AIBU in thinking that King Charles' passing will devastate Britain?

If you remember back when Queen Elizabeth II died, how upset most British people were and how it caused some social insecurity as many British people saw her as a sense of strength and a rock due to her continuity and longevity, but with her gone, they weren't sure how Britain would fare. Hence, the large crowds of mourners and a lot of upset.

King Charles III - though not as admired as Queen Elizabeth was - also has longevity and a sense of continuity in a different way: not as monarch since he's only been in the role for three years, but as a royal figure, i.e. he has been in the spotlight since the 1940s and conducting royal duties since the 1960s. When he dies, will Britain finally feel as though the older generation of royals - who for so long have provided reassurance and comfort to the British people - have gone?

Will this lead to a lot of soul-searching about where next Britain must go and perhaps cause social tensions due to the insecurity of identity? Who will the British look to to guide the nation from then on? Who will be their new rock?

On the plus side, we will get a day off

soocool · 07/12/2025 10:42

I'd be more concerned about Lazy Arse W becoming the monarch, and closing ranks and refusing to be financially transparent about the Sovereign Grant and his taxes/assets and so on and so forth. He doesn't inspire me one bit and all this talk about him reforming and slimming down the monarchy sounds very hollow to me.

But we shall see. As for KC3s passing, well I don't know him, never met him, he's not a relative or close friend, so I shall leave the mourning to those people and other sycophantic hangers on. I will however, have no choice but to cough up via my taxes for another week of sombre expensive funereal pageantry.

I’m here for the republic.

I second that! Or at least for a monarchy so slimmed down it’s bordering on anorexic.

I can’t abide all of this “nation’s rock” business either! it’s a narrative largely constructed by tabloid newspapers.

I think the people should have been consulted after QE2’s reign and I think the people should be consulted after Charles has gone.

SheinIsShite · 07/12/2025 10:42

The Queen's passing did not cause "social insecurity". For that reason you are being unreasonable.

DisforDarkChocolate · 07/12/2025 10:42

I'm not even sure Camilla will be devastated.

Me, I'll just be wondering if any of modernising Charles promised for 40 years actually happened and if Wills will manage any. I think not, they are all an expensive pointless waste of my money.

Cheguevarahamster · 07/12/2025 10:42

Yabu. I couldn't a shiny f#ck. The monarchy are a ridiculous institution and should be abolished.

GildedPaulieWalnuts · 07/12/2025 10:43

Abracadabrador · 07/12/2025 10:32

Who considers that man their 'rock'? Confused

Well quite. He’s the berk with an even berkier son getting paid for saying shite in the US simply because of an accident of birth.

I imagine William and Catherine will be coronated and the whole juggernaut of monarchy will continue. Hopefully it can’t get any worse after the ‘Spare’ debacles, assuming William sorts out the whole grubby House of York (yes, I mean the avaricious near-middle-aged daughters), and the weird gobshite-Harry situation.

DisforDarkChocolate · 07/12/2025 10:43

Lemonysnickety · 07/12/2025 10:41

I think William and Catherine are way more popular than Charles.

We need a laugh emoji!!

Fecking lazy feckers!

Doseofreality · 07/12/2025 10:44

I couldn’t give less of a fuck if I tried. However, I will be seething at the waste of tax payer’s money on another ridiculously over the top Funeral week.

TheChosenTwo · 07/12/2025 10:44

Freedomishereandnow · 07/12/2025 10:34

Privet! Let me assure you that no one in the UK gives Charles a second thought and the only devastation his death will cause will be financial due to the millions his funeral will cost.

Just checking though, there will be a bank holiday for the funeral??

Op I don’t give a shiny shit about the royal family, I’d banish the monarchy entirely so irrelevant they are to me.

Wasn’t upset when the queen died, will be just as ambivalent when he does.

Greggsit · 07/12/2025 10:44

Who will the British look to to guide the nation from then on? Who will be their new rock?

What on earth makes you think that a single individual looks to the monarch for guidance now? What a load of nonsense.

SumUp · 07/12/2025 10:44

We need to be a republic and use former crown assets to create a wealth fund for the people, much as Norway has.

Nah. Chazzer is mostly seen as a stopgap who is keeping the throne warm so that William can focus more on being a dad while his kids are young. When he shuffles off, the main public emotions will be brief respect and acknowledgement that he did a decent job, but mainly looking forward with some hope and joy to the reign of William V.

Talk to me about the hope and joy I am to expect?

BeMintFatball · 07/12/2025 10:45

I think most people will look forward to the next coronation party but not really mourn Charles. I don’t think William will do a good job as I don’t think it’s a job he wants. I wouldn’t want it either.

I will be sad when Princess Anne dies. Best Queen we will never have.

DisforDarkChocolate · 07/12/2025 10:45

CandyCaneKisses · 07/12/2025 10:35

Sadly not. I think people will be more excited to get William on the throne.

Honestly, he's so lazy he'll probably ask for a recliner.

Cheese55 · 07/12/2025 10:45

I think OP is joking 😳. No one is real life thinks like this about the RF. At all.

LidlAmaretto · 07/12/2025 10:46

Ponoka7 · 07/12/2025 10:36

I felt sorry for him because he was ahead of his time re environmental issues. He's open to other religions etc. However I can't get passed him defending and helping hide pedophiles. He made Savile untouchable and I wonder how much he knew considering he tried to help and actually gave sanctuary to, Peter Ball former Bishop. I don't think William can keep dodging questions by being interviewed by Americans. The issue of wealth, land hoarding and tax has to be eventually addressed. He was laughing along with Andrew until the public heckling started.

Edited

I agree with this. There is no proof that William will change anything in relation to the RF's transparency in relation to their finances or to how much they cost etc. All the changes he had spoken about are to his own workload, which he wants to maintain at a very low level. The same was said of Charles, that he wants to slim down the Monarchy. Its the same old story. Wait for the next one. It will all change. And there was no 'social unrest' when the 96 year old Queen died!

Tiredofwhataboutery · 07/12/2025 10:46

I don’t think so. I was genuinely saddened by the death of the queen. It felt the end of an era, she’d been the monarch for my entire life. I’d not have been upset if that was the end of the monarchy though. Pretty ambivalent about the rest.

whymadam · 07/12/2025 10:46

No. An old man riding around in a golden carriage wearing a diamond hat - it's beyond ridiculous.

FenceBooksCycle · 07/12/2025 10:47

CurlewKate · 07/12/2025 10:45

Talk to me about the hope and joy I am to expect?

If you aren't a royalist, then it would be hope that the rumors that he plans to massively cut down on the civil list and reduce the parasitism from the wider royal family might be true?

FenceBooksCycle · 07/12/2025 10:34

Ha ha no we’re not. It’s just replacing one parasite with another 😂

MidnightPatrol · 07/12/2025 10:47

No, I don’t think he’s widely liked really. Not like the Queen.

Plus she was such a constant over a long period and Charles’s reign will be short in comparison.

DonicaLewinsky · 07/12/2025 10:48

Pretty sure any social insecurity in autumn 2022 was to do with a certain someone crashing the pound...

But giving you the benefit of the doubt that this is at all serious, if Charles dies quite soon then I think a lot of the people who actually care will prefer a younger and more photogenic monarch, with youngish kids. And if he does live to a ripe old age like his parents, that makes it even less likely that the reaction can be predicted even in a less batshit way than you managed here

Comtesse · 07/12/2025 10:48

YABVVVU and a bit delusional.
