What should replace sprouts in a Xmas dinner?

Clearly they take up valuable space that could be better utilised. So what should we have instead? Probably veg is good to have, but let's have a decent one instead.

And let's keep this honest. We are all grown ups here, so nobody needs to pretend to like the balls of doom. Even if you are adding bacon or chestnuts to hide the taste of them.

Sprouts are better than stuffing IMO!

(I know, I’m weird, I just don’t like the texture of stuffing)

Lemonade2011 · 02/12/2025 20:11

I’d have more sprouts less turkey…..

I haven’t seen any of those for ages! Where do you get them?

We last had them from our veg box, but I’ve seen them in the supermarkets on and off. I also have a friend who grows them on her allotment!

Bobloblawww · 02/12/2025 20:23

If you don’t like them you’re probably cooking them wrong.

user2848502016 · 02/12/2025 20:39

I actually really do like them and have them with other meals not Christmas dinner (even have been known to chuck them in stir fries…)

But if you really need a replacement I’d go for another green veg, probably broccoli or peas

Sprouts are the creation of Satan himself, anything is acceptable as a replacement including nothing at all.

mondaytosunday · 02/12/2025 20:43

Nothing can replace sprouts - we love them!

Girasoli · 02/12/2025 21:06

We always have green beans - they are green, and one of DS1s favourite vegetables.

I think salad could go quite well too if you aren't having gravy.

You don't need to.pretend guys. Your mum and dad aren't forcing them down you any more. You're free to eat edible food now

Sprouts are the food of gods! roast /air fry them, don't boil the hell out of them hours/days.

Velveletteslonleylonelygirlami · 02/12/2025 21:23

Garden peas.

HeadNorth · 02/12/2025 21:27

More sprouts - I love sprouts. No need to fuck about with veg in a xmas dinner- keep it green & fresh to provide contrast with the fat & carbs

salad and no gravy?? What sort of Xmas dinner is going on here?? 😱

MellowPinkDeer · 02/12/2025 21:45

Cauliflower cheese or leeks in cheese sauce.

PortSalutPlease · 02/12/2025 21:46

Literally ANYTHING else

Endofyear · 02/12/2025 22:18

I love sprouts! Never boil them though, I halve them and stir fry with garlic and onions - we have them often not just for Christmas! You can replace with any green vegetables - kale, cabbage, leeks, broccoli?

HoskinsChoice · 02/12/2025 23:10

Linenpickle · 02/12/2025 18:24

Extra Yorkshire puddings!

This. And more roast potatoes. You could replace the vast majority of foods with those two items actually.

LonelyPotato · 02/12/2025 23:14

Noooo! Sprouts dipped in mint sauce are the way to go 😍

Maddy70 · 02/12/2025 23:14

Nothing. It's the law you have sprouts whether you like them or not :)

No sprouts = not a Christmas dinner!

Ijwwm · 03/12/2025 02:14

Are you mad?

Sprouts are my favourite veg, no way they’re being replaced. And sprouts aren’t just for Xmas, I’ll have them whenever I can.

Perfectly accompanied by some sweet chantenay carrots and petis pois.

be gone, you evil sprout hating person!

sleepandcoffee · 03/12/2025 02:51

I love sprouts !
shredded leeks and savoy cabbage with plenty of butter could be a good green alternative

Alondra · 03/12/2025 03:02

I wouldn't eat sprouts if you pay me. I hate the buggers.

Honey glazed carrots, oven baked cheese cauliflower and roasted cauliflower steaks drizzled with olive oil, lemon juice and garlic are delicious as a substitute.

CheeseIsMyIdol · 03/12/2025 03:07

Sweetcorn with plenty of butter.

TwinklyNight · 03/12/2025 06:21

Asparagus?

GreenGodiva · 03/12/2025 06:25

I love sprouts! I could happily eat a bowl of sprouts, stuffing and pigs in blankets every day in December♥️
