Titanic the Musical - Strictly

Will start by saying I know nothing about this but have just seen a performance on strictly which I’m presuming is from a musical. Is it me or is it a bit tasteless to make showbiz (and rather camp and comical showbiz at that) from such a big disaster where so many people died? Surprised to see it on strictly.

I am not a big fan of musical theater generally but i found that unbearable. I got as far as seagull head man and then left the room to go on Mumsnet read my book.

Yes. That is the level of humour throughout. It was unbearable.

That person who you refer to offensively and disrespectfully is one of the most talented people to grace the stage. He is a wonderful person with a beautiful soul and an immense amount of talent who has worked exceptionally hard for his success.

Please do not be so insulting to people you know nothing about! 😡😡

Edited

He literally was wearing a seagull on his head!! I thought the whole thing was shit, not just this fella and I’m sure the whole cast worked very hard. But I’m just a woman sat at home with my own, very different, tastes and no power whatsoever over anyone, how does your son/ lover/you cope with critics and auditions?

PinpointWeekend · 08/12/2025 07:36

I am not a huge fan of Layton Williams but I do feel he was wasted in this. At times I thought even he was cringing at how dreadful it was. I recently saw the Producers which was in a different league.

You didn’t even insult his acting or singing!

It’s a career where you have to get used to rejection and have a thick skin. I paid money to see this fiasco, not a lot thankfully as we got cheap last-minute tickets. But if I have paid money for something, then I am allowed to have an opinion on it.

And this was the worst musical I have ever seen. This thread is actually quite therapeutic for me ;-)

Not a musical, but Horrible Histories is full of comedy sketches about historical events. Then there's historical Doctor Who episodes, The Fires of Pompeii being one of my favourites. I don't see the harm in turning these events into a form of entertainment, after all, the audience might learn something! I didn't know anything about Alexander Hamilton until the musical became well known.

What next? caberet Auschwitz?

Cabaret is about the rise of Nazism and does end (at least in some productions) with them going into a concentration camp yes....

Come From Away?? An excellent musical based on events of 9/11

And not a somber, depressing affair

It's such a beautiful musical with lots of warmth and fun

Look at the content of many musicals and comedies - the basis is often not glamorous at all

Hairspray - institutional racism
Bonnie and Clyde - real life gangsters who killed people
Ride the Cyclone - not a real case but horrific roller coaster crash with dead teens
Assassins - real life Assassins
Operation Mincemeat - real life plan during the war

Oh What A Lovely War, first performed in 1963, it was a satire though.

Bumbelinaaa · 08/12/2025 10:41

I get it’s a parody but surely it still crosses the line? Would it be ok to make a West End musical parody of Schindler’s List?

BoxesBoxesEverywhere · 08/12/2025 10:51

Yeah, I love going to musicals and have seen this one advertised.
I've always thought making a musical out of this tragedy was a bit 🙄 though so haven't seen it.

SheinIsShite · 08/12/2025 10:54

It looked awful, not one I'd be rushing to see.

AgentPidge · 08/12/2025 10:58

It was awful. Not because it was based on Titanic, but just because it was obviously supposed to be funny, but didn't work.

HarryVanderspeigle · 08/12/2025 11:11

I didn't enjoy it, but don't think it should be off limits because real people died, or we would never have any musicals. Six is about domestic abuse, murder and death in childbirth, but it was 500 years ago. Does that make it ok now?

It's a political satire with a strong antiwar message. I saw the 60th anniversary tour and the tension between the silliness and the situation is what made it so good.

I think if you can make a good (tragi)comedy about a terrible event, it can be very powerful. Think of Blackadder Goes Forth or Derry Girls.

slowraindrop · 08/12/2025 11:28

I saw Titanique on stage a bit ago. Some of it was funny, but I found the treatment of the character Rose really uncomfortable. She was harangued aggressively by the male actor playing her mum Ruth, she was shown as being naked at one point apart from a pixelated bikini, and there was some “joke” about a butt plug falling out of her.

I’m all up for silly, risqué humour, but I felt there was a real dark edge to it all. I wondered how the actor playing Rose really felt about it.

PinkArt · 08/12/2025 11:47

It's a brilliant and hilarious stage show that sadly didn't translate well into a Strictly medley. It's hard to get the silliness across in that format, the improved moments weren't there, there wasn't the interaction between Celine and the Titanic cast
For all the pearl clutchers, it's a piss take of Titanic, the film and 90s pop culture moment, not of the sinking of Titanic, the tragic event over 100 years ago. That's why the lead plays Celine Dion!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/12/2025 11:52

If the segment that appeared on Strictly was intended to drum up business it really backfired.

It looks awful but I think it is poking at the films than the actual disaster, it looks over the top camp i thought i would enjoy it but its not for me.

Yes this is what I thought and it was probably out of context it really put me off seeing it though.

It's such a shame as I agree, if that's the first I knew of it I don't think I'd be that fussed. Two of by best mates saw it and instantly wanted to go again though, which is why I knew I had to see it. It's fabulous, camp fun but that got lost in the decision to do a medley and focus on the singing and dancing rather than the unhinged action.
After I saw it we found out they were down to about half of the cast that day. Some supporting characters were dropped, all the understudies were on and they'd Eurostarred an understudy in from the French cast with 5 hours notice. He didn't have time to see the stage before curtain up and the second night he was there plated a character he doesn't even understudy in France! Knowing how good it was under those circumstances it must be off the scale at 100%.

That would be my son's friend, the wonderful David Ouch. He vlogged his journey from Paris and it went viral.

Astrid who played Celine in Paris when my son was working on the show there is now playing Celine on the West End. She's great.

He was AMAZING! I only read the whole story after we saw the show and was completely blown away. To do that for a character he does understudy was one thing, but we saw him on his second day playing Cal after he learned the part that day.

Comefromaway · 12/12/2025 11:03

He's a swing now in the West End show which means (for those on this thread who may not know theatre terminology) that he is a standby understudy for multiple roles in the show.
