Neighbour I barely know said she’ll give Christmas present if I take her parcel?

Just wondering if this is a bit odd.

this neighbour I saw maybe 2 times in my life. Once parcel accidentally delivered to our home, she came to collect, once delivery man left her parcel with us. Don’t know her at all. Never even said hi to her outside these two times.

today she knocked on my door. I wasn’t home and my kid didn’t open the door. Later in corridor when she sees me she goes I ordered Royal Mail delivery for tomorrow can you buzz them them in and hold my parcel for me? I go oh umm ok. (Confused also how she so sure I’ll be home tomorrow)

she goes I will collect it

then as I am leaving she goes I’ll get you a Christmas present! I go uhm, not a problem

She once again goes I’ll get you a Christmas present since you been so nice!

i was in a hurry so just went it’s not a problem again.

I would think it's probably just something she's saying to keep you sweet tbh.

TY78910 · 02/12/2025 20:02

I think she’s already decided to give you a neighbourly Christmas present (the parcel is just an excuse’ and she’s making it clear as she’s expecting one back 🤣

And???

Endorewitch · 03/12/2025 00:38

You say it has happened 3 times with different neighbours. One gave you £5. This seems odd. Are you the only one who takes in parcels? If not I wonder if they always give presents to others fir doing this.
Once is not remarkable. Just a friendly gesture. More than one I would politely refuse.

HeddaGarbled · 03/12/2025 00:49

Oh bless her, she’s worried about being a nuisance.

IcyPuddles · 03/12/2025 00:51

Epic levels of overthinking.

If she offers you a gift, accept it, thank her, and move on.

Friendlygingercat · 03/12/2025 00:56

I hope this is not a preamble to her as nominating you as the parcel depot for her packages in the future. There have been so many threads where the OP had taken in an odd parcel and the number began to increase to several a week. Then they found out that a cheeky neighbour had nominated them as their depivery point with several platforms. Give some people an inch and they take a mile.

Ferrissia3 · 03/12/2025 00:58

Some people feel enormously uncomfortable asking for favours and often overcompensate with thanks. Its a self esteem issue issue for the most part. Take the parcels or don't. Accept the thank you gifts or don't.

Just try to avoid having 'sinister motives' being your first port of call when trying to understand why people behave differently to you.

Noname63 · 03/12/2025 07:55

I think I’d be wondering what was in the parcels! 🤣

I just don’t understand why she feels the need to get me Christmas present for something so small and me seeing her twice in my life? I feel uncomfortable accepting it

husband said I should of said no

idk maybe I’m overthinking

Yes, you're definitely overthinking!!!!

MayaJohnson · 03/12/2025 15:22

Well she came today and brought me very nice bottle of wine, huge box of sweets and candles.

I said I never got your parcel she said I got it, it’s fine. They delivered to her.

my husband told me off for taking it and thanking her. said I shouldn’t of accepted it.

Said that’s too much for simply taking in parcel, should have refused.

You are totally overthinking. Just be happy that you have such lovely neighbours! Accept graciously with a smile and a thank you 🙂.

It will make them happy to know they have done a nice thing to somebody.

If someone has bought you a gift, even if you think it’s unwarranted or disproportionate, it’s ruder not to accept it and shove their kindness back in their face.

PaulineMush · 03/12/2025 15:55

Well, next time she tries to give you anything just shout "fuck off you weirdo cunt", throw it to the floor and piss on it then.

ETA: ...or just, you know, say "thank you, that's so kind of you"

MayaJohnson · 01/12/2025 21:30

What did I change in the story?

last year given 5 pound with thank you note, didn’t think anything of it.

then this year in last 5 months given gifts. First time it was ok/nice, second time different neighbour it was kind of odd. Now this neighbour says I’ll give you gift. Now I’m confused and weirded out

Edited

Did you start threads about being given money? Tbh that’s a lot stranger than being given a box of chocs for doing someone a favour!

I would feel uncomfortable accepting such a generous gift for no reason as it would make me think ‘where will this end? Does she expect a gift from me now?’ but wouldn’t think much more of it since it’s one occasion
however you’ve described this as a pattern of different neighbours giving you gifts of money and also mentioned your husband ‘telling you off’ more than once. Could this be a situation where a group of them are aware of something not quite right at home and are feeling sorry for you or wanting to help but not wanting to state the reason why?

MayaJohnson · 24/12/2025 00:44

Well looks like I was right to feel uncomfortable

(I took in parcel she told me was coming)

But today she knocked on my door and asked why I didn’t take another new parcel in. (She didn’t tell about this one)

she went so how was the gift I gave you? I said it was lovely, thank you!

she went so anyway, I ordered another parcel, I know the delivery man was in the building but you didn’t take in my parcel? Why didn’t you take it in?

someone doesn’t take a delivery, the obvious reasons are:

  • They weren’t home
  • They didn’t hear it

why knock on my door and question me!? (which I didn’t appreciate as I was working and busy too)

then, we took in her parcel a day later.

she didn’t come to collect it for days and then knocked at 8am in the morning to get it.

(even though she comes home from work at 3pm and knows I’m home at this time)

Oh and I’ve been having huge parcels coming in everyday.

ds also told me she questioned him in corridor why we missed one of her parcels

she also told ds that we need to “try our best“ and “really listen“ for a knock not to miss it and “try so that at least one person is always home” because she will feel “very sad“ and “disappointed” and ”let down” and her Christmas/her day will be ruined if she doesn’t get her parcel.

like what

I wouldn’t accept a gift as I wouldn’t want to be her default parcel person. I’d just say “ if I’m in I’ll take it but obviously I can’t guarantee I’ll be home so probably best to make other arrangements if it’s important”

Sotodayisthestartofit · 16/02/2026 05:50

It sounds like you have a really nice neighbours OP

Whilst it probably seems a bit weird to you, I think it all sounds rather nice strangely. Better nice ones than awful ones.
