To suggest that all the people who know people who are definitely faking disability for benefits should report them.

So many people post online about knowing a person or family, some apparently know multiple people who are lying to claim PIP or DLA for their children.
If you know this for a fact as us claimed then you should report them.

I think the way you use living in the roughest end of a badgers ass where “everyone” is apparently fraudulently claiming to push the idea benefit fraud is super common is disgusting. Making false reports can ruin lives.

What are you even talking about?

It is a fact that benefit claims are highest in deprived areas.

Also, I’m not advocating reporting anyone.

I wouldn’t report anyone for actual benefit fraud, never mind suspected benefit fraud.

I was told on here to report my grandmother who is in her 80s FFS. By posters who were strongly denying that benefit fraud happens.

I imagine the OP is that kind of poster.

The people saying that they know x person who fraudulently claims benefits aren’t saying they have any intention of reporting them. I imagine most have no intention whatsoever of reporting anyone. It is the posters who are denying that benefit fraud happens that are shouting about reporting people.

It might have been you or a separate poster who also claimed to live in a really poor place where everyone’s allegedly fraudulently claiming. I mean sure but 99% of the uk isn’t like that. Apparently us middle class mumsnet people don’t get it ? Except most of the uk is middle class and most families need a uc top up to pay the rent and bills these days. It’s not just people in “deprived areas” who claim benefits practically everyone’s on uc to some extent.

But whether it’s your intention or not you and that other poster are making benefit fraud sound more common than it is by waffling on about how you live in the one of the poorest 1% roughest neighbourhoods where everyone’s apparently commiting fraud when 99% of the uk isn’t like that. You might not actually report people but someone reading your comment might

Slipperati · 03/12/2025 22:08

lol… 23% of MN disagrees which obv means 23% of MN is faking disability for benefits!

Mokeytree · 03/12/2025 22:07

What is she claiming for fraudulently?

I’m not going to derail the thread by getting into it on here, because I was followed around last time being laughed at and called a liar and I can’t be dealing with that again.

But my issue is with the welfare system generally, not with the individuals claiming. They do so because they can.

Joeninety · 03/12/2025 22:14

So our lovely government wants everyone to be snitches then, just like the worst excesses of 60's communist China ? If they were more competent, half of the feckless wouldn't get a penny. Just like their abysmal border checks.......Actually, abysmal nearly everything !

I grew up in an impoverished area, but I no longer live there.

I mean sure but 99% of the uk isn’t like that. Apparently us middle class mumsnet people don’t get it ? Except most of the uk is middle class and most families need a uc top up to pay the rent and bills these days.

This is absolute bullshit. 21% of people in the UK live in poverty. 31% of all children in the UK live in poverty. Not 1% as you suggest.

It’s not just people in “deprived areas” who claim benefits practically everyone’s on uc to some extent.

Again, complete bullshit. It’s about 40% of all UK households that claim UC. Certainly not everyone.

You might not actually report people but someone reading your comment might

The only people encouraging others to report benefit fraud are the ones who are denying that it happens.

If People suspect someone of fraud they should report them
its breaking the law

If people are innocent they have nothing to be worried about
but no one should be put off reporting ‘ just in case’

Would you turn a blind eye to suspicious loud noice next door because ‘ it may be nothing’ .

Edited

This is BS.

Someone's benefits can be stopped completely if they are reported. With catastrophic affects.

I'd mind my own bloody business in case I was wrong and the person was innocent.

It's not the same as reporting 'a suspicious noise'.

That’s got nothing to do with what you said, you said you lived in a super poor area where everyone is apparently commiting fraud. You (or someone posting similar) sort of described a post apocalyptic hellscape of fraud.
According to this link at the time someone maliciously reported me for “fraud” I was poorer than 98% of people in this country. https://ifs.org.uk/tools_and_resources/where_do_you_fit_in

did I live in a place like what you described? No

also “everyone” was never meant to be literal. 40% is still pretty high and it’ll be higher for people with kids. Definitely includes a lot of average people who according to you (or someone else who’s posts similar to you) have no idea what they’re talking about

“The only people encouraging others to report benefit fraud are the ones who are denying that it happens.“

How the hell does this work?

Also how are we quoting a part of someone’s comment and making it bold?

Starconundrum · 03/12/2025 23:25

Kettlepotkettle · 03/12/2025 21:34

Once upon a time I wasn’t a gargantuan c* * *.

You could say I had a bad experience with people who get kicks out of reporting innocent people for fraud. And now here we are

Same.

When my kids were young I was reported 3 times for housing benefit fraud in one year. i had to go to court to keep my rented house. On the third time the council wrote to me and told me that next time I was reported they would be investigating the reporter instead of me. It had cost the council far more to investigate than to just leave it and had caused me untold unnecessary stress. That last time they didn't investigate me or put my account on hold. They advised I tell everyone I knew what they would do, and, like magic, I stopped being reported.

