Nanny wearing my slippers when I'm not there

This is a bit of a weird one - so I popped home today unexpectedly while the nanny was in my house with the kids. Everything seemed fine, but then when she was talking to me I looked down and saw that she was wearing my slippers. It made me feel sick. They're not the cleanest or newest of slippers, but I didn't know what to say. I don't know if she's been doing this the whole time or what but I feel like binning the slippers and hiding my slippers in future. I also feel like letting her go over it. It just makes me wonder what else she might do when I'm not there. She's from Brazil. Is this normal in Brazil to just wear someone else's slippers? Am I being weird to have a total icky feeling about this?

Omg I had a Brazilian cleaner who did things like this. Extremely over familiar. She would do things like this too! When i spoke to her she was really offended.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/11/2025 17:42

To me it was really OTT to say this made you feel sick!

BellyPork · 26/11/2025 17:43

When I'm a guest at a no shoes house I look for a pair of guest slippers to put on. If there are none, I request a pair. I must be rank.

It could possibly be normal in Brazil for people to be provided with slippers if they have to take their shoes off. Do you make her take her shoes off? I honestly dont see this is worth sacking the Nanny over. But telling her you'd prefer she didn't wear them and offer her a pair to wear at your house is totally fine

I don't know about Brazil but I've heard it is normal to provide slippers for visitors in some countries.

@SilverDoublet is Unreasonable to 'feel sick' over such a trivial thing. Talk to her and ask her to bring her own in future if it bothers you.

BoyFTM645 · 26/11/2025 17:45

She thought they were house slippers for guests. We have those. I have a bunch of slippers by the front door for guests to use.

Just buy new slippers.

I don’t understand why OP felt she couldn’t just ask WTF cleaner was doing wearing her slippers. Is it embarrassing to mention these things in public? Grin

Sorry ignore this post - I read the whole thing thinking it was a cleaner not a nanny. Been one of those days.

Typical MN that there's a pile-on accusing the OP of being racist. Would no one else be grossed out at the thought of someone else wearing their slippers? Feet aren't exactly the cleanest things and slippers are often worn with bare feet. Things like veruccas and athlete's foot are common and contagious, plus feet sweat a lot and can smell. I would hate anyone wearing my slippers apart from a close family member.

Edited

I wouldn't care but I do usually wear slippers with socks. In the summer I just have inside sliders or flip flops and of someone wore them barefoot, I would give them a wipe with an antiseptic wipe when they'd left.

Even if I was totally grossed out, I would not think it's a stackable offence for someone who takes care of my kids and has built a bond with them. That's just the height of ridiculous selfishness.

fruitfly3 · 26/11/2025 17:59

My lovely Brazilian cleaners take their outdoors off and put indoors on when they come 🤷‍♀️. Maybe she forgot her indoors. Bin the slippers, buy new and her a pair for Christmas

TiggyTomCat · 26/11/2025 18:03

Bit like our Brazilian cleaner caught taking a dump in our en suite when there are other loos around the house.....it felt like a violation.

CustardySergeant · 26/11/2025 18:06

Why should the OP buy the nanny some slippers? If the nanny wants to wear slippers there's nothing to stop her buying herself some is there?

See this is the over familiar issues I had with our Brazilian cleaner. She did things like this or would just ask a very personal question as if she was asking about the weather.
I also had kitchen gloves and I bought her a pair in a different color. She would use mine all the time 😡
Dh bought the kids some treats and she helped herself because she thought he bought a lot and one or two wouldn’t make a difference. She was just too overly familiar and no boundaries

Susiy · 26/11/2025 18:09

Buy her a pair of slippers for Xmas to use in your home.
Also buy yourself a new pair as you can catch verruca or foot fungi from sharing footwear.

PinkStingray · 26/11/2025 18:09

Please stop the cultural comments.
I am from Brazil, everyone has their own flip-flops.
Using other people's shoes without permission is just bad manners.

If the op wants the nanny to remove her shoes to do her job, she needs to provide the nanny with slippers. It's a tool required for the job.

No, I've never asked her to take her shoes off in the house, we have hard floors downstairs so there's not too much to get dirty that can't be mopped. So that's partly why I found it so strange.

I would hate it. Id buy her slippers to use at yours and keep your slippers on your bedroom going forward

WintersintheWorld · 26/11/2025 15:53

I mean it is a bit weird for her to be wearing your slippers but it is also weird for that fact to make you feel sick.

I usually wear my slippers in the mornings, in bare feet before I have socks on. So I don't think it's very hygienic for someone else to be wearing them. And I certainly assumed I was the only one wearing them.

This is peak mumsnet: the gold-plated en-suite that nobody must ever shit in: certainly not DH, and only the lady of the house would do so in the most dire emergency.

As for all this “Brazilians are over-familiar and have no boundaries”: we could turn that around, and say “Brits are too stuffy and up tight”. I think Hyacinth Bucket lives on. RIP Patricia.

I’d buy a new pair and gift her some lovely new ones too. Her feet must be cold in your house.

We actually have underfloor heating, so don't think it's that she's cold 😂

Then that's weird. She should just wear her shoes if she's cold or wants something on her feet.

It must be a cultural thing. We had an excellent Romanian cleaner who, for some reason always cleaned wearing kitten heels.

I can't imagine having a fit about such a non-event, nevermind considering sacking someone over it.

This is a woman you trust to take care of your actual children, the most important people in your life, and you're bothered about her wearing your slippers?

Elektra1 · 26/11/2025 18:23

Just get yourself a new pair and leave the old ones for her to wear? Nice reason to get a lovely new pair of slippers.

Do you have hard floors upstairs too? Or separate slippers for upstairs and downstairs? Or you're just not that fussed about bringing the outdoors in?

Just wondering how it works if you don't take shoes off at the door!
