Do people not realise that for those who welcome them into the family they are part of the family. And if you have a dog and say it's just a dog, I'm not sure you should have one.

Good.

The same way that my pupils were with me.

ETA However, I still had to get the stragglers in the corridor and concourse areas out. My colleagues in the Science Department got their pupils out and left the cages and tanks of small animals - as they had to.

I hope everyone was ok!

These threads are like catnip to the dog haters.

I think they are jealous no one smooches them on the nozzies and tells them they are so so floofy.

A human is just another animal.

So what's your point?

We are all sentinel beings and hence equal just because sine humans, like you think humans are superior does nit mean they are.

@Lifeneedsaresetagain I completely agree. Every lifeform is equal. Our dogs, cats, birds etc are our family.

Sentinel

The Sentinel is a boss creature that appears in The Evil Within. Encountered in the game's sixth chapter, this beast was an ordinary wolf before being subjected to horrific experiments in the laboratory beneath Cedar Hill Church. Following its mutation...

I don't hate dogs, I don't love them either. They are just neutral for me.

My issue is more with entitled dog owners and there's loads of them these days. I have no issues with responsible dog owners but they are few and far between now.

Au contraire. My DH is smooching my nozzies as we speak.

I was in decathlon browsing the hats when some bloke's dog pissed on the floor. It was disgusting, he ignored it and carried on shopping. Me and my kids couldn't believe he'd just let his dog do that. He then wandered around like nothing had happened. He didn't even alert the shop staff to ask for something to wipe it up. We were classic mumsnet 'horrified.' Never felt the same in decathlon again. Some dog owners are so entitled it's unreal.

Responsible dog owners will think he is a twat too.

I think that's for each household that welcomes an animal to determine, personally, I'd never have a cat, but I would never undermine or be derogatory to anyone who does by saying it's just a cat.

Nothing wrong at all with being a pet owner and animal lover. Of course, all animals are equal and none are "bettter" than any other one.

But, it is still "just" a dog/cat/bird etc. And why is it so awful and upsetting wrong to say this? Is it offensive 🤔? (I honestly am just asking it out of curiosity, not being goady at all.)

They were, thanks. Just a bit frightened.

Those who came off worst were the girls who were having a swimming lesson at the time. They had to run out of the PE block in their costumes and it was a cold day.

(The animals were all fine too. Fortunately for them, the smoke didn't reach the science labs.)

Because it gets said after someone has suffered the loss of their pet. Wondering why they can be so upset. "It is just a dog". No, they were a companion, a best friend, family.

It’s a reaction to the post-pandemic dog worship, dog-dependence and celebration of misanthropy.

Compared to humans, yes it is ‘just’ a dog.

Dogs are much better than humans.

Fair enough, that's of course very much a genuine reason and yes, they are family members, I agree. I just wanted to clarify 😄

Taxicus · 06/12/2025 00:31

But do you not remember when there was no way you'd take a dog in M&S, John lewis, in a cafe etc?

It just wasn't socially done at all. Dogs used to be left outside. We didn't have rules about it, everybody just understood this.

Lifeneedsaresetagain · 05/12/2025 22:50

I think they are very much on par with the humans in my family, it's how I was raised, it's how we raised our daughter. They're not a commodity or accessory.

Poor daughter.

Times are different now. People used to leave babies in prams outside shops.

It's just a baby, you can always have another one...

That would be a fairly offensive thing to say, surely? Get it now?

MangaKanga · 06/12/2025 00:32

I know many many great dogs and they all have decent, caring owners.🤷🏽‍♀️

I see a propensity to dog hatred as something fundamentally broken about a person.

‘Compared to humans’ is such a shitty thing to say. I consider every single sentient being equal. It’s always been insane to me that as humans we have just decided we are superior. Humans are capable of atrocities. We start wars, we murder each other, we abuse each other, we drop bombs on newborn babies - yet we somehow walk around saying things like “well compared to us humans, it’s just an animal!”. It’s bizarre.

Companion animals are capable of the purest form of unconditional love. I’m not even a particularly avid dog lover, but I’d honestly consider the life of a dog as equal to any human and they are family members, regardless of what some may think.

TortillaKitty · 06/12/2025 00:33

I’ve been bitten by one of these pampered one-of-the-family type dogs and have a lovely scar to show for it. No, I don’t want to be welcomed into your house by your dog jumping up persistently on my dress, dirtying it and scaring me. No, I don’t want to sip my tea with a dog pushing his snout into my hand. That’s gross. No, I don’t want to see my hostess cradle a dog the size of a small pony in her lap like a baby and tell me all about his anxiety issues and how he’s on medication to stop him lashing out randomly.

No, I’m not a fan of babying dogs. Sorry.

I've got to the point where I just don't care any more about the dog hate threads. They're pointless and have no relevance. They're also not representative of real life.
If you know you know. If you don't, then it's your loss.
I live with a canine creature that is most definitely not "just a dog".

They do with dogs on here. Say people who have lost a dog get another. Yes, some do, sometimes years later as they are not ready. And the new dog is not replacing the old one. That is impossible.
