To wonder what’s going on with Stacey Solomon

I like her (as much as you can like someone you don’t really know) although I’m less keen on how much she exposes her kids to the public eye. But that aside I enjoy her shows - both SYLO and the documentary.

But there seems to be a bit of a backlash lately - the Mail has a story (behind their paid for bit) about how she and Joe aren’t all they seem (surely not!) and I’ve read a few things about her fallout with Mrs Hinch and her Amazon affiliate programme.

Why is everyone suddenly turning against her? Is it just that we don’t generally like seeing people do well or is there more to it? I think there are worse people to dislike.

@GehenSieweiterany particular examples? Have you followed her on Instagram?
All she sold me is accepting my body post pregnancies and being ok with hairy armpits occasionally…

Edited

I used to follow her, but stopped. Perpetuating the myth that she's 'just like us' bothered me, as did using her kids a props. I'm also not interested in constantly being recommended tat to buy. While I appreciate that her voice is just a voice, her and her sister do sound a tad droney to me.

To be fair, I remember when Stacey was on the X Factor and she was a decent singer. I think some people forget how Stacey became famous.

She had a pleasant enough voice but so do some of my friends. She was essentially a karaoke singer, not a real musician in any sense. I still wouldn’t call her a tall poppy. The public liked her single mum back story and her personality and that’s how her fame has happened.

You said she’s conning people. That’s a serious accusation.

Cheryl punched someone.
Cheryl is also a very weak singer, yet somehow judges other people's singing ability.

And yet when the media decided that she was popular none of these obstacles stood in her way. She was very popular and very successful for a while (and this was after she punched someone).

And then, when they'd had enough, they tore her down.

That's why she's the perfect example of the power of the media.

Stacey put herself out there, which is why she achieved the fame she did. I do acknowledge that there was an element of luck as Stacey came third back in X Factor's heyday (when thousands auditioned). I doubt she would have achieved the same level of recognition if she was a contestant years later.

Lots influencers essentially con their followers.
Not here for a bun fight with you, tschüss.

'Put herself out there'? Whaf do you actually mean by that?

Cycleaway · 25/11/2025 08:19

She seems nice enough, although Personally I find that parasocial style of influencing that she leans into with her fans and followers really disingenuous and manipulative.

But I think the Mail etc tearing her down is nothing to do with any of that!

In front of millions of people, Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole etc, she was only 17 with a kid at the time so that takes a lot of guts.

Thousands of people have done that.

She was 19. I think she was 17 when she had her baby. 19 isn’t really that young for the X factor. The one direction boys were about 16 when they auditioned.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 25/11/2025 08:29

I never bought the ditzy, innocent facade and she did rather show another side to herself by bitching about how unfair it was that she didn't win a BAFTA because her show really deserved it as they all work so hard (basically implying that the other show didn't). I don't have a problem with her being upset over losing or moaning privately over it, but why put it up on SM to show yourself as a poor loser.

I thought that might have been a one off but then she was interviewed on the radio just before the NTAs moaning because they'd put two of her shows in the same category thus doing her out of the chance of two awards. The entitlement was off the scale and I think that's what the media is taking issue with.

When did they tear her down? As I said earlier, the public got tired of all the 'nation's sweetheart' nonsense, but I don't recall the media ever giving her an especially hard time. Even when she had a baby with a man ten years younger, whom she had met when he was 14. If some celebrities had done that, they'd have been dragged from here to the hereafter. The worst the media did to Cheryl was take less notice of her as her popularity waned. She got exceptionally lucky: I think if she'd been discovered even a few years later she would not have been anywhere near as successful as she became.

Yeah there’s no way she’d even make it through the first rounds these days. Zero singing ability and only got through because Pete Waterman thought she was “stunning” and had “amazing skin” (yuk!). She also came across as a not very nice person with racially abusing and punching the toilet attendant and forming her little clique with Nicola and Kimberley and pushing the other two in the group out. I also remember her bitching about Lily Allen and calling her “a chick with a dick” which I’m not even sure what it means but doesn’t sound nice and Lily was upset by it.
Then more terrible singing and X factor judging followed and eventually people started to question why we were being told that this person was amazing and super talented when she really wasn’t.

newbluesofa · 25/11/2025 08:48

I don't know why everyone got so cross about the affiliate thing on MN the other day. Honestly I think a lot of those people on the thread were just quite out of touch, affiliate marketing is very simple and has been going on for a long time.

I don't know about the mail, I don't read it because it's nasty and hateful and I don't know why any decent person would read it. I'm not surprised they're running nasty stories about a popular person that people like, sounds like exactly the kind of thing they do

I can't really be bothered to trawl through it all to spoon feed it to you, but if you can it's very interesting reading. All of the media coverage will still be out there.

You've got a lot of faith in 'the public' that you think we all decide we like someone and then we all get bored with someone with no input from the media. It's worth reading around the power of the media more generally. It's very interesting.

FantaOranged · 25/11/2025 08:57

Does anyone know if they are married legally or was it just a religious ceremony?

Starlight1984 · 25/11/2025 09:05

I don't mind her and like watching her programmes but I have recently stopped following her on Instagram as every single post is an advert!!! It's been worse since she started with the Amazon affiliate programme as it's just relentless advertising of shite, cheapy made products.

Well I was there as well and you are wrong. She was not attacked by media. You 'can't be bothered' to provide examples because they aren't there!
I don't disagree about the power of the media, but I actually remember noticing at the time that the backlash against Cheryl never came.

This 100%. The media kept right on fawing, but the public had had enough.

AliceMaforethought · 25/11/2025 07:45

I don't think it was the media who were nasty to Cheryl. If anything, they fawned over her. It was the public who got tired of her. I think it was her embarrasingly awful duet with Gary Barlow at the Jubilee in 2012 that really marked her cards. It was then that is was made obvious beyond any doubt that she had zero vocal talent.

Thanks AliceMaforethought for the reminder of the Gary Barlow/Cheryl Cole performance on the Jubilee Concert, just had to go and re-watch on YouTube 🤣 🤣

JoeTheDrummer · 25/11/2025 09:59

I enjoy SYLO, and she comes across well on it, but I hate how she monetises her children, particularly the little ones who are too young to consent to their childhood being played out online. It’s just so greedy and irresponsible.

I used to really like her but I must admit, she’s grating a bit on me now. I’m fed up with the constant ads on Instagram and her annoying laugh when whatever she’s saying or doing isn’t funny. Can’t stand Joe Swash either.
Oh and I don’t like the way she’s roped her sister into the whole thing and she’s getting as bad as Stacey.
FFS, literally as I am writing this, Stacey has just been on an advert plugging her jewellery range 😬
