To be excited about downsizing

Were downsizing.
Kids still small and at home.
We are going from 4 double bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, to 2 double bedrooms.

Things I am excited about:

  • knocking 150 off my council tax
  • reducing my energy and water bills
  • having 1 toilet to clean, not 4
  • havong less places to tidy
  • getting rid of a load of crap we store for no reason
  • spending more time in the living room as a family and not in our bedrooms
  • less space to hoover
  • less stuff everywhere
  • less cupboards full of crap
  • only one bathroom to clean
  • heating the house quicker
  • being more cozy
  • having more disposable income
  • no hige garden to care for
  • saving.. finally

Am I being unreasonable to be excited?

Yanbu.

I currently live in a 4 bed, 3 bathroom detached.. but I still miss my lovely 3 bed, 1 bathroom mid-terrace.

Everything was easier and cheaper to clean and maintain. However, now that the kids are all very much bigger I'd really struggle to fit them in the terrace again, and washing in the morning would be impossible.

Difficult to vote, as YANBU to feel excited about the next chapter in your life, which you've decided is the right move for you

BUT

Unless I needed to, I wouldn't choose to make my dc go from having a bedroom each to having to share. I am completely aware lots of siblings share (as I did growing up until I left home, and as my dc did until we were able to more to a bigger house), but it seems an odd thing to make them do unless you financially have to.

Fair enough since renting. I was going to say it seems a bit premature to move to a 2 bed with multiple kids who will want their own space as they grow. But you can move again when it suits without stamp duty etc. Good luck! Hope you’re new home is the setting of many, many happy memories yet to be made.

@onetwothreeweeeeeeeeeOh God, I am so sorry to hear about your boy. Sending the biggest of hugs. x

I’m the complete opposite. Our house has just gone under offer and we’re upsizing. 😆 It’s just the two of us now and our house has increased in value to the extent that we can buy a much better and larger house just a couple of miles further out from where we are. We’ve always loved having lots of space but have filled up our house over the 39 years we’ve been here.

Smaller can be cosier, editing your life and getting rid of an overload of excess belongings is really freeing. Running up and down 3 floors or whatever can be exhausting and Im of the belief it encourages you to buy more stuff you may not really need. All the things you mentioned make it right for you, you sound like you have it sussed, good luck.

Small homes are hard to keep clean as everyone and everything is on top of everyone else.

I think we will upsize again in a few years tbh. But I am excited about the downsizing for now!

What a waste of money.

Theresabatinmykitchen · 27/11/2025 18:14

Just seen you rent so not the same.

Tryingatleast · 27/11/2025 18:16

We live in a big old old bungalow. I dream of the 2 bed flat we once lived in where cleaning took an hour or two. A week of cleaning here still doesn’t look like you’ve cleaned!!! Congratulations op!

I can totally understand about being excited about the cost reduction and less cleaning. But I’m not sure on your decision to move ten and seven year olds from their own rooms to sharing and only having one toilet between all 4 of you. We moved to a bigger house when our kids were 10 and 7 and have found it to be much better (kids are different sexes and now 13 and 10). We will downsize when they leave home and I will look forward to less cleaning for sure!

All of those things applied to me when I downsized. I’m so happy in this smaller house, easier to keep clean and is always warm.
Be ruthless getting rid of stuff though, you’ll miss the extra space but you’ll soo much happier.

I would be excited OP, this is my plan too. We rent and I'm hoping to go from a 3 bed to a 2 bed somehow a bit cheaper. Cheaper rent, Council tax will be less, heating less, smaller garden and half the size to clean. I reckon I will save about £800 a month.
