Dogs are much more loved by society than cats

I was just watching For Dogs Sake with Pete Wicks and Dogs Trust and realised there isn’t anything like this for cats. This is the second season and there’s also been For the Love of Dogs, plus that channel 4 programme The Doghouse and probably loads more that I haven’t seen.

I never see anything like this for cats… I think Jo Brand did one years ago but other than that, where are all of the heartwarming shows about cats needing homes?

I also notice that when I tell people I have 2 cats, a lot of them say “ugh I hate cats” yet when I say I have a dog no one ever tells me they hate dogs. I feel like there’s this almost over the top love of dogs sometimes where people treat them like babies, whereas cats seem to be hated on a lot or seen as the inferior pet. (In general of course! I know there’s many many cat lovers out there)

As a cat lover I say, it's their loss. When you think about it, cats are quite aloof and less needy than dogs. They live life far more on their terms than most dogs do. I think the same can often be said about cat lovers. Maybe that influences things?

Agix · 24/11/2025 14:25

Harder to control cats than it is dogs (most of the time) so a lot more people dislike them, and those that dislike them tend to REALLY dislike them. Dogs will give you unconditional adoration and are often eager to please, cats do whatever they damn well please whether they adore you or not and are not at all eager to please you. Humans don't like that.

I love cats and see it as a bit of a red flag if someone doesn't like them (unless they're allergic or have past bad experience which has caused a fear, I have sympathy for that), but not much we can do about it.

bugalugs45 · 24/11/2025 14:25

You are correct .
I have dog currently , but have had cat in the past .
I always say I have to put a lot more in to having a dog , walking etc , but I get a lot more out .
Im deffo a dog person , but don’t hate cats at all

Oreosareawful · 24/11/2025 14:28

My cat from hell was a tv show with Jackson Galaxy. But the title doesn't really do cats much justice!
I adore cats and have just accepted house cat number five into our family. But I'm now deemed the crazy cat lady and all my colleages prefer dogs.

MiddleChildX · 24/11/2025 14:43

If it helps balance things out…
ugh, I don’t like dogs. 😉

MiddleChildX · 24/11/2025 14:45

Although, I don’t like cats either 😁

Comedycook · 24/11/2025 14:46

I don't really like dogs but if someone tells me they have one ..I go aww and pretend to give a shit. I reckon lots of people are the same

WallaceinAnderland · 24/11/2025 14:46

It's true. But the cats don't give a fuck.

Dogs are needy and clingy.

Fruitfiddler · 24/11/2025 14:47

On people not liking cats, it's quite possibly as simple as many people don't like cats because they don't like picking up their neighbours cat shit from their back garden where their kids play, or dealing with the remains of dead birds after the neighbours cat has killed it on their lawn.

By and large, your neighbours dogs aren't shitting in your back garden or leaving the remains of dead birds on your patio.

Those are the reasons I don't like cats anyway (despite currently having one).

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 24/11/2025 14:49

A show about dogs needing homes can be filled with shots of the dogs joyfully bounding over to potential owners, wagging their tails and playing. A cat would just sit there and maybe look at you like it thinks your shoes are ugly. It's not great TV.

Hahahahahaha!! Yes that’s such a good point actually. That’s made me laugh 😂

A lot of people treat dogs like they're their children and get really precious and offended if you don't show interest and ooohh and ahhh over them.

ReleaseTheEpsteinFiles · 24/11/2025 14:52

I can't stand dogs. Once you are open about this, many people 'admit' they don't like dogs either - it's like you're not allowed to say it because you're a horrible person if you don't like dogs, which is of course not a correlation.

I think many people don't like dogs, but those that do take it upon themselves to brainwash society into liking dogs and making us think that not liking dogs is a character flaw.

All the dog-promoting crap is an agenda to that purpose. Cats don't need this propaganda at all.

That's why we have so many dog-promoting, brain-washing cartoons, like Paw Patrol and 101 Dalmations and Scooby Do, and Droopy and Snoopy and Bluey.

NuffSaidSam · 24/11/2025 14:52

I love dogs and really don't care for cats, so it's true in my case.

I think as pp said, dogs are better TV stars than cats.

MysteryNameChange · 24/11/2025 14:53

We have a much higher internet ranking.

OonaStubbs · 24/11/2025 14:53

Cats are far better than dogs. You never (or rarely) here about cats savaging people and I'm not aware of anyone being killed by a domestic cat in this country. Cats are quiet and keep to themselves, they don't cause misery to people with incessant barking.

It would never occur to me to hate an animal because it goes to the toilet. The cats don’t know that you don’t want it to go there. They have no concept of “this is someone’s garden” they aren’t doing it to spite you, they are just looking for somewhere to toilet and have no idea that they’re doing anything wrong. Our neighbours feed pigeons and there’s soooo many of them, they hang around on the roof and there’s always bird poo on my back step and garden but I silently curse my neighbour, I don’t HATE every bird for simply having a shit

Not in my garden, no, but they are busy shitting on the pavements and in playparks, Dog shit is a major problem, far more than cat poo.

Kippykangarooo · 24/11/2025 14:54

I dislike cats shitting in my garden.

Dragonscaledaisy · 24/11/2025 14:54

I hate cats - quite happy to admit it.

Sartre · 24/11/2025 14:55

It’s probably because cats murder so many birds and we’re a nation of bird lovers too. They’re also super independent and I think people love dogs because they depend on you and actually want you around. Cats only want you if they can extract something from you like food or affection. They’re literally narcissists.

NuffSaidSam · 24/11/2025 14:55

The shit, from both cats and dogs, is always a failure on the part of the owner not the animal.

Perhaps what we really hate is other people?

Not sure you can police where your cat shits in the same way though unless you have a house cat which, by the way, I am all for because they murder so many birds.

Upthenorth · 24/11/2025 14:57

I am not a dog fan but I think it’s the owners more than the dogs.

If they didn’t let them off the lead when not in control and picked up their poo then I would probably like them more….

Never had a cat pooing in my garden so can’t comment on that but can appreciate it would be awful.

Some humans don't like that, I agree. Dog lovers can't get over the fact that cats expect you to be the one giving them the unconditional adoration.

Other humans understand that cats are not like dogs, and they will not give you unconditional adoration. It is entirely the other way round. You have to earn the respect of the cat, and the cat will decide (on a daily basis) whether to display affection or grace you with its presence on your knee. It will purr if you are lucky.
