Fell over at work Christmas party

Today is the morning after of a very boozy work Christmas party and I need a good talking to. The day was filled with wine and Prosecco and not much food! I’ve recently started a new team and I’m a few years away from qualifying as a solicitor. I’m 37 and other women in the team are the same age and have children. I’ve sadly had 5 miscarriages - I’ve been asked several if I have kids and why not and it was on my mind that I would be asked last night so probably numbing it with alcohol. The whole team were also really drunk and I remember a vague conversation about children and one the girls pulling me to one side and saying sorry & that she is also struggling to conceive. I also lost my balance on a high stool, slipped and took a solicitor down with me. He’s been really kind and told me to forget about it and don’t worry but I can’t stop panicking. My manager had went home by this point so didn’t see but I am so worried about my unprofessional drunken behaviour. Desperately fighting the urge to text every individual on the team with an apology. Am I wasting my energy on this? I’m hoping people won’t give it an extra thought. Dreading work on Monday….

Come Monday you apologise to the one you dragged down to the floor. You play it by ear and act accordingly if your manager says anything about complaints. And you are not at uni, getting this drunk and embarrassing yourself should not be a thing you do at this age.

Wow.

Scotland’s a fairly big place. There certainly are rough streets where they shout things like that at each other.

Fuck me, the snobbery on here!

HarlanPepper · 07/12/2025 06:03

Wow. This post brought all the arseholes to the yard.

Gosh yes. That was the first thing that stood out to me. Clients will certainly notice that grammar.

Not if it’s the norm. This is how we always say it - no one would say anything.

No way did a solicitor write "had went"

Yes they would. It’s very common in Scotland and not grammatically wrong

This is the second thread I’ve read tonight where people can’t get their heads round a common Scottish turn of phrase.

I’m sure when OP is speaking in legalese she wouldn’t use the term!

It would be fine if she did as everyone in Scotland says this and it’s not remarkable at all.

Goditsmemargaret · 07/12/2025 08:14

You're fine honestly. You've got The Fear. Alcohol is a bastard for it. It was a drunken affair, you were drunk. It's not criminal behaviour.

If you're friendly with any of them message saying "hi how are you today? I feel horrendous, drank way too much. I hope I haven't pissed anyone off - sorry if I did".

But there's no need to.

Honestly though at 47 I don't drink at all anymore and it really makes me happy that I never have go feel like this again.

Order some fast food, fizzy drinks, go for a walk then settle on the couch for TV. Message a friend who always makes you laugh.

That sounds quite tame.

@nomas it was tame for me. Thankfully my husband had arrived to collect me before I could get any further Cosmopolitans down. That particular party ended up with an after party back in the office which did not end well…..

I sometimes watch those BBC documentaries of court cases (can’t think of the name) and there’s a very posh Scottish lawyer (wears glasses) and I was trying to picture him saying it and couldn’t decide if he would or not Grin

He wouldn’t bat an eyelid as it’s not seen as incorrect

SheSaidHummingbird · 07/12/2025 15:25

It's absolutely grammatically incorrect. Language that has become accepted into regional dialect does not change that.

Onslow1985 · 08/12/2025 14:57

Thanks for all of the messages regarding my grammatical error. Duly noted and if anyone is interested I wouldn’t use this language in a work setting, I was simply typing into a small box on my phone severely hungover at the time! Me being me I haven’t been able to laugh it off, yes everyone else was drunk but seemed to have witnessed the incident and now just feel like I’m a laughing stock (when everyone is probably not giving it a second thought) oh and I obviously let everyone know I’m mortified and been anxious all weekend.

OK. So what are you going to do to address the problem that you so evidently have with drinking, @Onslow1985? Or is this thread just until the next time?

It isn’t no. You’re right and previous posters too. I suppose I just wanted some reassurance I wasn’t a hideous human being

Of course you’re not a hideous human being! Flowers

MyAmusedPearlSquid · 08/12/2025 15:39

Your miscarriages have nothing to do with this you was drunk fell off a stool took a colleague down with you and yes if I was you I would be bloody embarrassed as hell

Maybe not but it’s definitely something I battle with on a daily basis so drinking too much on a work night out isn’t the answer.

Of course you’re not. Having an addiction doesn’t make someone bad.
