What should replace sprouts in a Xmas dinner?

Clearly they take up valuable space that could be better utilised. So what should we have instead? Probably veg is good to have, but let's have a decent one instead.

And let's keep this honest. We are all grown ups here, so nobody needs to pretend to like the balls of doom. Even if you are adding bacon or chestnuts to hide the taste of them.

'Probably veg is good' 😂Keep sprouts, delicious. Make sure you have at least 5 other vegetables for choice. Job done.

I love sprouts, especially oven roasted or airfried

Sweetcorn with plenty of butter.

Nooooo..the devils vegetable👍

I love sprouts, but, if I was going to replace them, I'd have asparagus instead. I think you've just had very badly cooked sprouts over the years, OP!

Nothing. Nothing can replace their perfection.

Gavel.

The whole point of a Christmas dinner is that it’s served with seasonal veg. No ‘summer veg’

ErrolTheDragon · 03/12/2025 08:06

Brocolli and/or cavalero Nero or savoy cabbage.
not asparagus, that doesn’t belong on the same plate as gravy.

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 03/12/2025 08:10

The only greens on my plate are peas plus the sage in the stuffing.

Roast spuds, swee

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 03/12/2025 08:13

Oops. Glitch.

Roast veg: spuds, sweet potato, parsnip, carrots
Greens: peas
Meat: turkey, pigs in blankets
Plus: sage and onion stuffing, gravy
Optional: Yorkshire pudding

Anything else is a waste of plate space.

HumerousHumous · 03/12/2025 08:15

Swap for a nice braised red cabbage with Christmas spices? Or purple sprouting broccoli, roasted.
I’m in the ‘love sprout’ camp. I had them in Budapest - on a pizza. Apparently it’s a thing over there.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 03/12/2025 08:27

Savoy cabbage with lemon and garlic

Tiredofwhataboutery · 03/12/2025 08:34

I like them but cooking with butter, salt and bacon. I’d consider replacing it with green cabbage parboiled in chicken stock then pan fried with bacon to finish.

Sprouts are really nice in a stir fry when finely sliced.

J'adore sprouts

Asparagus! At Christmas, with turkey!

<faints>

UpMyself · 03/12/2025 09:03

Asparagus? The asparagus season is late April through to June.
The brussel sprout season is October to December.

You might as well suggest ditching the Christmas pudding and serving strawberries and ice cream instead.

Pollqueen · 02/12/2025 19:27

Yes, roast parsnips and 🥕 are as mandatory as sprouts!

<whispers> I don't like parsnips 😳

Me neither. They're just about edible if roasted but not if they are boiled.

Don't give them ideas!

I like Parmesan roast parsnips, which is a Delia Smith recipe and a fixture on our Christmas dinner table. Creamed parsnips and parsnip soup are also good. Plain boiled parsnips wouldn't be.

Love a button sprout me. But whatever happened to Jerusalem artichokes? My old nan made pans of these with white sauce.

UpMyself · 03/12/2025 09:53

How about cardoons, if you can get them. Organic Cardoons 500g / Riverford

I had jeursalem artichokes in Spain this year they were in a potato salady thing. I don't think i had them before that.

Ah yes! My Mum used to make delicious artichoke soup which was known in our house as tickly soup, I think because of the slightly grainy quality of it. It was before the days of blenders. Or maybe it was a peppery recipe 🤔 I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed it. Never made it myself but will be on the lookout for them now to give it a go. 😄

Justcallmedaffodil · 03/12/2025 10:06

We all love sprouts, but if we couldn’t have them for any reason… maybe creamed kale?

If they're available in the shop, I'm happy to indulge at Christmas! Life would be very boring if we all stuck to the same stuff now, wouldn't it?!
