AIBU in thinking that King Charles' passing will devastate Britain?

If you remember back when Queen Elizabeth II died, how upset most British people were and how it caused some social insecurity as many British people saw her as a sense of strength and a rock due to her continuity and longevity, but with her gone, they weren't sure how Britain would fare. Hence, the large crowds of mourners and a lot of upset.

King Charles III - though not as admired as Queen Elizabeth was - also has longevity and a sense of continuity in a different way: not as monarch since he's only been in the role for three years, but as a royal figure, i.e. he has been in the spotlight since the 1940s and conducting royal duties since the 1960s. When he dies, will Britain finally feel as though the older generation of royals - who for so long have provided reassurance and comfort to the British people - have gone?

Will this lead to a lot of soul-searching about where next Britain must go and perhaps cause social tensions due to the insecurity of identity? Who will the British look to to guide the nation from then on? Who will be their new rock?

Nope, wasn't bothered then, won't be bothered by Charles.

Mydogisagentleman · 07/12/2025 10:57

Couldn't give a shiny shit about any of them - although I wish I had met the expression about tugging on a dead dog's dick before.
Parasitic bunch of inbred.
Down with the crown

I like the Royal Family. I'll feel sad, I'll mourn with the nation. But will be excited to see William as King.

Less work, fewer people, no reduction in houses or financial and other privileges is my guess, going by what he has done as PoW. Hes gone backwards on what his father did- which was declare his taxes- which can only mean he pays less. He does a minimal amout of 'royal duties- mostly sporting events and glamorous dinners and quite a lot of work to enrich himself via the Duchy of Cornwall. Im not sure why people expect him to be so amazing. Its all PR puff. The whole ' Oh William and Kate cant stand to be near Andrew' yet hes moving onto the Sandringham Estate where one of their other houses is!

I agree. I actually have more respect for Charles than I have for William.

Sadly not. I think people will be more excited to get William on the throne.

This. I have nothing against KC and certainly don't wish him ill, but I do think William will be a very strong and popular King.

No. It'll be a bookmark, but I feel the country is already ready for William and Kate to take the throne.

This part of the country isn't thankyou very much.

The OP hasn’t returned, so I think it’s a wind up, ( nobody is that naive)

Exactly this. I think William will be an outstanding monarch and Kate will be a wonderful support to him.

All I know is that our joint nations simply cannot afford another:

£162 million spent on a funeral

plus

£72 million spent on another Coronation.

Not while our elderly parents are being treated in hospital corridors. We need to get our priorities straight.

This.
I don't care other than thinking that it's sad for his family.
The one thing I didn't mind when it was the Queens funeral was working in the shop, it was closed, getting loads of stuff done in 2 hours and then going home and getting paid for 7 hours.
I'm not a subscriber to performative grieving. Bad enough when it's someone that people actually know, cringeworthy when they don't.

So does this mean he does less and can have the privacy they all seem to crave Apart from the unmentionable one!

I think people will be excited to see William as King.

William has no personality or Kate they remind me of sea squirts. They will do and say anything to keep the pound notes coming.

ComedyGuns · 07/12/2025 11:01

Are you in your late 80s?

I won't. Idle parasite. He'll do less work than the generations before him. I respect Princess Anne's work ethic and that's it. William seems only interested in the privilege without doing anything in return.

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 07/12/2025 11:02

A royal family in an equal society makes no logical sense.

Agree. So do I actually. I quite like Charles but I think he was an absent father and both William and Harry are the same- spoilt, lazy and entitled. One just has better PR and all the cash.

LBFseBrom · 07/12/2025 11:05

King Charles is a year older than me. I don't think about him popping his clogs at the moment. His cancer seems to be well under control, his age went in his favour for that. I can see him lasting another ten years if he takes care of himself. Why think about it in advance? Nobody much thought of the late queen's demise until she was past 90 and she did pretty well almost up to the last, as did her husband.

When it happens there will be much pageantry for a while, then William will be king and back to business as usual. The royals don't really affect us.

ilovesooty · 07/12/2025 10:58

Me too! Charles actually has something resembling a work ethic, his sister too.

Like someone has said we only see William (and Catherine) when they're doing stuff they enjoy. They won't do the dull things because 'family life'.

William's natural role is a regional manager for some corporation or other, with his wife doing the necessary home stuff and hosting dinner parties. Whereas I can imagine Charles or Anne as CEOs.

mbosnz · 07/12/2025 11:05

Why would the passing of one pale, male and stale devastate the country? Increasingly, they are irrelevant, and showing themselves to be the overprivileged waste of time, space and money that they are.

ComedyGuns · 07/12/2025 11:05

My mum always said that they gave stability to this country and stopped it descending into a fascist state, which I thought was a really good point.

However, Prince William has grown up with social media and cancel culture and seems very aware that they are now a public relations brand, which is the opposite of stable.

pictoosh · 07/12/2025 11:05

Nah not really. There are those who don't care about the monarchy...and those who do will be delighted to have Wills and Kate at the helm.

Politicians247UnderwearExtinguishingService · 07/12/2025 11:06

Slightyamusedandsilly · 07/12/2025 10:38

Nope. He's weak and irrelevant. The next one will be angry / stroppy and irrelevant.

QE was sensible and respected. Neither of the blokes following her are those things.

I don't agree that QE was respected for who she truly was.

She exploited the fact that she had been on the throne for so long - and thus of course came to the throne when she was young - and mass misogyny seems to make people look more kindly and patronisingly on a queen than they tend to for a king.

People saw her as a non-threatening little old 'nation's grandma' rather than as a powerful leader - which she took advantage of, even though she - like all British monarchs - actually had immense power (greatly downplayed for the public) and perpetrated and allowed many outrageous things in all of her decades.
