To think cats shouldn’t be allowed out without owners

The other thread about cats vs dogs has made me realise I’m not alone in my feelings about cats being allowed to roam freely, kill wildlife, and crap all over the place.

Why is it one rule for dogs and another for cats? It’s doesn’t make any sense really, when you think about it.

Shouldn’t the same rules apply: cats can be walked on leads and owners must pick up after them or risk fines etc?

The difference is that birds are a natural part of a balanced food chain and a healthy ecosystem. Your pet cat isn’t.

I don't think the millions of parakeets in our garden are a natural part of a balanced food chain...

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 25/11/2025 17:15

I keep asking my cats to grab one of these - useless buggers never do. 🤣

I checked with my cats and they both replied, in synch, "fuck you I won't do what you tell me".

lol

I agree non wild animals, with owners should be kept on the owners property,if i had a pet pig with a bad recall wouldnt take it for a poo to the neighbours garden. I find it so frustrating when neighbours cats pee outside our property, can smell the male cat pee,or poo inside the childrens sandbox (the sand costs more to replace than the moggy to his owner), and then the risk of diseases from cat poo, having to clean up after someone elses pet etc. If someone keeping cats indoors is cruel needs to move to a property where there are no neighbours where their pet wont be nuisance to them or not take a pet at all.

jwpetal · 25/11/2025 17:37

I grew up in a place that cats were indoor cats due to dangers from other animals. My cats were fine with it. They were also more loving and attached. My first cat I let roam and was not friendly. basically came in to eat and sleep. My dog would stay outside all day with her dog friends. we have to pull her home. I had a neighbour that walk his cats on the lead. They were perfectly happy and adjusted.

Pass the popcorn.

Just suppose that the government did decide to kill everybody’s pet cats during the insanity of 2020. (And yes, this might have been a reality: it was suggested that cats carried the virus, and the government did consider killing everybody’s cats. That insane year, anything was possible. It was highly downplayed in the media, though.)

I bet some people on this thread would have gladly joined the cat killing army. (As for my cats, they would have had to have killed me first!)

Ivelostmyglasses · 25/11/2025 17:56

All that will happen now is more of them will sh*t in your garden.

Xmasdemon · 25/11/2025 18:14

Well it's been a few years since cats were introduced... is the food network down yet ?

Owning a cat is basically an anti social activity. They shit in other people's gardens but don't shit in your own garden. Depositing shit regularly in other people's property would be considered highly anti social in any other circumstances.

This is surely of the perks of having a cat.

Silverwinged · 25/11/2025 18:28

My cat is an indoor cat. I tried to teach her to wear a harness, but she is not having it. I think that unless you get them used to a harness when young, many won't learn when they are older. There are already plenty of bad dog owners out there, who did not raise their dogs properly (to i.e. not jump on people), I can imagine that many cat owners do even less to train their animals.

My point is, how are you going to enforce this?

24kPalamino · 25/11/2025 18:41

My garden is now covered with plastic spikes, cost a bit, but it’s sort of hidden by grass or mulch. Keeps the cats out though and if they jump in the garden, they quickly jump back out again.

Previously my cat loving neighbour told me ‘if my cat comes in your garden, just give her a spray with some water’. However, when I did exactly that and put the hose on it, she went nuts. I can only assume she didn’t really want me to soak her cat mid shit. It was good fun though.

She recently had the gall to complain to ME that the spikes are cruel and that HER cat was shitting on their astroturf where the kids play set is now. As if I, having no children (as DS is 20 and away at uni) should prioritise her environment over my own, Poor kids, can’t even use their own slide anymore.

I’m sure there are plenty of good cat owners, but my goodness, some are entitled fucks.

But no, yanbu op. Cats roaming and crapping everywhere is really antisocial and unpleasant for non cat owners.

TappyGilmore · 25/11/2025 18:55

Yes cats kill wildlife. I live in a townhouse complex which had a rodent problem before my cat moved in. Now it doesn’t. She’s great!

Andromed1 · 25/11/2025 19:32

Dogs can be very dangerous roaming wild, to each other and to humans. Cats are not.

Ellsternell · 25/11/2025 19:36

There’s a reason that most reputable shelters won’t rehome cats as indoor cats only (without good reason).

What’s your take on foxes and badgers shitting in your garden @DoBeDoBeDooo with whom does one take up grievance?

Isn't the whole point that those are wild animals without owners? Cats are not.

I’ve spoken to Chairman Meow who is self appointed lord of the 3 moggies who live here.
He had a think, whilst he was on his throne, aka littler tray. He then meowed ‘noted’ as he rammed his fat furry bum through the cat flap. Did my best.

OP - you exist on this earth as one of the most dangerous and destructive of all species. Your individual existence has and will cause so much destruction to insect life, wildlife and the environment. Your waste gets pumped into rivers. Countless creatures suffer unimaginable cruelty so you can eat, shop, get well, live. Your child will be a similar stain on this planet.

Can you tell me why you personally should be able to roam free?

Spot on.

I don't really care about that.

I care about worm welfare. More birds means the worms are under threat, you absolute monster. How can you sleep at night knowing that, if there are less cats, there are more birds and thousands of worms, including baby worms, will be wiped out?

Won't someone please think of the baby worms.

freakingscared · 25/11/2025 22:04

Talk about being ridiculous! You are comparing apples and oranges , cats are felines they roam .
Not to mention they bring benefits too , countries where cat numbers decline saw huge increases in mice and rats .

OonaStubbs · 25/11/2025 22:09

Why can't we just ban all pets? Cats, dogs, birds, all of them. And ban mice and rats too. That will keep everyone happy.

TheSwarm · 25/11/2025 15:08

Our insect and worm population is being decimated by birds. Without cats who knows how many more insects would suffer. Have you thought of that?

Our UK native wildlife is NOT being decimated by cats. Its already been wiped out by peasants & landowners.
“For over 300 years parish authorities were required by law to make payments for the killing of most wild birds and animals”: read here; www.hantsfieldclub.org.uk/publications/hampshirestudies/digital/2000s/vol60/Anderson.pdf

Furthermore we continue to remove wildlife by depriving them of natural territories, covering the landscape in buildings & odd farming methods like pheasant shooting:
