To not be surprised that Poundland is failing. (Another 14 stores to close.)

And they've already closed around 100.

It used to be called Poundland because everything in there was a pound. Then a few years ago, they started selling loads of things that were £2, and £3, and £4. Then they ramped it up and started selling clothes and shoes and toys and household ornaments and cushions, and general household items and the like, and some stuff started being priced at much more. £8, £10, £15. Even more for some items.

The whole point was that everything was a pound. So they've basically lost their way... I haven't shopped in a Poundland store for about 5 or 6 years now. I use B & M, Poundstretcher, and Home Bargains... Seems like many others have drifted away too, as they're closing down stores left, right, and centre...

I respect your knowledge of budget stores.

Thank you. Smile I did do my research and yes, Poundstretcher DID take over Poundworld, and renamed the old Poundworld stores 'Bargain Byes.' They did not carry on the 'everything for a pound' though, and never have. It's very easy to Google it and see the facts.

Just Google...

did poundstretcher used to sell everything for a pound? It's very clear that they never did...

Also there's plenty of information here about Poundstretcher.. They have NEVER had a time when they sold everything or a pound.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poundstretcher

Plenty of info and evidence there that Poundstretcher never sold anything for a pound. NO information to say they did - because it's never happened.

We very rarely go in anymore. Lots of their items can be purchased cheaper in B&m and home bargains or for example they used to do toothpaste £1 Colgate but it was because it was actually smaller a lot of their branded items where smaller but people did not seem to realise.

I agree the name should have changed.

I never said Poundstretchers sold everything for £1.
I have never claimed that. Not once.
However MY research tells me the owners of Poundworld were going to use the name Bargain Buys but they went bust before they did.
As they had never registered the name the owners of Poundstretchers decided to use it.
The owners of Poundworld then started One Below which because One Beyond.
Why are we arguing about this anyway 😂
All I care about is the fact I have no Poundland's to shop in and it annoys me 😂😂😂

Poundland is a very badly run company. They had a distinctive USP on which the success of the business was built ; ‘everything’s £1’ But they binned it and now nothing is £1 so their pricing & customer offer is completely incoherent & confusing.

They opened a large store in Leicester city centre, on the site previously occupied by Wilko. It lasted 18 months before closing again. They operated two stores on the same street in Loughborough, less than 100m apart. Now, they have closed both and they don’t have a store in a town of 65k people. They deserve to go bust.

Needmorelego · 08/12/2025 17:49

@Ved the owners of Poundstretchers didn't "take over" Poundworld stores - they just took on some of the leases of the empty shops.
The same as Poundland moved into a lot of units that were previously Woolworths.

Needmorelego · 08/12/2025 17:51

@SpottyAardvark but they scrapped "everything for £1" almost a decade ago. How can it still be confusing?

FallingIntoAutumn · 08/12/2025 17:51

i understand inflation, so appreciate the £1 bit has long gone. What I object to is paying more than normal supermarkets (let alone Lidl or Aldi)
and the quality is just utter shit now. It’s a shame. They had a good thing going.

SerendipityJane · 08/12/2025 17:56

If you are going to run a physical (or possible even virtual) store, then some strategy would be nice. Strategy beyond "lets make as much money as possible".

As soon as you go into a shop and find yourself asking "What exactly is this shop ?" then the writing is on the wall.

KilliMonjaro · 08/12/2025 18:02

Yep it’s not surprising

But they sell mostly household goods and food so surely you'd expect to find the same products year after year.
The same as supermarkets or Boots etc.
It's not like you buy some toilet cleaner and never need to buy some again. It runs out...you buy more 🤷

I think Home Bargains does innovate more though.

A small thing but I find this food storage with removable compartments so useful preparing things like omelette fillings in advance. It's £5 or £6 in many places but £1.99 in Home Bargains.

Your spot on @nomas its about following trends isn’t it. home bargains, aldi and lidl all do this really well. With their dupes and social media.
Wilko did it really well too, range not so much as their quality isn’t anywhere near as good (probably how they are going and Wilko is not - Liz truzzs fault).

Exactly! They're like Primark for fashion, but for homewares instead.

Yes, shame about Wilko. I was shocked to see there was a Wilko a few weeks ago, I thought they had all gone!

The wilko near my mother became a Poundland and then that closed as well not much luck there for that premises.

they are owned by range now. So aren’t quite the same.
Poundland did used to be good at it, I remember influencers covering them a lot. I’ve got some oven dishes from there from about a decade ago. But now it’s just over priced shite.

Yes, it looked like Wilkos but was not the same.

I think this was the one I went to.
