I think it is . Why make this decision at a time when anti semitism is increasing?

I think in your last paragraph you’ve made your antisemitism loud and clear for all to see.

Shame on you for your lack of concern for a minority group in Irish society . They are citizens in your country. Shame on you for your ignorance and denial of the problems they are facing .

You're hilarious

"beleaguered Irish Jewish community"

Struggling to think of one of my Jewish friends or family members who feels beleaguered. 🤣 Do you even live in Ireland ??

They always have Jewish friends or relatives…

of course the residents of the salubrious Rathgar are beleaguered by tacky flag bearing rage-baiters. It brings the tone down substantially.

It’s funny how the poster who cares so little about the Irish Jewish community has Jewish friends AND family members 🧐

No - in that post I was insinuating you are not being completely truthful about your “Jewish friends and family members” .
( Sadly - I don’t find you amusing )

What does Israel have to do with Ophelia's comment about the Jewish community in Ireland ir Rachel Moiselle's experience as a Jew in Ireland?

What makes you think I'm not being truthful

How so?

Mintypanda · 08/12/2025 19:58

Baseline probability of being Irish with Jewish friends AND relatives is extremely low, for starters.

Second, it’s a trump card people tend to pull out of the bag on forums like this that smacks of the old “Some of my best friends are Jews” trope

Greysowhat · 08/12/2025 19:54

You find the concerns of the Irish Jewish community amusing / hilarious or “a gas”
That was one of the giveaways

Theres no need for anyone to insinuate anything is there? You've openly posted Holocaust Inversion and haven't taken it back. Highly doubt you've any Jewish friends or relatives, they'd have pulled you up in no time.
I'm not a racist I have lots of black friends 🙄sure sure

Always worth considering in such a situation that even if one does have friends from a particular community, that isn't sufficient reason to presume their experiences are representative, let alone determinative. In the case of Irish Jews, there's over 2000 of them. I doubt there's one person even inside the community who knows the majority, let alone outside it.

Now you've made it sound like being Irish and having Jewish friends is in itself antisemitic

JaneJeffer · 08/12/2025 21:21

Nobody in Ireland says “a gas”; it’s gas.

That would be relevant if this was a thread about Irish idioms.

Well, I probably know a lot of the Irish Jewish Community. Certainly not everyone.

If there are 2000 Jews (prob more like 3000) there are 2000 opinions. :)

Anyway, as you might guess from my user name I live in Ireland and I am Jewish. Actually in salubrius Rathgar.

I think beleagured is a good way to describe how we feel. Look, Irish people are lovely and friendly and kind and there are wonderful people. I have experienced very very little overt antisemitism. But I know college students who will hide they are Jewish, school kids ditto, people who feel lonely and isolated at work, others who have lost lifelong friends since October 7th.

And the Irish government are so one sided its awful. I have a deep loathing for President Higgins after the way he acted at HMD, and let me tell you, as a Jewish person who was at that event and walked out (2 of my friends were dragged out) I am still waiting in vain for an apology from SOMEONE about that.

Do you know how it feels when everyone in the country thinks Higgins is a saint and you just feel like you live on another planet?

Punam Rane (local councillar for Rathgar who has lots of Jewish neigbours) is still a member of Fine gael despite saying at a DCC meeting that the “entire US economy is ruled by the Jews, by Israel”

In what other country would that sort of bigotry be tolerated?. And she is a member of the party that is perceived as being the least antisemitic.

Jewishcraic · 08/12/2025 22:47

And if I am only a 'good Jew' if I denounce Israels right to exist, than yes, you are an antisemite.

Have you seen a Jewish prayer book? The yearning for the return to Israel is on every page. Its difficult to be a committed Jew and not a supporter of Israel.

Or you know, they might feel upset that their Jewish neighbours are being made to feel unwelcome.

BTW Herzog Park is not very visible. You have to know its there. Its hidden away behind houses. Theres not even a signpost pointing to it.

Lived just outside Rathgar for several years so I’m familiar with its location and appearance.

Thanks @Jewishcraic
It’s much more helpful to hear your perspective than the silly back and forth that has gone on here ( I’m going to try not to reply to goady posts any more)

I truly believe most Irish are fair minded but some events ( such as the incident you describe over the Holocaust memorial and Higgins) have caused great hurt and concern to many ( if not all) Irish Jewish people.
