To hate going out when it’s cold

Mashedpotatodaily · 02/12/2025 15:45

At the moment I’m mainly dropping dd quickly at school, forcing myself to take ddog for a walk, wfh, picking Dd up and that’s it
I order shopping in or do the big shop once per week
It never used to bother me and I went out at night in winter etc, now it takes a lot, just love staying in my house

Is this normal? I’m 47, I couldn’t stay in when younger

Does anyone else feel like this?

Have you aware of coats? Gloves? A hat maybe?

IAmNotSureAboutYouNow · 02/12/2025 15:49

Not me, I’m mid-40s and love going out hiking in all weathers. I have decent outdoor clothing & get out every day

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 02/12/2025 15:50

I get it. But it’s very cold here between October and March and needs must.

Netcurtainnelly · 02/12/2025 15:50

Not keen either, but if you have too, you have too.

landlordhell · 02/12/2025 15:50

Silly question but are you dressing properly? Layers/thermal top under your clothes, proper coat and gloves? I dislike the dark nights but love the cold days especially if it’s bright.

HansHolbein · 02/12/2025 15:51

Yes, the cold can fuck off.

Yes 😂Still hate it and want to hibernate at home, just seems a hassle going out

I hate going out in the cold too, but I must!

PinkSkies2026 · 02/12/2025 16:12

I'm recovering from flu at the moment so trying to stay at the same temp, but on the whole I like winter as long as you are wrapped up.

Also love setting the thermostat for an hour before getting home, it is genuinely one of life's wonderful wonders to be able to have central heating. I grew up in a home with one of those rubbish air vent heating systems that blew hot air and dust around the house.

Hedgehogx · 02/12/2025 16:15

Im loving it.

25percentoffeverything · 02/12/2025 16:16

I don't like the idea, but I just need to get out and I am fine. It's never as bad as I think.

It's harder in a heatwave when I go out, but I can't be bothered, and every run is a painful slow process 😂

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/12/2025 16:23

I’m assuming this isn’t just a “feeling cold” thing as the very obvious answer of coats, hats etc was given in the first reply.

Is it a more general not wanting to be out in winter? What do you think it is that you dislike so much?

I don’t mind the cold but I am not a fan of rain. Even then I find that proper water proof clothes - waterproof trousers as well as coat for walks etc - goes a long way.

ilovesooty · 02/12/2025 16:39

I don't like it much either, but if you have to go out, you just have to get on with it. Roll on summer.

EmeraldRoulette · 02/12/2025 16:40

@Mashedpotatodaily I understand

I don't really have a choice about it

Dressing up in four layers, thermals, hat gloves, etc etc just really pisses me off

I don't drive so it's pretty much always walking for me, unless it's just at the bus stop, the train station which to be honest feels like quite a long way away when it's cold.

Also very nervous on an icy pavement following a major injury, which was not related to icy pavement, but makes me unsteady on my feet in normal times.

If I could avoid it, I probably would. I wish I was one of these people who enjoyed walking all weathers, but I am not.

Justploddingonandon · 02/12/2025 16:44

Cold I don't mind, but I do have a long, thick coat. Horizontal rain like yesterday can do one though.

gannett · 02/12/2025 16:51

I'm the same. Obviously I'm aware of coats and gloves and obviously I still go out when I have to, but every single moment of being outdoors in the winter is unenjoyable. Coats and gloves make it just about tolerable, not actively pleasant. Leaving the house becomes such an almighty faff trying to find everything you need to keep the cold/wet out, compared to the summer when you can just sally forth without really thinking.

Raynaud's syndrome doesn't help at all.

DP is consistently surprised that I refuse to countenance going for walks between November and April. I would happily hibernate during the winter and try to mimic it as much as I can as a human. Awful season.

Oh I love running in heatwaves. It's so intense and I love feeling sun and warmth on my skin.

The only good thing about running in the winter is that it motivates me to run faster so I can be back inside sooner. I don't like gyms or treadmills generally but I genuinely consider that option every winter.

ShesTheAlbatross · 02/12/2025 16:54

YANBU. I hate it too. I hate wearing so many layers and it all being so bulky and annoying - I find it all really uncomfortable. And I have literally never found a pair of gloves that have stopped my fingers from freezing in very cold weather.

SarBe · 02/12/2025 21:06

I'm 48 and this is me. I'm just not a winter person

Are you also tired and feeling worn out?

MildlyAnnoyed · 02/12/2025 21:11

I go out because I have to take the dog out lots but I could quite happily hibernate too!

Sally2791 · 02/12/2025 21:34

Hate the dark, but I do think if you dress for the cold and wet it will make you feel better to get out there at least a little bit every day

BeardofHagrid · 02/12/2025 21:40

Today was actually okay but the past two weeks has felt unbearably icy for me, I didn’t want to go out in it either. It’s so bone-chilling, yes even with gloves, scarf etc.

Crushed23 · 02/12/2025 21:40

It’s the combination of cold + dark that makes me want to hibernate. Love going for a walk when it’s bright and sunny, even if it’s freezing - I just wrap up warm.

Lamentingalways · 02/12/2025 21:50

I feel exactly the same and I’m the same age haha.
