AIBU that now is the time for us to get behind Kemi?

Rachel Reeves has broken her promise that new taxes would not be levied on working people. She hasn’t followed through with her promise to prioritise growth. She failed to deliver welfare reform. It is clear that the current government is now led by the newly elected backbenchers. Labour are punishing those of us who work and save, taxing our pensions and making life more expensive for working families. She is making it more difficult for employers to hire staff and graduates in particular are suffering from a lack of opportunity due to her policies.

Keir Starmer failed to get any support for welfare reform from his backbenchers and is coasting politically.

Both Rachel and Keir have shown that political survival means more to them than delivering a budget that grows the economy and helps those of us who work hard and aspire for more. I feel that they hate people like me and my family- we are professionals on two good wages with children, not rich, middle class, trying to improve our lives, prepare for our futures while trying to pay the bills. There is literally nothing in this budget which would help people like me, only punishment (or a ‘contribution’ as Rachel Reeves described it in her budget speech).

Yes, the tories screwed up massively under Boris and Truss. But everything that Kemi is saying about the autumn budget is spot on. Kemi also stood up for women at a time when Labour was gaslighting women across the country in relation to trans issues.

The conservatives have a huge amount of work to do to rebuild trust and develop their policies. But if they don’t gain public support we are risking the chaos of a Reform government. AIBU to say that now is the time to get behind Kemi?

We've only got into this mess because of the Conservatives spending too much and then doing the Liz Truss budget. It'll take ages to replay all the debt so no. Aside from which I don't like her as a personality and wouldn't want her to be PM. Farage also, both vile. I'd take Ed Davey or Zac Polanski above those two.

StarlightRobot · 27/11/2025 17:30

@Chocolatebunny61

I agree with you about Rishi Sunak but it would have been difficult to deliver some of the changes that are needed for welfare reform as he is so wealthy- it would look like a rich and out of touch person inflicting harm on the poor. That may be an unfair criticism but politically it could seem that way. He was also tainted by the Johnson years. I think he is a good person.

I would take her over Rayner or Reeves any day tbh.

@Annielou67

I agree that the country is in dire straits right now, but it doesn’t need to stay this way. Economies can grow. There are many success stories around the world where economies were in a terrible condition but their prosperity was turned around. We don’t need to stop trying or give up. Greece is a great example of this. See: https://www.imf.org/en/publications/fandd/issues/2025/06/greeces-remarkable-recovery-konstantinos-hatzidakis

I agree that we shouldn’t stop trying, but a small group of people ( let’s call them the rich, because that’s who they are) ( I’m talking billionaires) now own all our assets. They own the government debt, our mortgages , businesses etc. It is the same throughout Europe - the model is failing. Comparing us to Greece is frankly ridiculous. We grind away expecting ever changing governments to make a difference. They aren’t going to- our welfare state, government jobs and pensions, and the NHS are not going to survive this. We are in denial. What to do - somehow we have to stop the wheel.

So why is welfare going to expand so much? I see this over and over “the tories messed it up it’s going to take ages to fix”. So we massively expand welfare and go for zero growth form the private sector?

It’s all incompetence.

I also wonder what those who are disillusioned with Labour but still furious with the Tories will do. My worry is that they will vote Reform or Green as protest votes, risking yet more instability. I would love to hear from people in those camps.

Edited

I will vote LibDem as I did last time. Not much chance of my vote having an impact but I’d love the LibDems to be in VC a coalition with Labour and/or the Greens. Do t agree with every policy but on balance I’d be happy.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 27/11/2025 17:12

I’d rather have the Greens than Reform or Kemi.

Yes, but that's highly unlikely so we do have to be realistic. No good discussing what you would hope for and if you dislike Labour's current policies, I suggest you go and have a good look at the Green's, because theirs is mental

StarlightRobot · 27/11/2025 17:39

@Bringemout

I think it’s worse than incompetence- Starmer and Reeves know that the welfare bill needs to be reduced but they backtracked when the backbenchers opposed it. They have now put forward a budget that is the opposite of their promises for growth and not to increase taxation due to the threat of mutiny in the party. It is a combination of dishonesty and cowardice.

Remind yourself why we are in this mess

from the great council house sell off through Brexit , the destruction of the NHS and the Covid party the tories have never done me any favours

Pollqueen · 27/11/2025 17:39

My favourite Green idea for combatting traffic congestion in Brighton was to let sheep roam free on the roads during rush hour because that would force drivers to slow down. Fucking genius 🤗

mbosnz · 27/11/2025 17:52

Yeah. Nah. I'm another one who would have to have indisputable evidence that hell was freezing over.

SpaceRaccoon · 27/11/2025 17:58

Love Kemi and I hope to see her as next UK PM.

Datchydoo · 27/11/2025 18:09

I thought Kemi’s post budget speech was fantastic. I support her

Interesting to look at Kemi's voting record. She voted against a reduction in spending on welfare benefits (twice) and for raising benefits in line with prices (2021/22).

hmmnotreallysure · 27/11/2025 18:13

Have you forgotten the shit show that the last conservative government created??!! Not a chance!!

That is very interesting!

Kemi Badenoch's voting record on the environment is appalling.

  • voted against measures to prevent climate change
  • voted against financial incentives for low carbon emission electricity generation methods
  • Voted against greater regulation of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to extract shale gas
  • voted for new high speed rail infrastructure
  • voted against the preservation of environmental protections after withdrawal from the EU
  • Consistently voted against improving biodiversity
  • Consistently voted against improving air quality
  • Consistently voted against improving environmental water quality
  • Consistently voted against increasing windfall tax on oil and gas companies

I appreciated her response to the chancellor's claim of misogyny
‘Let me explain to the Chancellor, woman to woman. People out there aren’t complaining because she’s female. They’re complaining because she is utterly incompetent. Real equality means being held to the same standard as everyone else.’

That really is so far from the legal definition of equality - it just shows how utterly ridiculous the woman is . . .

SeaAndStars · 27/11/2025 18:17

Kemi Badenoch generally voted against laws to promote equality and human rights.

goodtogarden · 27/11/2025 18:28

She is very aggressive/vitriolic, she also takes great pride in the fact that she was a "tell-tale" at school, which is very odd.
However the chances of her ever being elected as PM are zero so I'm happy for her to stay as Tory leader for as long as possible.

cloudtreecarpet · 27/11/2025 18:28

Absolutely not! I thought her post-budget speech was vile actually.

The Tories decimated this country while in power. They wasted money hand over fist, mishandled Covid, left us with Brexit & helped create an increasingly selfish & divided society where people have a very skewed idea of what "wealthy" is.
If I read another "sob story" from someone on over £100k whining about how badly done by they are I will lose it.

StarlightRobot · 27/11/2025 18:28

@SeaAndStars Which laws? We already have strong equality and human rights laws in the UK. I see the reasons for reforming the ECHR

@StarlightRobot said "Yes, the tories screwed up massively under Boris and Truss."

Thinking also outside of Johnson and Truss's tenure, what are the key Conservative achievements during the period 2010- 2024?

I've been thinking in terms of house building targets, health, covid response, introduction of the triple lock (how's that panning out), Brexit outcomes, handling austerity, child poverty, health, legislation around gender, immigration etc. To be honest it's all looking a bit thin.

Why would anyone want more of that?

Just demanding more taxes won’t do much. Needing more every year and hammering growth.
