbours aren’t privy to 😂
Op will not be told her lifestyle is perfect average.

thecatneuterer · 10/12/2025 14:31

They would only register with me if they had a cat they hadn't neutered - in which case I would despise them.

Delatron · 10/12/2025 14:43

Look it’s your choice and your money but I’d have to be on a serious wedge to buy two brand cars.

So mortgage paid off? Lots of lovely holidays first. Kids in the best schools.

Brand new cars would be the bottom
of my list.
