What should replace sprouts in a Xmas dinner?

Clearly they take up valuable space that could be better utilised. So what should we have instead? Probably veg is good to have, but let's have a decent one instead.

And let's keep this honest. We are all grown ups here, so nobody needs to pretend to like the balls of doom. Even if you are adding bacon or chestnuts to hide the taste of them.

I genuinely love them!

Extra Yorkshire puddings!

This 😁

But the only proper place for sprouts is on a Christmas dinner and a Christmas dinner is not a Christmas dinner without some sprouts. This is a hill I’d be willing to die on.

Absolutely 100 per cent correct. My ds2 loathes them but he’ll be having some on his plate. I couldn’t not do it x

Chasingsquirrels · 02/12/2025 18:26

The only problem with sprouts is peeling the little buggers, we have them throughout the season (frozen sprouts can be horrible) and I'd have more per meal but I get fed up of taking the dirty layers off.

Also, I can't see a sprout thread without hearing "Put my sprouts on in November" in head.

This 😁

Only if you are having beef. I said it. It's a rule 😁

StrawberrySquash · 02/12/2025 18:29

Something green. Probably a nice cabbage dish.

Pollqueen · 02/12/2025 18:30

I love properly cooked brussel sprouts with some real butter and ground black pepper so I would learn to cook them properly and not replace them with anything

Nothing. Nothing can replace their perfection.

👏🙌

You don't need to.pretend guys. Your mum and dad aren't forcing them down you any more. You're free to eat edible food now

I turned up my nose in disgust at sprouts until my mid 30's. Then, to my complete surprise, I suddenly developed a liking for them.

Mind you, we do live in a big sprout-growing district, so it was inevitable really.😂

Back to your question... leeks in cheese sauce, baby broad beans, romanesco, runner beans, curly kale, cavolo nero, any of those would be acceptable.

Goonie1 · 02/12/2025 18:36

I love sprouts. My mum used to do plenty on Christmas Day and I’d eat the leftover ones a bit later in the day.

Ghostsghoulsteenagers · 02/12/2025 18:37

Cauliflower cheese and braised red cabbage

Agree, why are people pretending if they say they like them op - what rubbish.

Twiglets1 · 02/12/2025 18:46

Cauliflower cheese though we have this & sprouts. Also peas & carrots. My husband cooks Christmas dinner & he cooks the vegetables everyone likes.

I’m the only one in the family that actually likes sprouts so I buy a little packet of pre peeled baby sprouts and scoff the lot.

TheShed7 · 02/12/2025 18:46

There are certain things that people 100% cannot like.

War
Poverty
Murder
Mrs Browns Boys
Coldplay
Sprouts

That's just scientific fact.

True - my sister & her husband recommended Mrs Browns Boys but we found it completely unfunny.

I love sprouts. No need to disguise them. 🤷‍♀️

Me too! They might even be my favourite green veg. When cooked well, they're bloody delicious.

Any leftover sprouts are fantastic chopped and used for bubble and squeak, too.

Mathsbabe · 02/12/2025 18:51

Bring the sprouts on. Fab veg we eat throughout the season.

StupidHappyClocks · 02/12/2025 18:51

Something green, I suppose. Broccoli or cabbage or green beans? But no. No no no! Genuinely love a sprout (and actually hate it when people add bacon and chestnuts and butter. Why add to perfection?)

itsthetea · 02/12/2025 18:54

Save the sprout!
sprouts are for life not just Christmas!
what do we want - sprouts. When do we want them - now and Christmas

SparklyGlitterballs · 02/12/2025 18:56

I never cared much for boiled sprouts. Now they get par-boiled for a couple of minutes, shredded, and pan fried with bacon lardons. I love them and eat them willingly. No pretending or forcing in this house.

ChristmasMantleStatue · 02/12/2025 18:57

i once had sprouts, cold as part of a mezze platter.

Halved. Par-boiled. Then marinated in olive oil, garlic, lemon juice and mint. Topped with crumbled feta.

Very good. Really.

MyThreeWords · 02/12/2025 18:58

Replace each sprout with three sprouts. That way you can have twice as many on Christmas Day and still have some cold directly from the saucepan on Boxing Day.

They are nutty and delicious. Fun-sized cabbages.

TheHateIsNotGood · 02/12/2025 19:03

Roast parsnips and boiled carrots.
