I guess this won’t be shouted about in the news. Such a good thing

They're fudging the figures to show how they're finally doing something and listening to the British public concerns. It's bs. High earners are emigrating and being replaced by deliveroo drivers, waiting staff and taxi drivers. Fabulous, just want the country needs! and the tired old trope that the nhs would collapse without immigration is of each successive governments making - increase the number of training places for newly qualified doctors and the problem would be solved, with no need to recruit foreign workers. Finally people are waking up to the propaganda that's been pushed upon us for decades. They really do think we're stupid.

Yes. Just heard BBC crowing about the drop in net migration. Presenter Sarah Montague (salary approx £250,000 pa) suggested that given these figures, that people need to 'calm down' about immigration.

NO mention that the drop in net migration is partly made up of talented, skilled Brits leaving the country. The media class must think we're really stupid.

How would you solve this?

But the point is they won't be working in highly skilled jobs when they arrive. So we are losing higher rate taxpayers in return for low rate taxpayers. You can try to argue it however you want but the data is the data and it specifically says "lower skilled immigrant workers"

So as the jobs are freed up the people coming in can take those positions and pay higher taxes..

averylongtimeago · 27/11/2025 14:29

If we are worried about a change in the demographics of the country and the falling birth rate, the UK needs to make it more attractive for its people to have children, especially well educated professionals. The cost of childcare is enormous, the cost of housing, lack of tax breaks for families this is all part of the reason for smaller families.
Yes we do need some immigration to fill gaps, we also need to work out how to keep home grown Drs ect here.

What we don’t need are thousands of ill educated young men who have a totally different culture and values and who only want to come to the uk because it’s seen as paved with gold that you don’t have to work for.
The young men I met at my language class (all from Africa who had been shipped to our local town after The jungle at Calais had been cleared a few years ago) told me when I asked why they didn’t want to stay in France (where they got more money from the government than they would in the uk at that time) that in the uk they would get lots of money, a house and a car from the government and a new wife, because English girls are easy.
Out of the 2 dozen who arrived, half had disappeared within weeks and out of the rest, almost all ended up being deported. Only one or two were prepared to do the work to learn the language and integrate.
They were not bad lads, all aged between mid teens to 30, but they had no transferable skills, and had a totally different mindset. Most wouldn’t speak to women and found the idea that women are equal shocking.

In a lower skilled occupation does not necessarily mean they are lower skilled. You may have a Doctor or Engineer who is doing any job to keep body and soul together.

Also, 60% in lower skilled jobs - what % of British people are in lower skilled jobs, I wonder? It can be that all British people are in high skilled jobs, surely?

I think one of the biggest problems of our time is that assertions become facts very quickly, with no proof. It may be, as suggested, that the emigration we’re seeing is all highly skilled workers and they’re being replaced by low skilled. But no one on this thread seems to know if that’s actually the case.

How if they dont have the skills needed? We are losing high skilled individuals and replacing them with low skilled.....the point about high skills level has passed you by?
We are losing doctors and getting delivery drivers..........

smallglassbottle · 27/11/2025 14:30

So we're swapping skilled people for unskilled, possibly criminal people who may or may not pay tax and who cost the country money anyway.

Great. The country will be thriving in no time 🙄

Ohpleeeease · 27/11/2025 14:32

Does this also include the 110,000 applications from asylum seekers in the year to June 2025? Those are 14% up in the last year.

Because who are more able to afford to move abroad? Low or high skilled? 🤔

There is no data to track the skills level of people leaving but it's pretty much common sense. We KNOW UK citizen doctors are leaving.

My original point that you quoted was that many do but are taking low skilled jobs until they secure a higher paying one that utilises their skills better.

arriving.

I highly doubt 400k people have left. So it’ll be a fall in immigration

I agree I don’t think it’s 400k that have left. But a lot of professionals in my circle have immigrated in the last 18 months.

Nothankyov · 27/11/2025 14:37

Snorlaxo · 27/11/2025 11:00

What kind of people are leaving? I suspect that it’s tax paying professionals and Brits rather than men arriving on boats.

Edited

I completely agree with this. We have left and quite a few of our friends have as well. I still miss the UK but it was the best decision for my family.

The data says 255K British nationals left between March 24-March 25 plus obviously more from April 25- now

Net migration has decreased from 649,000 to 204,000 in the year to June 2025

My original point that you quoted was that many do but are taking low skilled jobs until they secure a higher paying one that utilises their skills better.

And in that time they are only contributing the bare minimum whilst using the public services. So even if they do eventually get higher paying jobs, there is a severe lag between the higher tax payers leaving + immigrants working their way up to higher paying jobs. In that time lag they are putting pressure on public services but not paying for them. Whereas the higher taxpayers who have left are less likely to have used the full suite of public services especially healthcare/education.

Surely you see the issue?

Do you have the data on what % go on to become higher rate taxpayers?

I have to say I’m not surprised. We left July 2024 and 7 couples that we are friends with have left as well. One that remained is seriously considering it. My husband has 2 other colleagues at work in the uk that have reached out to see if they can get a job where he has moved to. It’s bound to happen. It’s sad for the uk but people have to make the best decisions for them.

Unescorted · 27/11/2025 14:45

If the immigrant has the skills as they come over (which many do) and the job becomes vacant because of the incumbent emigrated the job at that pay scale is still there for the immigrant to do and be paid for. Unless you are suggesting that immigrants should not be paid the same for the same job....

twistyizzy · 27/11/2025 14:48

There is a reason the top schools in UK are opening branches in Dubai/UAE. There is a huge demand from people leaving the UK and taking their families.

Yes. I wonder why the BBC didn't include this in their report? Net migration going down is good news but if a significant part of that is talented Brits leaving and taking their assets with them, then it's bad news.

Having nearly a million NEETS who we have to pay benefits to while swapping skilled Brits for low skilled migrants is bad news and the govt need to get a grip.

So a UK doctor leaves and a low skilled immigrant can just upskill themselves?
You really don't understand the demographics here. I am out now. But yeh sure it's really easy to replace all of the highly skilled + high earners who are leaving UK. Their jobs can just be filled my newly arrived immigrants. Problem solved!
I give up.

Many immigrants have high skills . They are qualified to do the high skill jobs. Many do low skilled jobs because they need to eat. They do not lose those skills when they take a temporary job. So when the job becomes available they can do it because they have the skills.

I am not sure I can make it any simpler for you.

What are the statistics for highly skilled migrants coming over and securing long term skilled employment vs low skilled or non working migrants?

No idea but you don't uproot everything you know and at great expense to sweep the streets or deliver food by bike as the pinicle of career progression
