To not be surprised that Poundland is failing. (Another 14 stores to close.)

And they've already closed around 100.

It used to be called Poundland because everything in there was a pound. Then a few years ago, they started selling loads of things that were £2, and £3, and £4. Then they ramped it up and started selling clothes and shoes and toys and household ornaments and cushions, and general household items and the like, and some stuff started being priced at much more. £8, £10, £15. Even more for some items.

The whole point was that everything was a pound. So they've basically lost their way... I haven't shopped in a Poundland store for about 5 or 6 years now. I use B & M, Poundstretcher, and Home Bargains... Seems like many others have drifted away too, as they're closing down stores left, right, and centre...

I use them a lot at Christmas time when I’m doing shopping for food banks. Sanitary products tend to be cheaper in there than boots etc.

OonaStubbs · 06/12/2025 21:05

Poundland used to sell everything for £1 though. And now they don't. Whereas Poundstretcher never did.

That's my point - they used to but
they stopped so dropped the slogan.
It was years ago that it changed so regular customers can't possibly still be thinking that's "everything's a pound".

Netcurtainnelly · 06/12/2025 21:31

They've has their day now.
Nothing strange about them closing. It was inevitable.

Nothing lasts forever.

They are a handy shop selling useful things though and are likely to have branches on small high streets unlike places like B+M which are frequently out of town retailers.
I live in London and have had so many convenient branches close down it's actually making it difficult for me to be able to buy basic household items easily.
I am really annoyed so many are gone/going.

This is what I've been saying. @Needmorelego you seem to be under the impression that Poundstretcher used to sell stuff for a pound. They have never done that. Poundstretcher have always had items for sale at various prices.

I think you are getting confused because they took over Poundworld about a decade ago - that DID sell everything for a pound, (not to be confused with Poundland,) and they renamed the Poundworld stores 'Bargain Buys.' However, they did not continue the Poundworld theme of 'everything for a pound.'

But yeah, Poundstretcher have never sold everything for a pound - ever.

@Ved I know that about Poundstretcher.
I've been shopping there since circa 1995 😂

Needmorelego · 07/12/2025 11:32

@Ved Poundstretcher never owned or had anything to do with Poundworld.
Completely separate companies.
They (Poundstretcher) have some stores called Bargain Buys.
Poundworld closed but the owners set up One Below. That has since been renamed One Beyond.

Needmorelego · 07/12/2025 11:39

@Ved what I meant all along was is someone is walking along a high street and they want to buy some toilet cleaner.
One side of the road has a shop called Poundland. The other side of the road has one called Poundstretcher.
Why would they assume one sells every for £1 and one doesn't?
A decade ago maybe but it hasn't been that way for many years when Poundland dropped the slogan.

You're wrong.

Poundstretcher DO have a connection with Poundworld. And I know that Poundstretcher have some stores called Bargain Buys, (I already said that.) They took over some Poundworld Stores, and renamed them Bargain Buys, but they dropped the 'everything for a pound' thing.

I literally cannot keep having this conversation with you. You're wrong in what you are saying, but you're adamant that you're right.

I'll leave you to it. I'm done going back and forth with you now. Have a good day. I won't be responding to you again on this thread. This conversation is Iike trying to put the sun out by pissing on it.

When my kids were small a visit to the local Poundland used to be the highlight of their weekends with grandparents. Grandad would give them each £1 and they could get whatever they liked.

But agree it has lost its USP in that everything is no longer £1. And it is competing with B&M, Home Bargains, Poundstretcher and cheap imported shite from Temu/Shein.

@Ved how rude you are.
I'm not sure why you've decided to be so rude in a conversation about shops.
Poundworld were going to use the name Bargain Buys.
They didn't because they went bust.
As they hadn't copyrighted/registered the name the company that owns Poundstretcher decided to use it.

Needmorelego · 07/12/2025 13:33

@Ved what exactly am I wrong about?
I know Poundstretcher has never just sold products for £1.
I've shopped at Poundstretcher for over 30 years - before Poundland became a big "thing".

lljkk · 07/12/2025 13:41

I still shop in Poundland, lol. I also shop at DollarTree in USA.

Inflation meant they couldn't keep prices at £1 forever.

B&M & the others mentioned are all places you have to drive to ime, whereas Poundland stores are in city centres which are pedestrian friendly places. That's probably the difference. British people like to pollute the air by using their cars so....

Beachtastic · 07/12/2025 13:53

Whoever was daft enough to call it Poundland is presumably now long retired, or dead.

It shows about as much business acumen as calling a shop "Shillingland" (for my generation) or "Farthingland" (for my parents' generation) 🤡

singthing · 07/12/2025 14:06

My poundland (poundstretcher? not sure...) always feels very claustrophobic. Like they have one too many aisles so the space in each one is too narrow. Plus they store new stock on top of the shelves so that feels high too*. And finally, I never know where anything is as they always have to move it round (at behest of HQ I expect) so all in all, it is just more effort than I value my time and mental energy at.

[*It isn't just them, my local co-op feels like a maze too!]

Woolies used to be known as the "3d and 6d" stores because everything cost 3d (pence) or 6d.
(The original American ones were "5 and Dime").
Obviously things changed.....
Although when they closed in early 09 many people kept whittering on about things like broken biscuits.
Which they hadn't sold for decades.
Some people seem a bit oblivious to change 😂

Sgtmajormummy · 07/12/2025 14:34

M&S used to be known as the Penny Bazaar and they’ve managed to move on with the times…
The last time I was in the UK I noticed a lot of Pepco stock in Poundland so wondered if they were starting a takeover. Obviously not.
I love Pepco, in fact I’m planning a trip there soon to get next year’s diary. I can’t find any others like it, and the price? €3!

berlinbaby2025 · 07/12/2025 14:56

They had to raise their prices to have a chance of survival so increased prices aren’t the issue. You can buy hardly anything for £1 these days so that’s just the way it is. But they should have seen the writing in the wall earlier, not expanded as quickly as they did, and rebranded. I do go in now and then for a can of fizzy drink - £75p which is crazy cheap.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/12/2025 14:57

Prefer Home Bargains. Similar prices and wider choice.

Pepco owned them for a while but they were the company that has now sold them off.
The shops they have in East European countries are called Pepco.
Some countries (including Ireland) they are (or were) called Dealz.
Why they didn't just change their name I don't know.

liquoriceallsortfamily · 07/12/2025 16:32

The clothes are fantastic. Good value and go up to large sizes too

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 07/12/2025 16:45

Inflation fucked them over.

Blingismything · 07/12/2025 16:48

Our local one had the self checkouts removed due to excessive amounts of shoplifting.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 07/12/2025 16:54

I went to my local one on Friday and I was surprised how many items were more expensive than Tesco
