Titanic the Musical - Strictly

Will start by saying I know nothing about this but have just seen a performance on strictly which I’m presuming is from a musical. Is it me or is it a bit tasteless to make showbiz (and rather camp and comical showbiz at that) from such a big disaster where so many people died? Surprised to see it on strictly.

I was saying exactly the same thing

Cathystiredghost · 07/12/2025 20:22

So weird! Is it a parody of the film? I thought it was ridiculous

It could be. It was very Jack and Rose themed but still, it’s based on a bloody tragedy.

*Titanique

Look at the content of many musicals and comedies - the basis is often not glamorous at all

Hairspray - institutional racism
Bonnie and Clyde - real life gangsters who killed people
Ride the Cyclone - not a real case but horrific roller coaster crash with dead teens
Assassins - real life Assassins
Operation Mincemeat - real life plan during the war

chosenone · 07/12/2025 20:25

I love most musicals but WTAF? This looks batshit!

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 07/12/2025 20:25

Also, yes, I'm pretty sure it's a parody of the FILM

BeautifulSongsofLove · 07/12/2025 20:29

"Titanique is a hilarious, Olivier Award-winning musical parody that reimagines the Titanic story through the lens of a fictionalized Céline Dion"

Titanique the Musical is very funny, has a great cast & songs, read the reviews

MostlyGhostly · 07/12/2025 20:31

I am not a big fan of musical theater generally but i found that unbearable. I got as far as seagull head man and then left the room to go on Mumsnet read my book.

Ok. I guess I’m just wondering if it’s appropriate to make comedy material out of tragedy where many people lost their lives.

Im not disputing the quality of the theatre itself, I know nothing about it but it just seems a bit distasteful at first glance.

DullAndUnconvincing · 07/12/2025 20:33

Oh! I thought it was really good.

Said to DH I wondered if it was the same people who wrote Six but apparently it is from 2017

MrsJamin · 07/12/2025 20:37

I love musicals but that was just dreadful. In very poor taste too. Glad to know more about it so I don't waste my money going to see it!

Soduku1234 · 07/12/2025 20:39

It's hilarious. It's taking the piss out of the film and Celine Dion, not the tragedy of the sinking.

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 07/12/2025 20:40

Better cancel Dad's Army, Allo Allo, MASH...

Comedies about tragedies are as old as time itself tbh

PumpkinScarf · 07/12/2025 20:42

I’ve just been saying the same thing I thought it was absolutely diabolical. I love musicals and enjoyed the film Titanic but will absolutely not be lining up to see that.

Looked like it. Thought it was rubbish.

Newgirls · 07/12/2025 20:51

Titanique is brilliant! A huge hit right in Piccadilly Circus. Perhaps it makes more sense in full but it’s funny and very silly

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 07/12/2025 20:53

It looked awful. And I say that as someone who’s seen a lot of musicals.

At one stage, Layton (the guy who partnered Nikita on Strictly a couple of years ago and was such a ringer he makes Amber look like Anne Widdicombe) was in it. He played an iceberg apparently 🤷🏻‍♀️

ShesTheAlbatross · 07/12/2025 20:55

Blackadder? And many others.

I think that unless the butt of the joke is the victims (I’ve not seen this musical but it sounds like that not the case) then it’s ok.

MotherTuckinGenius · 07/12/2025 21:01

It was just a silly parody of the Titanic film - I’m no expert in musical theatre but even I could see that 😆

StruggleFlourish · 07/12/2025 22:05

Pompeii: the musical

9/11 Twin Towers: the musical

Spanish Flu: the musical

Chernobyl: the musical

Union Carbide - Bhopal, India: the musical

Holocaust: the musical

I agree.

PoohneedsaPimms · 07/12/2025 22:20

I commented to DH after watching it on Strictly that it was like a French & Saunders sketch? Was it meant to be funny? Also found it an odd subject choice for a musical.

Yes, it's a parody designed to be funny

Georgiepud · 07/12/2025 23:19

I wasn't impressed. I guess it's meant to be funny, but it fell short.

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 07/12/2025 23:20

It’s a parody of the film, not the titanic tragedy itself.
