Girl Guides are now GIRL ONLY!

1000 replies

Iamwhoiamwhoareyou · 02/12/2025 14:41

Following April's supreme court ruling, the Girl Guides have FINALLY made a statement and will remain GIRLS ONLY - Finally closing the door on admitting trans members or allowing BOYS to invade female only spaces/camp (which, would be done without informing parents that their daughter would be sharing a room with a biological male!) - I have a previous post in feminism chat for anyone wanting to read the previous thread on this

EMAIL RECEIVED HOT OFF THE PRESS 5 MIN AGO -

As the parent of a young member in Girlguiding, following April’s Supreme Court decision relating to sex and gender, we wanted to give you an update. Many organisations across the country have been facing complex decisions about what it means for girls and women and for the wider communities affected, including us.

Girlguiding’s governing charity documents set out that the membership and people who benefit from our organisation are girls and women. In April, the Supreme Court ruled that girls and women are defined in the Equality Act 2010 by their biological sex at birth.
Following detailed considerations, expert legal advice and input from senior members, young members and our Council, Girlguiding’s Board of Trustees has made the difficult decision that Girlguiding must change Girlguiding must change, following the Supreme Court’s ruling.

From today, 2 December, it is with a heavy heart that we are announcing trans girls and young women will no longer be able to join Girlguiding. This is a decision we would have preferred not to make, and we know that this may be upsetting for members of our community.

There will be no immediate changes for current young members but more information will be shared next week.

Most adult roles, including unit helpers, district helpers and administrative support, are already open to all, so we are confident that no volunteers will have to leave the organisation.

Girlguiding believes strongly in our value of inclusion, and we will continue to support young people and adults in marginalised groups. Over the next few months, we'll explore opportunities to champion this value and actively support young people who need us.

You can find our full statement and updated policy on our website.

We are proud to be the UK’s largest youth organisation dedicated to girls and is focused on creating an equal world for girls and young women. For over 100 years, we have been a welcoming space for all girls to have new experiences, support their communities, build friendships and grow their confidence.

While Girlguiding may feel a little different going forward, these core aims and principles will always be the same. We remain committed to treating everyone with dignity and respect, particularly those from marginalised groups that have felt the biggest impact of this decision.

If you have any immediate questions, we have our special support team in place, to give volunteers, parents and carers the best support we can. We are asking Girlguiding HQ, trading and country/region staff to refer any volunteer or parent who has questions about this announcement. Details below.

Contact [email protected] or 020 7532 3970
All calls/emails will be confidential, and the service will be open 24hrs, 7 days a week.

Oddly in my many years in GG, there were no male helpers at all… what would be the point of encouraging girls to be independent if their leaders can’t pitch a tent or drive a mini-van? 🤦🏽‍♀️

OneForTheHoneyTwoForTheSnow · 02/12/2025 16:00

Great news.

user1471538275 · 02/12/2025 16:01

@BoredZelda It's not sad. It's right.

Girl guiding is for girls, not 'trans identifying girls' who are actually boys (or men).

They have other organisations that they can go to and should.

And no, you can't ask the children what they want because you know you can coerce and bully them into doing what you say - you ask the adults, who are more aware of the dangers that certain adults bring and who are legally obliged to safeguard those children.

I’d like quite a bit more detail on how trans identified volunteers will be treated because previously adult males were allowed to supervise changing, showering etc as though they were women

Is this still the case? I have agreed for my two DDs to go on a camp in the spring but I will not send them if it turns out that biological males would be allowed anywhere near them when using toilets, showers etc. As parents we haven't been given any information about this or told that it would be a theoretical possibility.

EdithStourton · 02/12/2025 16:03

Good news - but could they be more grudging?

Hoardasurass · 02/12/2025 16:05

Stillpresent · 02/12/2025 15:03

I would love to see the actual number of people impacted by this? Ie how many guides have to leave because they are trans

You mean how many boys will have to leave the GIRL Guides because they are male not trans.

NoFineBalance · 02/12/2025 16:06

The only people who dare say anything on the matter on the Guides Facebook page are the ones from the "Be kind" brigade. The rest of us who were never in favour of the "inclusive" policy don't post on there on the issue after what happened to Katy Alcock. The only sane voice on there today appears to be Katy!

They haven’t said this has changed

Good.

Girl Guides should be girls, and Boy Scouts should be boys.

Sorted. ✔️

Throckmorton · 02/12/2025 15:05

Indeed. And presumably now the girls who identify as trans, who were excluded before I think, can now join. Win win

Why would they want to?

How far are you going back out of interest. When I joined Girlguiding in my early 20's the dads were often older than me and had grandfather rights on their driving licenses. We had dad's with long wheel base trailers or would be a named driver on the minibuses which mostly had class D requirements. Whilst I did extended driving with Girlguiding which allowed me to drive minibuses I was limited to 3.5t which there weren't many you could hire with that weight limit. Many dads would arrive ahead of the kids and put up Marquees and first aid tents etc. We always had offers each year. To be fair they were generally the dads of just girls who just wanted to be helpful really.

The sad reality is that not enough female volunteers come forward to keep some units going. The male volunteers are almost always “Mr Brown Owl”

Scouts have been fully mixed since 2007 and started accepting girls in 1976.

PhilOPastry62 · 02/12/2025 16:15

I have a lot of sympathy for the trans-identifying boys who joined GirlGuiding having been encouraged to do so by the adults around them - e.g. family, and guide leaders. But it's not so much that they have to leave guides (which I quite see will be a wrench if they have friends and a social life there) but because they've been lied to and encouraged to believe that they can live their lives as though they were the opposite sex. Probably had their 'trans identity' concretised through social transition, making it far harder for their confusion to resolve as adolescence progresses, and making it far more likely they will be lifelong medical patients. The guide leaders who are now weeping and wailing about the organisation's trans-excluding updated policy really have not been doing those boys any favours.

user976534679875 · 02/12/2025 16:15

Devastated for the girls that will now have to leave.

TWETMIRF · 02/12/2025 16:15

It's only boys that will need to leave, no girls.

ThatCyanCat · 02/12/2025 16:16

Oh thank GOD for that. My daughter is still too young for Guides and she might decide she prefers Scouts, but I'm so glad she has the option. I wasn't going to send her somewhere where a bloke could get into her spaces and she gets punished and gaslit when she knows he's a bloke.

I expect the sadness is due to their organisation being seen as inclusive and now they are being told to exclude trans teenage girls. The actual numbers of them are very low, but they have been caught in this ridiculous culture war which makes it seem like there are millions of them predating girls.

It would be interesting to hear the views of the actual girls who have a trans girl in their pack, rather than adults who have no experience of it at all.

And robust safeguarding of children means that it is the adults who organise the groups that have to make the decision based on safeguarding.

It is very poor safeguarding in principle if adults allow children to make the safeguarding decisions based on whether or not they feel ok about something.

ArabellaSaurus · 02/12/2025 16:17

YAS!!!

SunnyViper · 02/12/2025 16:18

Great. I wish scouts would go back to being boy only too.

Moonlightfrog · 02/12/2025 16:19

Good, keep females safe and keep their spaces safe.
