To be excited about downsizing

Shedeboodinia · 26/11/2025 17:32

Were downsizing.
Kids still small and at home.
We are going from 4 double bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, to 2 double bedrooms.

Things I am excited about:

  • knocking 150 off my council tax
  • reducing my energy and water bills
  • having 1 toilet to clean, not 4
  • havong less places to tidy
  • getting rid of a load of crap we store for no reason
  • spending more time in the living room as a family and not in our bedrooms
  • less space to hoover
  • less stuff everywhere
  • less cupboards full of crap
  • only one bathroom to clean
  • heating the house quicker
  • being more cozy
  • having more disposable income
  • no hige garden to care for
  • saving.. finally

Am I being unreasonable to be excited?

How far off from move in date?

same location?

backatchababy · 26/11/2025 17:36

We downsized 4 years ago when our kids were teenagers. Best thing we’ve ever done Thought you’d be amazed at the number of people that thought we were bonkers as they were very much still at the stage where they had aspirations of buying the bigger/better forever home.

Our work / life balance is so much better and I now have a job I enjoy.
Good luck, OP. Hope it goes well.

24Dogcuddler · 26/11/2025 17:36

Sounds like a good plan! We downsized in Summer just us 2 and 2 dogs now.
Had weeks of refurbishing but loving only cleaning one bathroom not 3, lower running costs etc.
Enjoy the extra time and more disposable income.

Runblebun · 26/11/2025 17:38

So children now sharing from having own bedrooms

Seems very short sighted. 2 children? Same sex? Planning for them to share as teens?

CandyCaneKisses · 26/11/2025 17:43

I downsized and hated it so upsized again.

Less space might mean less cleaning but it means you’re more cramped, have less personal space and privacy as the kids grow.

Zempy · 26/11/2025 17:45

Don’t forget all the money you can make on Vinted from selling your unwanted crap.

I downsized seven years ago and am so happy in my little house with a much higher disposable income.

Good luck!

Shedeboodinia · 26/11/2025 18:14

I think we will upsize again in a few years tbh. But I am excited about the downsizing for now!

Well that’s daft
paying stamp duty again and all the fees ans associated costs

Runblebun · 26/11/2025 18:16

How old are you children and how many?

We rent!

You say 'we', so you won't be the only person doing all that housework, surely?

Runblebun · 26/11/2025 18:21

Shedeboodinia · 26/11/2025 18:17

We rent!

4 to 2 bedrooms
4 toilets to 1 toilet

how many children and how old?!

Judeyoubigtwat · 26/11/2025 18:21

Oh if you are renting, sod it, move again in a few years. We had to move 3 times in 8 years when we were renting due to rent increases and land lords selling up.

It obviously entails some costs, but not as much as buying and selling.

Helpmefindmysoul · 26/11/2025 18:23

Would downsize in terms of size but not to less toilets ever.

But if it’s the right decision for you wishing you all the best!

ShaunaOfTheDead · 26/11/2025 18:23

Good on you. Better to live within your means and enjoy life (or save money).

Fewer toilets

Shedeboodinia · 26/11/2025 18:28

Runblebun · 26/11/2025 18:21

4 to 2 bedrooms
4 toilets to 1 toilet

how many children and how old?!

2 x same sex, 7 and 10.
We tend to sleep all jumbled up anyway, noone ends up in their original beds by morning.

Then it doesn't really matter where you live.

Well it will be less toilets for me to clean. Less sinks. Less baths. Less showers.

Hummm…
I hope it works out.
my kids loved having their own bedroom and more than one toilet…. Just saying.

onetwothreeweeeeeeeee · 26/11/2025 18:35

We are downsizing too in a month. I am sooooooo excited about having a huge clear out and having less possessions to worry about. It feels like a huge weight is about to be lifted.

Really? At those ages?

Fewer toilets

Thank you for correcting my grammar Miss! 😊

I would never move to a house with fewer toilets.

onetwothreeweeeeeeeee · 26/11/2025 18:49

Also, not to put a downer on the thread… but we used to live in a 2 bed flat where my two had to share and we all spent a lot of time together. We then moved to give them their own rooms. Which then meant my son spent a lot of time in his new big bedroom and hardly any time in the living room. Which meant I didn’t then notice when he decided to end his life. He had told me previously how much happier he was when we lived in the flat. But I thought I had to give them their own rooms and that I was a terrible mother if not.

Obviously the odds are that not all children with their own rooms will do something so permanent and tragic, but what I am trying to say is that you shouldn’t worry about what Mumsnet standards are in terms of size of house and number of bathrooms, and instead do what feels right for your family.