I have a very very low opinion of people who maliciously report others. It happens far more often than people realise and the victims are very often vulnerable people.

OonaStubbs · 03/12/2025 23:33

What methods do the DWP use to investigate? Are they authorised to use things like lie detectors and truth serum or is that not allowed?

Rosealea · 03/12/2025 23:35

Maybe stop judging others from your ivory tower and mind your own beeswax. You've zero idea what's going on in other people's lives!

Thelnebriati · 03/12/2025 23:35

I was reported maliciously multiple times and in the end asked the DWP to keep track of who was making the reports.
Hey presto, that was the last time.

It's pretty much everyone isn't it? I mean everyone knows how simple claiming pip is! You just go to the doctor and say 'I'm a bit sad' and you get full rate and a free car and are automatically £71000 better off than a HARD WORKING person the Very Next Day!

This is so not true. I know loads on PIP that maybe I think dont need it. I could be wrong though. But my son who is seriously ill with a feeding tube. Physically ill and mentally too now and we are having to fight to get him anything.
Maybe I dont know how to play the system correctly? But it really isn't easy.

Kettlepotkettle · 03/12/2025 21:04

99% of the uk isn’t like that though, 99% of people claiming benefits are legit, stop pushing the idea fraud is widespread just because you worked in dumpsville. Seriously it could ruin lives. Think about it there are families with children who need uc to pay their rent. Nosy busybodies are causing intense stress to people trying to get on with their lives. Read my previous comments I’ve been on the receiving end of it it’s horrible

Where did I ever say that fraud is wide spread? I never mentioned fraud in any of my posts….I mentioned some facts about the places I have worked ….how people are many generations unemployed …..how many unemployed live in close proximity in purpose built overspill towns ….. who do you fucking think you are spouting shite about me

OonaStubbs · 03/12/2025 23:43

People have a right to know that their money is being spent properly. And it can get annoying going out to work every morning while some people are lounging around in bed with their curtains closed.

Yes, night shift workers are a pain in the arse.

GameofPhones · 04/12/2025 00:35

The reluctance of people to report benefit fraud when they 'know' it is happening is really strange. Almost a mental health condition in itself...

GaIadriel · 04/12/2025 00:42

Kettlepotkettle · 03/12/2025 19:34

No I haven’t and sure I can believe there are some places like that 99% of the uk isn’t. Genuinely I can’t get too worked up by someone living in an obscure poor place doing such a thing doubt it has too much effect on the economy.

What I can get worked up about is the 99% of benefit fraud reporters who are just paranoid or spiteful. What were you doing when you were 21? Dealing with some miserable bitch twice your age with a vendetta trying to get you and your kids evicted and spreading rumours because she couldn’t comprehend someone actually gets on with their child’s father?

And now picking on disabled people.

Could you maybe tell that story again? I didn't catch it the first five times. 😂

UserFront242 · 04/12/2025 00:44

GameofPhones · 04/12/2025 00:35

That is because they don't. "My neighbour claims PIP for depression but I saw them out last week" type shit.
Most people have no fucking clue about the health conditions others are claiming for.

GentleOlive · 04/12/2025 01:33

And what do you think would happen if all of these fraudsters were reported. Nothing would happen. Because the people dishing out other peoples hard earned money don’t care. They care more about arresting you for a social media post than any real crime.

And no one is falling for this gaslighting anymore that all benefits claimants ate genuine. Abuse is rampant and the majority are just defrauding the ever smaller number of people paying for these luxuries. We need a government that will cut benefits down to the bone. Not one that buys their voter pool by dishing out endless free money.

LBFseBrom · 04/12/2025 01:37

You are not being unreasonable to suggest reporting them but I, personally, would not do that. I'm no grass.

reformidontthinkso · 04/12/2025 01:46

surreygirly · 03/12/2025 16:28

You mean like the 22 year old girl I know who cannot work because of depression and anxiety who is getting benefits
She is not too anxious or depressed however to go to the gym most days, go out for meals and to clubs with bf and friends , to go on a 6 week holiday to South Africa and a 3 week holiday to Egypt paid for by her parents
To be fair both parents who run their own business think she is going to being sponging from hem for ever but she is their daughter they love her they are stuck with it

How do you know she is claiming benefits? How do you know which ones?

bleakmidwintering · 04/12/2025 01:46

What an absolutely horrendous thread. More disability bashing! I think this seals is it for me with Mumsnet. I’m done. All these fucking Daily mail readers bashing people on benefits. They are an easy target for you aren’t they? Sad fucker that you are!
