My GP surgery has text me to inform me that I’m duet flu vaccine. I’m going to book myself in.

Will you be having one too?

To start to become effective. Full effectiveness takes longer. I had mine at the end of October and the vaccinator said I’d have full immunity by Christmas, but it would increase from 2 weeks on.

Ah OK, I haven’t heard that one. But I had mine early October so it should be up to full immunity by now then.

I always thought it was about 10-14 days to reach full immunity, and then it slowly start to wane until immunity is lost about 6-8 months later.

You'd think they would start the vaccination programme much earlier if it took 3 months for it to take effect.

The NHS and many other pages agree with you, it takes two weeks.
I don't think it's that you lose the immunity, it's that the circulating flu viruses change and you don't have immunity against the new ones.

RoamingToaster · 03/12/2025 11:09

It's hitting earlier than previous years and could be the worse flu seen in a while. Annoyingly the vaccine isn't the best this year as it was designed in February and the flu mutated in June. It'll still offer some protection though.

New flu virus mutation could see ‘worst season in a decade'

Leading flu experts say they will not be surprised if this year's is the worst flu season for a decade.

I think it's both the mutating virus AND decreasing levels antibodies. Some vaccines last a very long time and some need boosting.

I'm not in an at-risk group but I had mine in the late summer to protect my pregnancy.

soontobeamama · 03/12/2025 12:53

No, because it doesn’t actually stop you catching the flu. It is only supposed to help with one particular strain of flu and even then, it is not guaranteed to prevent you catching it or becoming ill.

pestowithwalnuts · 03/12/2025 12:56

Had mine 3 weeks ago. Having a COVID vac in a couple of weeks.
Iv asked about having a shingles vac but I'm too young..or not the correct criteria
I'm ,70..fgs

Shingles vaccine eligibility for ‘healthy’ (NHS wording) people starts at 70. I’d question that.

BIossomtoes · 03/12/2025 13:29

I had my second shingles vaccination yesterday and feel like shit today. 😞

Maddy70 · 03/12/2025 13:33

Had mine a few weeks ago. Very glad I did

ToffeePennie · 03/12/2025 13:38

Had mine and my Covid too. (Yes I’m one of the “lucky” people with a crappy immune system and heart)

There are 3 or 4 strains of flu in the vaccine. They plan it each year when they predict what the flu season will be like and which will be the predominant strains.

OhDear111 · 03/12/2025 13:44

Had it. Always do and have never actually had flu. A bit of a cold occasionally. Well worth it.

YouveGotNoBloodyIdea · 03/12/2025 13:45

I had mine in September- had flu twice in my life - when I was an otherwise fit and healthy young adult - would not want to go through that again in my 70’s 🥴

Delatron · 03/12/2025 13:51

cardibach · 02/12/2025 17:54

I could t live my life avoiding people! I’m also retired but I’m out doing things all the time. It’s not really an effort. Much easier to do it than faff around avoiding people surely?

Yes agreed and very unhealthy to avoid people and all social interactions.

Socialising has such a positive impact on health.

Delatron · 03/12/2025 13:54

I’ve had mine as this year the flu looks bad and is hitting earlier.

I paid for it at Boots.

I last had a bad bout of flu in 2014 and they say the average person gets it once every 10 years so I reckon I’m due a bout and immunity is running low.

I’m undecided about Covid. I have long Covid and don’t want to aggravate anything and the evidence is mixed for this. Though I’d really like to avoid Covid again now I’ve seen what it can do..

CustardySergeant · 03/12/2025 13:59

I've had mine.

Delatron · 03/12/2025 15:08

I’m hoping it peaks early this year and then burns itself out (could be wishful thinking). They seemed to give the school vaccine earlier this year (October) versus Jan. I guess they saw what happened in the southern hemisphere and wanted to be more prepared.

tigger1001 · 03/12/2025 15:11

Had mine at the weekend

YelramBob · 03/12/2025 15:20

I had my first one two years ago as I was having chemo at the time. Didn't bother last year but my immune system hasn't been the same since and after reading all the horror stories I had mine yesterday. Going for a covid jab on Friday too.

I'm feeling sad about it as prior to the chemo I hadn't even had a cold for 12 years but I don't want to get sick this winter 🤒
