Neighbour I barely know said she’ll give Christmas present if I take her parcel?

MayaJohnson · 01/12/2025 20:44

Just wondering if this is a bit odd.

this neighbour I saw maybe 2 times in my life. Once parcel accidentally delivered to our home, she came to collect, once delivery man left her parcel with us. Don’t know her at all. Never even said hi to her outside these two times.

today she knocked on my door. I wasn’t home and my kid didn’t open the door. Later in corridor when she sees me she goes I ordered Royal Mail delivery for tomorrow can you buzz them them in and hold my parcel for me? I go oh umm ok. (Confused also how she so sure I’ll be home tomorrow)

she goes I will collect it

then as I am leaving she goes I’ll get you a Christmas present! I go uhm, not a problem

She once again goes I’ll get you a Christmas present since you been so nice!

i was in a hurry so just went it’s not a problem again.

Nothing wrong with that! They’re just being kind as you’ll be helping them out!

Fends · 01/12/2025 20:45

Eh? She asked you if you could do her a favour, you said yes, she said she will get you a gift by way of thanks.

What’s so odd about that?

OhDonuts · 01/12/2025 20:46

I’d say it’s just normal neighbourly pleasantries and that she was joking about the Christmas present, but also acknowledging she realises she might be putting you out.
If she gets something it will probably chocolates or wine I expect.
I think you are overthinking things.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 01/12/2025 20:46

It’s nice to have friendly neighbours and she sounds like one. I’m sure it will just be a bottle of wine or something

Bobiverse · 01/12/2025 20:47

What’s the issue? I honestly don’t know why you’ve started a thread.

You don’t need to know each other, you’re neighbours and she’s asked if you could take in a parcel since you’ve done it a couple times (even if only because the delivery guys left it with you). And she said she’d get you something just to be nice and say thanks.

Seriously, what is it you think is odd here? You’ve had an entirely normal, every day encounter.

PatThePenguin · 01/12/2025 20:49

Depends on the present really.

Box of chocolates = Fine

Clitoral suction air pulse stimulating vibrator = Odd

MayaJohnson · 01/12/2025 20:49

I just don’t understand why she feels the need to get me Christmas present for something so small and me seeing her twice in my life? I feel uncomfortable accepting it

husband said I should of said no

idk maybe I’m overthinking

I had a neighbour hand me 10 pound note last week for keeping her parcel?

I said no it’s fine and she just said TAKE IT and put it my hand and walked off.

Friendly neighbours are priceless and you never know when you may need a favour in return. Nothing weird here, she sounds nice

I think I want to swap houses with you - your neighbours sound great!! My neighbours are antisocial and unfriendly!

I think it’s probably the time of year, people do sometimes become more thankful/generous at Christmas.
Be grateful for the type of neighbours you have.

Daisy12Maisie · 01/12/2025 20:53

My neighbour stole our food delivery parcel directly after my mum died and getting to the shops was an issue as everything was a blur.
So maybe she was just glad that you are normal and nice. She may have been joking about the present or she may get you something small as a thank you. I don’t think that’s weird.

MayaJohnson · 01/12/2025 20:54

One neighbour handed me 10 pound note last week for this

another a few months ago a box of chocolates with card in my post box

another last year left dd a card with some money

and now this one saying I’ll give you Christmas gift

don’t get me wrong I’m it’s all nice but

if just feels all too much just for me taking their parcel once or twice??

I’m calling bullshit. No way have 3 different neighbours brought you gifts or given you money. Unless there is a big drip feed coming that they know you’re in poverty or a domestic abuse situation

gamerchick · 01/12/2025 20:57

I'm imagining a large flat pack box that's going to take over the hallway here.

That’s exactly why I made this thread

i took in their parcel it’s not like I saved their house from a fire

people are asking me on here why I made it. My friends and mum say they don’t get why I’m unhappy about this. Said they are jealous neighbours are nice

if it was just this one lady but it’s third time already

first two times it was nice now it’s just odd?

my husband also thinks it’s very weird. Something odd going on?

he said I shouldn’t accept anything anymore

The only way I think there could be more to it is if you are living in obvious poverty - but again that would have been done out of kindness.
Or, the other possibility is the first neighbour has gone around blowing their own trumpet that they had “kindly” given you something for taking parcels in and now they are all competing with each other to be the most thankful/generous neighbour!

Either way it sounds like a win for you.

Right. Well it’s impossible to say since you change the story with every update.

What did I change in the story?

last year given 5 pound with thank you note, didn’t think anything of it.

then this year in last 5 months given gifts. First time it was ok/nice, second time different neighbour it was kind of odd. Now this neighbour says I’ll give you gift. Now I’m confused and weirded out

My neighbours are weirdly nice too, it's loverly but feels so strange having never had friendly neighbours before moving here. In the summer I was packing the car to take the kids on holiday, three different neighbours noticed, came to chat & wish us well, then stood on their drives to wave us off. Loverly but odd non the less. No presents here but lots of Christmas cards along the lines of "dear no27, best wishes from no35"

GreenFritillary · 02/12/2025 18:47

I've had this happen with two neighbours. I refused to take anything from them, saying that I liked them but all I wanted was to know that we were all ready to be good neighbours to each other when needed, which makes us all feel a bit more secure in our homes. Another neighbour backed me up emphatically. We had to explain it several times but we got it clearly established in the end.

Daftypants · 02/12/2025 19:13

I’d accept , it’s probably only a small box of Hotel Chocolat 😉
Joking aside , she probably feels she’s inconvenienced you because you’re taking a few parcels in .

Pertinentowl · 02/12/2025 19:31

When I got scammed on Airbnb, my sisters neighbours let us stay in their house for free. A new one they hadn’t got furniture for yet. We slept on blow up mattresses. They saved us millions of pounds in London in July.

so there are very kind people, OP.

I wish they hadn’t moved actually, I would have liked them as friends
