Titanic the Musical - Strictly

moanymel6 · 07/12/2025 20:19

Will start by saying I know nothing about this but have just seen a performance on strictly which I’m presuming is from a musical. Is it me or is it a bit tasteless to make showbiz (and rather camp and comical showbiz at that) from such a big disaster where so many people died? Surprised to see it on strictly.

I love musicals but this didn’t sell itself to me , looks awful

Pompeii: the musical

9/11 Twin Towers: the musical

Spanish Flu: the musical

Chernobyl: the musical

Union Carbide - Bhopal, India: the musical

Holocaust: the musical

🎶
No?
I agree.

Evita - populist friend-of-fascism dictatorship that bled a country dry
Miss Saigon - Vietnam war, unplanned pregnancy, the abandonment of mixed race children through shame
Les Miserables - title speaks for itself but persecution by corrupt police, illegitimacy and child abuse all feature

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/12/2025 23:54

It did seem very odd!

RexBabetteTim · 07/12/2025 23:55

We were all open mouthed at how awful it was. Realised it was a parody, but still awful. Just didn’t make us smile or laugh, it was just ridiculous and dumb.

This could 100% be an Edinburgh fringe venue lineup from 2008...

The Sound Of Music and the rise of the Nazis...

Titanique is fantastic. It is more a piss take of Celine Dion than anything else

My 70 year old mum wanted to see it and she absolutely loved it. It is as camp as Christmas which is what makes it fabulous

Yes no one has ever made any funny material out of Pompeii, Spanish Flu or WW2...

The Producers...?

I mean, technically the point of The Producers is them trying to make the most bad taste musical so making it about Hitler being a good guy

But then everyone thinks it's a parody and loves it

Which does kind of make the point that parody works

SnowFrogJelly · 08/12/2025 00:57

It was awful

I am not a big fan of musical theater generally but i found that unbearable. I got as far as seagull head man and then left the room to go on Mumsnet read my book.

That person who you refer to offensively and disrespectfully is one of the most talented people to grace the stage. He is a wonderful person with a beautiful soul and an immense amount of talent who has worked exceptionally hard for his success.

Please do not be so insulting to people you know nothing about! 😡😡

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 08/12/2025 03:40

I love musical theatre and appreciate Titanique is a parody of the film, Jack / Rose and Celine Dion, but I get an awful sick feeling whenever I've watched it. Musicals like Les Mis and comedies like Blackadder, shine a light on unfair suffering and poor choices by those in power whereas I feel Titanique detached itself from the reality of what actually happened in the actual disaster. I've also seen Titanic the musical and that didn't give me the same bad feeling, despite it still being a musical form of the disaster.

ThePoshUns · 08/12/2025 03:51

If the five minutes on SCD is the best of the show, I’ll be giving it a wide berth. It was awful.

Crikey, over reacting much?

MrsJamin · 08/12/2025 06:45

If it is a good musical then whoever made the medley should be fired! Did they not consider how it would sound to someone who had never heard it before?

That’s another thing Celine Dion has stiff personal syndrome it seems wrong to mock her performance style.

Celine Dion is well known for taking the piss out of herself and will have been consulted about the show. She has a good sense of humour and didn't like Titanic's song and nearly didn't sing it for the film because she hated it. So she'll enjoy the piss take.

Comefromaway · 08/12/2025 07:20

It’s Titanique.

I’ve not seen the show but my son worked on the Paris production. One of his friends performed last night. It’s a parody and apparently very, very funny. It’s very popular with MT audiences, very rooted in gay culture.

an unusual choice for family viewing but lots of people love the show.

PinpointWeekend · 08/12/2025 07:24

If anybody is tempted to see this, please don’t. It is just not remotely funny. It is just full of crude innuendos and embarrassing attempts at jokes. I am no prude at all but endless penis jokes just become very very boring. I did give it a chance, the rest of my group walked out as it was so awful. I have lived in London for decades and seen many musicals, but this was the worst by some distance!

*and a couple of gay friends hated it even more than me, despite perhaps being a target audience.

Celine dion has supported this show. God knows why.
