What should replace sprouts in a Xmas dinner?

Clearly they take up valuable space that could be better utilised. So what should we have instead? Probably veg is good to have, but let's have a decent one instead.

And let's keep this honest. We are all grown ups here, so nobody needs to pretend to like the balls of doom. Even if you are adding bacon or chestnuts to hide the taste of them.

I genuinely love sprouts and eat them all winter long, but if you're not keen then another traditional seasonal green brassica would be the best replacement. A cabbage, e.g., Savoy or January King seems ideal. Shredded cabbage, steamed or lightly boiled, really is an excellent vehicle for all that delicious gravy!

Non-seasonal summer veg like green beans doesn't seem appropriate for the midwinter feast, somehow, even if you don't adhere to seasonal eating in general.

I make a delicious gratin where I layer leeks, sprouts and savoy cabbage with gruyere cheese and cream topped with parmesan. It satisfies my sisters' requirement that there must be sprouts. Importantly I don't have to tell them how many sprouts went in.

I've started shredding my sprouts and stir frying with black pepper, garlic and butter. Much, much tastier than the boiled fart balls that I was used to. And the texture makes a nice contrast to other things on the Christmas dinner too.
If you are going to replace, I think you have to go for something cabbagey and slightly bitter

This sounds delicious 😋

I like shredded savoy cabbage with salt, pepper & butter. Sprouts are rubbish.

Sprouts taste of Christmas!

if you don’t like them you’re doing them wrong, parboiled then sauté with butter, crispy bacon and walnuts or chesnuts. No way does a green bean compare.

I had jeursalem artichokes in Spain this year they were in a potato salady thing. I don't think i had them before that.

I love Jerusalem artichokes, short season here in the UK usually April or May and hard to get hold of. Also worse for wind than sprouts.

Creamed cabbage with bacon

Girasoli · 03/12/2025 20:44

@MiddleAgedDread haha I'm not English so a roast isn't our traditional Christmas meal. We usually do have one but with a few changes.

Bloody love them. Sorry. You sprout heathens should feck off to the land of some parts of Thanksgiving America where they serve candied yams out of a tin topped with marshmallows, then serve it with savoury dinner. If ever there was a crime, this is it

Sprouts are delicious. Perhaps you never learned to prepare and cook them properly?

Yep I don’t understand people saying they don’t like sprouts but then like cabbage , I do think it comes from a mental space of maybe having them boiled to death asa child. Well Steamed baby ones with a knob of butter at end are delicious. I must admit I’m not as keen if they are left with ‘bite’

UpMyself · 04/12/2025 11:08

Sprouts and cabbage taste differently.
I like most green veg but overboiled cauliflower or broccoli is not great.

Most root veg tastes better roasted. I don't care much for sweet vegetables like sweet potatoes and sweetcorn, they're ok occasionally.
