AIBU in thinking that King Charles' passing will devastate Britain?

If you remember back when Queen Elizabeth II died, how upset most British people were and how it caused some social insecurity as many British people saw her as a sense of strength and a rock due to her continuity and longevity, but with her gone, they weren't sure how Britain would fare. Hence, the large crowds of mourners and a lot of upset.

King Charles III - though not as admired as Queen Elizabeth was - also has longevity and a sense of continuity in a different way: not as monarch since he's only been in the role for three years, but as a royal figure, i.e. he has been in the spotlight since the 1940s and conducting royal duties since the 1960s. When he dies, will Britain finally feel as though the older generation of royals - who for so long have provided reassurance and comfort to the British people - have gone?

Will this lead to a lot of soul-searching about where next Britain must go and perhaps cause social tensions due to the insecurity of identity? Who will the British look to to guide the nation from then on? Who will be their new rock?

Lol no.

HopSpringsEternal · 07/12/2025 10:30

I for one would give very little of a fuck. I would think, as I do about anyone Ive never met but heard of that has died "oh that's sad". Then move on with my day.

BitOutOfPractice · 07/12/2025 10:31

No. HTH.

usedtobeaylis · 07/12/2025 10:31

Few people in Scotland care.

SilverPink · 07/12/2025 10:31

This has to be a joke post? Reassurance and comfort? Soul searching? To me, the royal family are neither here nor there 🤷🏻‍♀️ As a British person, they don’t form part of my identity. I always think the foreign tourists like them more than half the UK population does.

sprigatito · 07/12/2025 10:31

Eh? I couldn’t give two tugs of a dead dog’s cock about any of them. Inbred parasitical dimwits.

Egglio · 07/12/2025 10:32

I don't remember being comforted and reassured by any royals, so it won't make one jot of difference to me.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 07/12/2025 10:32

I’m here for the republic.

Wildflowers78 · 07/12/2025 10:32

No. There was a significant generational bond with Queen Elizabeth - none of that with Prince Charles as far as I can see. The monarchy became far less relevant when she passed. Not a fan of the royals in general but I really don’t see what’s to like about him and Camilla in particular. Finding ‘resilience and comfort’ in that pair is laughable 🤣 Charles hasn’t worked a day in his life.

Abracadabrador · 07/12/2025 10:32

Who considers that man their 'rock'? Confused

stclementine · 07/12/2025 10:32

Most people weren’t upset at all, it was the media telling us we were all upset. Same as when this one goes, there’ll be wall to wall media induced mourning which won’t affect or reflect what most of us are doing or thinking. The monarchy isn’t really as relevant to our day to day lives as they like to think.

Kamek · 07/12/2025 10:32

I want them.all gone, permanently

4forksache · 07/12/2025 10:33

i think you are overthinking the importance of the monarchy to the majority of the population.
People might be temporarily a bit sad, as they were with the Queen, as it’s part of our tradition and what we’ve known. Doesn’t take long for the majority to get over it, move on and adjust to the new normal.

12345onceIcaughta · 07/12/2025 10:33

😆😆😆 most people won’t care.
The royal family don’t guide the nation, thank god!

MasterBeth · 07/12/2025 10:34

Nope.

Move on.

Nothing to see here.

Fluffyholeysocks · 07/12/2025 10:34

No, i don't think so. Charles hasn't had the long reign QE2 had. I think the monarchy will change and modernise under William.

HeadyLamarr · 07/12/2025 10:34

As if.

FenceBooksCycle · 07/12/2025 10:34

Nah. Chazzer is mostly seen as a stopgap who is keeping the throne warm so that William can focus more on being a dad while his kids are young. When he shuffles off, the main public emotions will be brief respect and acknowledgement that he did a decent job, but mainly looking forward with some hope and joy to the reign of William V.

Rainbowcat77 · 07/12/2025 10:34

Just no…as with the Queen’s death, crowds of people will gather because it’s an interesting historical occasion. Some people will cry and put on a show but unless they actually knew him personally I have little sympathy for that type of carry on, it’s usually seen in dramatic attention seekers in my experience 🤷🏽‍♀️
Most people will think, oh that’s sad, his family and friends must be upset, then carry on with their lives.
The monarchy don’t hold any actual power do they? They’re just very expensive PR figures basically.

Freedomishereandnow · 07/12/2025 10:34

Privet! Let me assure you that no one in the UK gives Charles a second thought and the only devastation his death will cause will be financial due to the millions his funeral will cost.

This poster loves writing these posts about the royals with Mills & Boon type language.

The Royal Family does not guide the nation and I certainly don’t see Charles or any member of the family as my rock!

Holluschickie · 07/12/2025 10:35

I don't want him to die- I don't want anyone to die- but the royals make zero difference to my life. I would sooner take advice from my mum than those parasites. They give me no security at all.

CatPawsAreCute · 07/12/2025 10:35

I don't think so. I think quite a lot of the weight of "what next?" is on William's shoulders already.

Charles is living with cancer, he could be gone in five months or five years, but surely no one is expecting his reign to last very long, so it's not like his death will be a surprise.

More and more people are questioning the existence of a monarchy, especially younger people, so I very much doubt Charles dying will have anything like the impact of QE2's. She was monarch for all or most of pretty much everyone's lives. Totally different.
