To suggest that all the people who know people who are definitely faking disability for benefits should report them.

So many people post online about knowing a person or family, some apparently know multiple people who are lying to claim PIP or DLA for their children.
If you know this for a fact as us claimed then you should report them.

I assume this thread on fraud has come about because of the increased measures being proposed
to detect fraudulent claims

The DWP pays benefits to nearly 24 million people across Great Britain, including 3.7m on PIP. The latest DWP report shows £330m was lost to fraud and error in the PIP system last year, up from £90m in 2023/24.

( some figures note 3.8mill on PIP )

Overpayments due to Fraud were 0.4% (£100m) in FYE 2025, compared with 0.0% (£0m) in FYE 2024.

So, fraud is still very low. I have a feeling it might have been around 0.4% in fye 2023. But I might be misremembering.

It is! I have 2 children. 1 who gets it and 1 I haven’t bothered to apply for because I know how difficult it is to get. They have the same multiple conditions, 1 who gets it has an additional condition.

It really isnt! My DS has PIP for various things. I have NEVER sent any paperwork other than the original forms. They have NEVER contacted his consultant or his GP ( ive asked) or requested his medical records. His latest award was for 5 years.

MysteriousInspector · 03/12/2025 18:35

Detected fraud is low. Is there some way of estimating how much fraud is undetected?

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 03/12/2025 18:37

The government statistics mean nothing, this is only the people they have actually caught committing fraud. With the minuscule resources that are allocated to benefit fraud it’s hardly surprising! The real number will be absolutely massive in comparison to the official figures!

It's pretty much everyone isn't it? I mean everyone knows how simple claiming pip is! You just go to the doctor and say 'I'm a bit sad' and you get full rate and a free car and are automatically £71000 better off than a HARD WORKING person the Very Next Day!

Somebody tell me this is an exaggeration- please!

HC1ps · 03/12/2025 18:14

How do you know, did you do an assessment update?

Helped with the application initially any was asked if I knew any ways a large Inheritance could be hidden from the DWP - I declined to offer any further input. As I say, I have credible, knowledge of this case, and unfortunately a good few others.

Do you realise how frightening it is to possibly lose your benefits because some arsehole who barely knows you, can just report you like that? No I'm not doing anything wrong but do you realise that shit like this can make some people's illnesses worse?

Exactly some sad miserable hag once almost had me and my children evicted from our home because I wouldn’t have been able to pay the rent if my money had been stopped. She was bitter I get on with my child’s dad and she doesn’t with hers and have a better happier family than her despite being less than half her age. Decided that it was “definitely fraud” to get on well with your children’s dad.

I know this thread is about disabled people but I highly doubt all these people claiming to “know” someone’s definitely committing fraud have been told “I’m lying about being disabled for the pip” it’s all just spitefulness. 99% of reports for benefit fraud are probably just bitterness and spite

Of course it is. It’s a 14 page form for which you need to provide substantial evidence and paperwork.

Because those of us who definitely do know lots of people claiming who should not be claiming would be faced with violence if we did. The amount of dealers, criminals, their girlfriends and their mates I know who claim is unbelievable. would I put myself at risk? Also we have often been brought up in a culture where you don’t grass. It’s instilled. So when half of our families are doing it we just keep our mouths shut . Context matters. If you have been brought up in a middle class area you aren’t likely to know many people who are fiddling the system. It’s those of us who have been raised on council estates in deprived areas that know these people. But of course we must be lying.

wossupthen is being sarcastic. The Telegraph or the Times published a load of bull shit along those lines the other day. It has been widely debunked.

Runrabbitrunss · 03/12/2025 18:43

But HOW do they fake it - I thought it was very difficult.
However, my friend s son who is autistic and stays in his room mostly ( adult) has pip for mobility as he rarley goes out and they say that ghey have to help him psychologically to go out as he now lacks confidence to go out - since he spends his day gaming ( but many would lose confidence if did the same pattern) she is now classed as his carer and had gateway benefits paid to
the household- they are very middle class - and know how to work the system via bloggers advice etc.
As tor me and dh we both have medical issues and a disability - but we work . You can actually be disabled and work - but they encourage us to claim - when its not our bag
i am amazed how they systematically work the system- its not fraud - its exaggeration and a knowledge of the system..

It seems most fraud that is currently detected

is overpayments by dwp but not declared by recipients
claimants not updating reduced need

No idea how anyone would estimate % of undetected fraud….

What absolute BOLLOCKS!!

You clearly don't have a clue about PIP, 'wossupthen', unless you were being sarcastic, which I'm not sure about? If you weren't being sarcastic, then let me educate you. You DO NOT get a FREE car!! Depending on the car you chose, many people have to pay an up front payment, on my last car this was £4,000. I hand over ALL of the 'higher rate mobility component' of my PIP payment each month towards my car. I could chose not to have a Motability car, and it would save me a lot of money which I could spend on food, heating, or even a holiday, if I could physically manage to have one, but instead I chose to spend this part of my benefit on a car, which needs to be the right height for me to get into without causing me severe pain, and is comfortable enough not to exacerbate my condition, in order that on the odd days when I'm not in absolute agony, and stuck at home in bed, I can actually pretend that I'm an able bodied person like you, and go out to see the world for an hour or two! When I'm not well enough to use it myself, my husband is allowed to use it, to go shopping, and do other tasks for ME that I can't do myself.

I think you missed the tongue wedged firmly in cheek.

Alloveragain44 · 03/12/2025 18:48

Early on my OT career I had a man on my caseload who was a wheelchair user. Apparently he'd problems with his back which caused pain and impacted his mobility. I assessed him and for a man who alleged such little mobility he had surprisingly good muscle tone. It wasn't enough to prove anything but it got my suspicion raised. He was asking for around £25,000 worth of adaptations to his house which at the time would purchase an extension. I decided to watch him as I had other people living on the same road. One day I was "passing " only to see him shifting fence panels in his garden he lumped the concrete posts qbout as well. I took photographs grassed him up to the council hen to the DLA. Stupid man

If People suspect someone of fraud they should report them
its breaking the law

If people are innocent they have nothing to be worried about
but no one should be put off reporting ‘ just in case’

Would you turn a blind eye to suspicious loud noice next door because ‘ it may be nothing’ .

Edited

Do you have the slightest idea of what can happen to people who are erroneously reported? You don't, do you?

Some of it’s generational isn’t it. The grandmother is only 64 and on a wheelie frame. The daughter works part time but told me she’s got fibromyalgia. The teenage son is waiting to be assessed so he doesn’t go to school or anywhere else. I daresay they’re entitled to whatever benefits they get but what a life

Wrong. You just have to phone up and they automatically deposit the money in your account there and then AND send a gift card. It’s outrageous.

Jabtastic · 03/12/2025 18:52

I wish people would report to be honest, because it would quickly weed out the genuine claimants from the fake ones.
