Dogs are much more loved by society than cats

I was just watching For Dogs Sake with Pete Wicks and Dogs Trust and realised there isn’t anything like this for cats. This is the second season and there’s also been For the Love of Dogs, plus that channel 4 programme The Doghouse and probably loads more that I haven’t seen.

I never see anything like this for cats… I think Jo Brand did one years ago but other than that, where are all of the heartwarming shows about cats needing homes?

I also notice that when I tell people I have 2 cats, a lot of them say “ugh I hate cats” yet when I say I have a dog no one ever tells me they hate dogs. I feel like there’s this almost over the top love of dogs sometimes where people treat them like babies, whereas cats seem to be hated on a lot or seen as the inferior pet. (In general of course! I know there’s many many cat lovers out there)

Not in my garden, no, but they are busy shitting on the pavements and in playparks, Dog shit is a major problem, far more than cat poo.

Not where I live. There are far more cats than dogs around here. Everyone clears up after their dogs. Cats just shit wherever they like. No one clears up cat shit.

Thewindowdressing · 24/11/2025 14:58

I had both and imho it's because dogs are generally bit more fun emotional than cats.
Our dogs never judged me. Our cats on the other hand... 😂

Not sure you can police where your cat shits in the same way though unless you have a house cat which, by the way, I am all for because they murder so many birds.

Well, yes, exactly that. If you can't police it then you need to keep it indoors.

"I'm sorry I can't police where my dog shits when I let it out unsupervised" isn't good enough and it's not good enough from cat owners either.

I think it's no surprise most people with a shred of decency and neighbourliness would love more the animal that didn't shit in other peoples gardens, kill wildlife and spread disease over the one that does.

A show about dogs needing homes can be filled with shots of the dogs joyfully bounding over to potential owners, wagging their tails and playing. A cat would just sit there and maybe look at you like it thinks your shoes are ugly. It's not great TV.

A clever production team could work around that, and, considering all the nonsense that does get turned into TV (pottery! knitting!), I'm a bit surprised it hasn't happened. The cats will have their day, I'm sure. When someone gets round to it. @Avocad1sh would you watch it?

Yes I would love to watch it. I watched the Jo Brand one. It’s not just about rehoming though, it’s often sick or injured/mistreated cats that are treated and then rehomed etc so it’s not just an hour of filming a cat judging you from their cage lol

I like to watch them because I do a lot of work with both cat and dog charities, fostering difficult cases and I used to work for dogs trust and know what goes on etc so I enjoy watching the programmes. I love seeing the animal turn around and have a happy ending

Ponders decency and neighbourlines as I listen to next door's cunty cockerpoos bark non-stop.

I saw a meme that said people hate cats for the same reason men hate women - they have boundaries and want you to respect them.

David Baddiel Catman is coming up soon on C4. Should be a good watch OP

I'd rather step in dog shit on the pavement than my neighbours cat shitting repeatedly in my garden where my young children play.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 24/11/2025 15:06

I really don't like dogs, but I wouldn't tell you that. I wouldn't go on a rant about all the dog shit on pavements and hanging from trees.

I'd say 'aww, he's so cute!' or something.

Because you obviously love him, and I'm not going to be a dick about it, just like I wouldn't tell you your kid is annoying or your sofa is ugly! 😂

For some reason people seem more likely to go on at person who loves their cat about how much they hate cats. I've no idea why that is. It just makes me think they're an arsehole - mostly because it's bloody rude, not because they don't like cats!

Edit: typo...

And can spread disease, shit in other people’s gardens and can and do kill wildlife and farm animals.

Personally I adore both and I don’t really understand or trust people who dislike cats or dogs.

Comedycook · 24/11/2025 15:03

People have killed people. So I think by this measure we're looking at cats being at the top of the tree, followed by dogs and then humans right down the bottom.

KimberleyClark · 24/11/2025 15:08

I like dogs and cats with a slight preference for dogs. I think people don’t like cats because they kill so many birds. Between 40 and 70 million per year.

WallaceinAnderland · 24/11/2025 15:08

We have to pretend to like dogs because people treat them like their children and would be offended if we were more honest. Thus, we are a nation of dog haters lovers. It's just British politeness.

People want to take their dogs everywhere, even bring them into your house. Imagine if people came to stay and said, 'We need to bring the cat'

FancyLimePoet · 24/11/2025 15:09

I’m not sure cats crave or need the kind love and companionship a dog does. Dog’s are often taken on trips so they really become part of the family. Never seen a cat in a restaurant or at the beach on a sunny day! I think the connection is deeper. I don’t dislike cats. I like all creatures, but I love dogs (and horses).

If I was regularly shitting in a mans garden I think he'd have every right to hate me tbh.

I may actually have visitors if this was a stipulation. Please, bring all the cats.

Yes I do hate that, I don’t hate the cats themselves but I do hate that this happens. My cats have a cat proofed garden so that they can’t get out so I don’t need to worry. But it does upset me when I think about this

But the dogs don't hang their own shit from the trees...it makes sense to really dislike irresponsible dog owners for this reason. It's a strange reason to not like the dogs themselves.

But no one wants your smelly dog in a restaurant, we just have to put up with it. Beaches are fine but anywhere food is served or even shops, they do not need to be there.

SeaAndStars · 24/11/2025 15:12

I wouldn't have another cat because I've created a wildlife garden and grow my own food. They're a menace to both.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 24/11/2025 15:13

On people not liking cats, it's quite possibly as simple as many people don't like cats because they don't like picking up their neighbours cat shit from their back garden where their kids play, or dealing with the remains of dead birds after the neighbours cat has killed it on their lawn.

By and large, your neighbours dogs aren't shitting in your back garden or leaving the remains of dead birds on your patio.

Those are the reasons I don't like cats anyway (despite currently having one).

On the other hand... other people's cats don't jump up at you when you are out for a walk, leaving muddy pawprints all over your front. They don't shove their nose into your groin. They don't hump your leg. Their owners don't tend to have cats as a conversation topic to the exclusion of all else. They don't need taking for a walk. They don't bark or howl for hours on end and annoy the shit out of their neighbours. They don't incessantly demand constant attention from you. They don't harry sheep. They don't roll in fox shit.
And above all: they don't savage children (and sometimes adults) to death.

Comedycook · 24/11/2025 15:14

A colleague at work was telling me all about her dog the other day...I asked loads of questions and ooohed and ahhed when she told me what sort of things it did...and she showed me a photo and I told her how sweet it was....I lied.
