AIBU in thinking that King Charles' passing will devastate Britain?

If you remember back when Queen Elizabeth II died, how upset most British people were and how it caused some social insecurity as many British people saw her as a sense of strength and a rock due to her continuity and longevity, but with her gone, they weren't sure how Britain would fare. Hence, the large crowds of mourners and a lot of upset.

King Charles III - though not as admired as Queen Elizabeth was - also has longevity and a sense of continuity in a different way: not as monarch since he's only been in the role for three years, but as a royal figure, i.e. he has been in the spotlight since the 1940s and conducting royal duties since the 1960s. When he dies, will Britain finally feel as though the older generation of royals - who for so long have provided reassurance and comfort to the British people - have gone?

Will this lead to a lot of soul-searching about where next Britain must go and perhaps cause social tensions due to the insecurity of identity? Who will the British look to to guide the nation from then on? Who will be their new rock?

I think people will be excited to see William as King.

I think William and Catherine are way more popular than Charles.

So they might be. I don't think William is any less of a parasite than the rest of them. The sooner we're rid of the monarchy the better.

As for the death of Charles, I respect the fact that his family will grieve on a personal level but the only impact it will have on most of the public is the cost of the funeral and the resultant coronation.

Cheese55 · 07/12/2025 10:49

When people talk about Will 'modernising ' the RF. What does that mean. Less of them? How will that work?

Heyhelga · 07/12/2025 10:50

No. It'll be a bookmark, but I feel the country is already ready for William and Kate to take the throne.

Goditsmemargaret · 07/12/2025 10:50

This has given me a good laugh thanks.

GumFossil · 07/12/2025 10:51

I wouldn’t care. I don’t know anyone that would.

I also don’t remember ’most people’ being upset when the old queen died.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 07/12/2025 10:52

I mourn having a "Royal Family", I want to be a citizen of a Republic, not a subject.

Laiste · 07/12/2025 10:52

Not me. I have very little respect for him, and can't stand bloody ''queen'' Camila 🙄 What a joke she is!

Looking forward to seeing William and Kate give it a go. They both seem quite serious dedicated people.

We need a laugh emoji!!

Fecking lazy feckers!

They are more popular, I think they're the most popular. They have amazing PR obviously, considering they don't do much.

William's reforms will be even more secrecy (he's less open about finances than his father), and even less of being seen in public.

Elizabeth, Charles and Anne at least appreciate that they have to be seen out and about doing stuff, even the Gloucesters have been pushed into the limelight more recently.

Meanwhile W&C want an ordinary family life (I don't blame them) but with the riches and wealth of being royalty.

Not sure how their prioritisation will work long term, after all Louis is only 7, so another eleven years till he's an adult. And Charles will have died before then, so they can hardly hide behind family life when they're the king and queen!

Most people weren’t upset at all, it was the media telling us we were all upset. Same as when this one goes, there’ll be wall to wall media induced mourning which won’t affect or reflect what most of us are doing or thinking. The monarchy isn’t really as relevant to our day to day lives as they like to think.

All I know is that our joint nations simply cannot afford another:

£162 million spent on a funeral

plus

£72 million spent on another Coronation.

Not while our elderly parents are being treated in hospital corridors. We need to get our priorities straight.

I think people will be excited to see William as King.

Why?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/12/2025 10:54

I like Charles - for a start he was concerned for the environment long before it became ‘fashionable’.. But I won’t ‘miss’ him in the way I felt about the Queen, who had been there for as long as I could remember - for well over 50 years.
It truly was the end of an era.

StrictlySequinsandStiIettos · 07/12/2025 10:54

Nope. No figs to give.
Will feel for Camilla. I like her.
Although I read somewhere they live separately part of the time, anyway? Could be bollocks.

Not keen on William at all.
Not looking forward to his dad's funeral and inevitable Harry-watching and Meghan-vitriol though. Vultures will bloody love Charlie boy pegging it, just to go on about prodigal son hypocrite attending funeral, grandchildren not knowing him etc etc sadly, they'll have a great time.

AgnesX · 07/12/2025 10:54

I wasn't upset when QE2 died, a little sad in that she was queen for my entire life and it was the end of that particular era.

Charles has never featured in my consciousness in the same way so I'll probably not feel any sense of loss whatsoever.

I do feel his death will be the beginning of a huge change in the Royal hierarchy and probably no bad thing.

sprigatito · 07/12/2025 10:31

Eh? I couldn’t give two tugs of a dead dog’s cock about any of them. Inbred parasitical dimwits.

Pretty much this.

I know they are important from a political POV but I really wish we could be done with them all now. Charles made it clear he was dreading being king and I imagine William feels pretty much the same way and none of them are people I can respect.

It's an ancient anachronism that should be ended with.

As for me feeling sad when he dies. I won't give it a second thought. His behaviour has been appalling.

snowbear22 · 07/12/2025 10:55

No, he has not been in the job long enough, he's more known for being an enviromental evangelist
-(though now we find out that the Royals own the coastal land under the sea and are leasing it to the public purse at very high cost to put the coastal windfarms).

Needingtoanewjob · 07/12/2025 10:55

He too shall pass.

In 1977 everyone celebrated the queen's silver jubilee. It was lovely. We celebrated in 2012 and that was fabulous.
Her passing filled many with sadness.

Calliopespa · 07/12/2025 10:55

I'm assuming this was really a goady thread by a Republican designed to elicit strong reactions.

So I am afraid I am going to disappoint and say, actually yes, it will sadden me.

I liked the Queen for her sense of duty and a certain resilience, but I actually think Charles is a very interesting and extremely intelligent man. I am interested in some of his interests and share a lot of his views around certain things he has directed his efforts into. His attitudes are usually underpinned by quite thoughtful analysis.

I think a longer reign than is likely might actually have been put to good use by Charles.

I think he has far more substance than many of our politicians.

I'll be excited to see if he does any work!

GarlicBreadStan · 07/12/2025 10:55

Not me or any people I know.
What exactly is exciting about it?

MirrorMirror1247 · 07/12/2025 10:55

Like the late Queen was, he's someone I've been aware of my whole life, and I think he seems like a nice man. I think it will be sad when he dies, but I doubt that there will be social insecurity. After the funeral, I think we'll just get on with having a new King and Queen.

Less work, fewer people, no reduction in houses or financial and other privileges is my guess, going by what he has done as PoW. Hes gone backwards on what his father did- which was declare his taxes- which can only mean he pays less. He does a minimal amout of 'royal duties- mostly sporting events and glamorous dinners and quite a lot of work to enrich himself via the Duchy of Cornwall. Im not sure why people expect him to be so amazing. Its all PR puff. The whole ' Oh William and Kate cant stand to be near Andrew' yet hes moving onto the Sandringham Estate where one of their other houses is!

iSage · 07/12/2025 10:56

Just come in after shopping - I read that and thought for a moment he'd died suddenly Shock

Absolute bullshit. Is this pasted from AI? Why?
