I have name changed for this. I am disgusted and embarrassed by the state of my teeth. I’m only 37 and don’t know how they got like this. I think the years I suffered from bulimia haven’t helped.

I am too embarrassed to go to the dentist. Can anyone help to reassure me somehow.

Can't see anything wrong with your teeth. If yours are bad then I need euthanasia in comparison.

Toothfairy89 · 03/12/2025 16:30

As a dentist you don't need to be scared of going even if every single tooth is decayed. I genuinely could not give a shiny shit, it is my job to care for teeth

However your teeth look fine in the photo. They are clean, your gums are pink and healthy, no obvious calculus, maybe a tiny bit of staining/calculus between some of your teeth but nothing a quick scale can't fix. In my current place of work those would be probably the best teeth I saw all day (certainly the cleanest). Don't worry, you have nothing to be embarrassed about

Your teeth are fine!! (I was a dental nurse before my son was born so have seen it all) they are a tiny bit stained which could be scaled off or you could get teeth whitening. But they’re straight and healthy I promise x

I voted yabu, but kindly and with a massive amount of sympathy. I have a terrible dental phobia.

There's no pic yet but they'll always have seen worse.

Just get down there.

If you're in the UK, ask to be referred to the Community Dentist. Your GP can refer you if you aren't registered with a dentist.

It's an NHS specialist service. Among other things they deal with phobic/anxious patients. A friend told me about it. Somehow I was able to have a procedure I'd needed for 10 years but was too scared to deal with. It's a game changer ❤

Agreeing with everyone that they're fine to look at, obviously a dentist should check them for health and if you're in pain that's another issue. I hope you can get a supportive one and feel ok.
It is true sickness/ED can cause issues for teeth; mine worsened due to pregnancy sickness, which is very common they said, and there's nothing I can do but keep seeing the dentist and get treatment so they don't get any worse than they have to.
There's so many images of Ross white teeth online that some people expect theirs to look like that. Not many have completely white, even teeth normally.
Didn't most people have false teeth by their 30s in our great grandparents' time? I bet not many had teeth that look as good as the photo.

@SwingleSingle wtaf?? Your teeth look amazing!

Did you upload the wrong photo? All I can see is a photo of nice teeth.

PigeonsandSquirrels · 03/12/2025 17:02

They literally just need a clean…

SwingleSingle · 03/12/2025 18:58

Thanks everyone. I really didn’t expect this response. I thought my teeth were yellow and was convinced my gums must be in terrible shape. It’s years since I’ve been to the dentist. I also get a very dry mouth, which I worry will be damaging my teeth.

I really thought mine were more yellow than everyone else’s. It’s a relief to hear they are more normal than I realised.

Your teeth look nice. My friends partners teeth are all black and shrivelled - years of neglect, smoking, sugar. He goes to the dentist.
Yours will probably be the best set they see that day!

Lifelover16 · 03/12/2025 19:11

Your teeth look great! I’d swap with you if I could.
Take care of them and go to the dentist. Tell them about your anxiety when you book your appointment and they may offer some suggestions to help you.

Trendyname · 05/12/2025 06:54

Your teeth are not awful. I was expecting them to be really bad. They are pretty normal. These are not the kind you would be embarrassed to see a dentist. Sorry, but I think you are doing this for attention.

I have massive dental phobia, I once had a panic attack in the chair (i was having a tooth out). I'm also needle phobic which doesn't help.

I force myself to go, because I need to go. It isn't pleasant but a good dentist understands people with dental phobia.

When I registered with my new dentist, I mentioned my phobias and they registered me with a dentist who specialises in dental phobic patients. He's absolutely wonderful, very calm, explains everything, takes his time. Same with the hygienist, she pauses and gives me time, very gentle.
